BYD confirms Australian recall of Shark 6 ute

BYD Australia has instigated a recall of 32,009 Shark 6 utes in Australia after identifying a spare-wheel-related fault that could lead to detachment while the vehicle is in use. Torquecafe reported that the recall covers all three variants of the model sold here, with BYD saying incorrect spare-wheel installation, incorrect tray positioning or insufficient fastening torque may cause abnormal wear of the spare-wheel support cable. ²

Newswire’s reporting on 17 September said the recall applies to Shark 6 vehicles made from August 2024 to June 2026, and identified the affected build tally as 28,543 Premium, 2,100 Performance and 1,366 Dynamic Cab Chassis examples. The same report said BYD is recalling the vehicles because the spare wheel could detach and that owners should remove the spare wheel until the vehicle can be repaired. ³⁵

Fault description and safety response

BYD’s described failure mode is that continued movement and friction during normal operation may cause the spare-wheel support cable to fail after abnormal wear develops. The company said the resulting spare-wheel detachment may create a hazard to other road users and potentially cause serious injury or death. ²³

Torquecafe said impacted Shark 6s will be fitted with an updated spare wheel lifter assembly as part of the recall, while Karmactive reported BYD will replace the spare-wheel lifter assembly free of charge at an authorised dealer. Both reports said BYD has urged owners to remove the spare wheel while waiting for the repair. ²⁴

Affected variants and owner checks

The recall includes all three local variants: Premium, Performance and Dynamic cab-chassis. Torquecafe said owners can confirm whether a vehicle is affected by entering the ute’s 17-character VIN into BYD’s Vehicle Recall Information tool, while Karmactive likewise said owners can check the VIN and arrange the free repair with a dealer. ²⁴

Carscoops also reported that the recall applies to all Shark 6s sold in Australia and said BYD was contacting owners by email and through the BYD app. The publication said the repair should take up to 30 minutes, although it noted that workshop scheduling may mean some owners need to leave the vehicle with the dealer longer. ¹

Newswire said the Shark 6 arrived in Australia in October 2024 and sold almost 5,000 units in the first three months of 2025 before demand softened after the fringe benefits tax exemption for plug-in hybrids ended.
