Hyundai Ioniq 9 Calligraphy: Australian assessment

The evidence supports the Hyundai Ioniq 9 Calligraphy as a substantial Australian-market electric flagship rather than a lightly equipped or niche EV. Hyundai’s local material and CarExpert’s specifications describe a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive large SUV with a 110.3kWh battery, 314kW and 700Nm, while CarExpert’s price-and-specs coverage and the Chasing Cars launch report both state a 600km WLTP claim and a 5.2-second claimed 0-100km/h time. That establishes the shape of the vehicle clearly enough: this is Hyundai’s three-row battery-electric family model for buyers who want space, long-range intent and high equipment content, not a stripped-back compliance offering. ⁵⁶⁷³⁴

Australian specification and equipment

Specification is consistent across the Australian pages, with the Calligraphy offered in 6-seat or 7-seat form and Hyundai describing it as the brand’s first three-row electric SUV. CarExpert lists the Australian release date as 2 July 2025, and its variant page gives dimensions of 5,060mm in length, 1,980mm in width, 1,790mm in height and a 3,130mm wheelbase, along with 174mm ground clearance and 2,500kg braked towing capacity. Hyundai’s dealer page reinforces the packaging story with a 314kW dual-electric-motor AWD powertrain, 800V architecture, heat pump, battery conditioning and the claim that the 3,130mm wheelbase is the longest of any Hyundai passenger vehicle. Standard equipment called out by Hyundai and CarExpert includes 21-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic curved dual-12.3-inch display setup, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, OTA updates, Bose 14-speaker audio, head-up display, Digital Key 2, remote parking assistance and a panoramic sunroof. ⁵⁶³⁴

Practicality and cabin space

Practicality is one of the Ioniq 9’s strongest supported themes. Hyundai says the cabin can seat up to seven, while the dealer pages describe a six-seat version with captain’s chairs, a sliding centre console and relaxation features. Hyundai also states there is 338L of cargo capacity with all three rows in use, 2,419L with the second and third rows folded, and 52L of front storage; Henryman’s independent Australian evaluation of a seven-seat Calligraphy measured the boot at 388L with the third row upright and 908L with it folded, while also describing the cabin as genuinely family friendly with useful boot organisation and good second-row space. Those figures are not interchangeable: the Hyundai and dealer material are catalogue claims, while Henryman’s figures come from a specific test car and are best read as outlet-specific observations rather than a correction to Hyundai’s published data. ³⁴¹⁵

Road-test findings and their limits

Henryman’s March 2026 review of a seven-seat Calligraphy, based on a seven-day independent evaluation provided by Hyundai Australia, was broadly favourable. The outlet praised exceptional ride comfort, long range, ultra-fast charging, non-overwhelming technology, family-friendly practicality and a stunning interior. It also identified model- and market-specific drawbacks: intrusive lane-keep assist, one-pedal driving defaulting off, missing interior V2L for Australia, and some carryover parts from other Hyundai models. Henryman further reported that the test vehicle returned 21.7kWh/100km on mixed urban and highway driving, which translated to roughly 488km of real-world range, below the 600km WLTP claim. ¹

Henryman also noted that the adaptive cruise and lane centring worked smoothly even in heavy rain, the 360-degree camera was clear, blind-spot view cameras were useful and the digital rear-view mirror was effective. Those findings strengthen the review signal around comfort and driver assistance, but they remain outlet-specific observations from a single Australian test car and should not be read as universal performance guarantees for every Ioniq 9 or every road condition. ¹

Pricing and ownership conditions

Price evidence needs to be kept on separate bases. CarExpert’s price-and-specs article says the Australian Calligraphy starts at $119,750 before on-road costs, and Chasing Cars repeats that figure as the launch price. By contrast, CarExpert’s model page shows Sydney-based driveaway estimates of $128,021 to $130,121, while the CarExpert variant page lists a driveaway figure of $128,107. Hyundai’s dealer pages also note that a six-seat configuration costs an extra $2,000 and that metallic or pearl paints attract a $750 premium, with matte paint priced at $1,000. Hyundai’s warranty page says passenger vehicles first registered from 1 June 2025 can receive up to seven years unlimited kilometres if all scheduled servicing is completed with Hyundai, otherwise the five-year standard warranty applies; it also sets out separate battery warranty coverage and roadside-support terms, which are material to the ownership picture. ⁵²⁶³⁴
