BYD expects the discount to end

BYD Australia executives expect the Atto 1 Essential’s regular list price to return after the electric hatchback’s temporary $19,990 drive-away offer. Introduced nationwide in September, the deal made the Essential one of Australia’s cheapest new cars when on-road costs are included. The executives’ comments, reported by CarExpert, indicate that BYD does not intend to make the promotional drive-away price permanent. ¹²

BYD Australia chief product officer Sajid Hasan told CarExpert the offer was short-term and said the original price point would return at the start of January. He said BYD would then assess other retail offers. Asked whether the Essential’s usual $23,990 price before on-road costs would be reinstated, chief operating officer Stephen Collins indicated that he thought it would. Those comments leave open the possibility of a different incentive later; they are not a guarantee of the price buyers will pay in January. ¹

Offer dates and price conditions

The $19,990 Essential offer is advertised to end on 15 December 2026. Zecar reports that vehicles ordered under it must be delivered by 31 December and that it cannot be combined with BYD’s separate five per cent Atto 1 novated-lease discount. The reported delivery condition is distinct from the advertised end date for the offer. ¹⁷

The Essential’s usual $23,990 list price excludes on-road costs, whereas the promotional $19,990 includes them. CarExpert calculated a previous drive-away price of $26,993 using a Sydney postcode. In its 17 September report, GoAuto put regular drive-away prices at $25,762 to $27,060 depending on the state or territory of registration, equivalent on its figures to savings of $5772 to $7070 under the nationwide offer. These are location-dependent estimates, not alternative manufacturer list prices. ³⁵

Early reporting differed on the offer’s duration: GoAuto said on 17 September that it had no confirmed end date, while CarExpert’s initial account identified 15 December as the scheduled deadline. CarExpert’s later report again gave that date and added the executives’ comments about the expected return of regular pricing. ³⁵¹

What the Essential retains

Chasing Cars and GoAuto report no specification change accompanying the Essential discount. The front-wheel-drive hatch retains a 30kWh lithium iron phosphate battery and an electric motor rated at 65kW and 175Nm. Its 220km range is a claimed figure under the WLTP test cycle, not a measured result from Australian driving. ²³

Maximum charging rates are listed at 65kW on DC power and 11kW on AC power. The NRMA’s Open Road reports a claimed 10–80 per cent DC charging time of 30 minutes; that is not an independently measured charging result. ³⁶

Standard equipment includes a 10.1-inch touchscreen, a 7.0-inch digital instrument display, wired and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a reversing camera and rear parking sensors. Adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking and lane-keep assist are also listed. GoAuto reports a five-star ANCAP rating from 2025 testing. Metallic paint remains a $500 option. ³⁵

Premium remains outside the offer

The $19,990 drive-away price applies only to the Essential. The Atto 1 Premium remains $27,990 before on-road costs. GoAuto lists a 43.2kWh battery, a 115kW/220Nm motor, a claimed 310km WLTP range and 85kW maximum DC charging for the Premium. Those figures should not be confused with the discounted Essential’s specifications. ¹³

GoAuto also lists a surround-view camera, wireless phone charging, heated and power-adjustable front seats, LED headlights and steering-wheel reach adjustment among the Premium’s additional equipment. ³

How the drive-away price compares

The Atto 1’s cheapest-car standing depends on drive-away prices rather than list prices, and accounts differ on its closest petrol rival. CarExpert and GoAuto reported an MG 3 Vibe offer of $19,990 drive-away, due to end on 30 September, which would put it level with the BYD. Mashable described the MG price as including a $1000 cashback offer. Zecar instead listed the MG 3 Vibe at $20,990 drive-away and said the BYD undercut it by $1000. The reports do not establish that those MG figures reflect the same offer conditions, so the difference cannot be settled by treating either figure as a like-for-like regular price. ⁵³⁴⁷

The manual Kia Picanto Sport has a lower $19,190 list price before on-road costs. Chasing Cars calculated $22,290 drive-away for that variant in New South Wales, above the BYD’s nationwide promotional price. GoAuto reported 3838 Atto 1 deliveries year-to-date as at its 17 September account, behind the MG 3 and Picanto in the combined micro and light-car segments. That sales figure predates the latest comments from BYD’s executives. ²³
