Speed 'necessary, not sufficient', says Lamborghini

Lamborghini has argued that outright acceleration can no longer define a supercar now that electric vehicles, including family sedans and SUVs, can match the brutal straight-line performance once exclusive to exotic machines. Paolo Racchetti, model line director for the Temerario, told CarExpert in Milan: "Speed is still an important part of performance, but it's clear that it's necessary, not sufficient, for a car to be called a super-sports car." He added that focus on a car's dynamic capabilities is becoming more important, and that the level of pure performance "maybe… will be less relevant in the future". ¹³

The Italian marque's position was reported widely: ua.news, summarising Motor1's reporting of the Milan comments, said Lamborghini linked the shift to electric family sedans and SUVs now accelerating from 0 to 60mph in about three seconds, making acceleration figures that were previously a supercar exclusive far less impressive. Racchetti said a supercar should offer not only acceleration and speed but driving emotion, according to that report. ²⁵

Lamborghini does not intend to abandon electrification, but rather to shape how it is applied. "What a super-sports car must provide is not only acceleration and speed, but also emotion. That's why we went for a hybrid architecture, because at the end of the day you still have the turbocharged internal combustion engine able to rev to 10,000rpm, giving you the strong emotionality that only mechanics can provide," Racchetti told CarExpert. "It's a philosophy that we think is working because it remains really connected to our DNA." ¹³

Temerario: hybrid V8 with three e-motors

The Temerario, described by CarExpert as the 'entry-level' successor to the Huracán, pairs a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged petrol V8 with three electric motors for a combined 677kW. Lamborghini claims 0-100km/h in 2.7 seconds, and the engine revs beyond 10,000rpm — which CarExpert notes is a first for a mass-produced supercar and, in the brand's framing, central to the car's character. Separately, zoomit.ir reported the high-revving twin-turbo V8 replaces the Huracán's naturally aspirated V10 as Lamborghini's engineering route to preserving a distinctive mechanical soundtrack. ¹³⁴

Dynamics are where the hybrid system does more than add straight-line shove. The two front electric motors can vary torque independently between the front wheels, letting the Temerario actively influence yaw and cornering behaviour, according to CarExpert's report. The setup supports 13 drive configurations, including a Drift mode with three levels, and Racchetti said it allows the car to be "a grand tourer, a rear-wheel drive car, an all-wheel drive car — really different kinds of driving dynamics". ¹³

At the core of the car's drivability is Lamborghini's LDVI 2.0 vehicle controller. Racchetti called it "the mastermind" of the systems managing engine, gearbox, motor, damping and braking software, telling CarExpert the electronics deliver performance "in a seamless way" so the car is easy to drive and confidence-inspiring — "but maybe the most important thing is that we can emphasise emotion". ¹³

EV postponed, hybrids across the range

The philosophy also explains Lamborghini's reluctance to launch a fully electric vehicle. Earlier in 2026, CEO Stephan Winkelmann told CarExpert the brand's first EV had been postponed indefinitely, and confirmed the company's fourth model — a 2+2-seat GT car likely based on the Lanzador concept — will adopt plug-in hybrid power like the rest of the lineup. "We are not selling mobility — you don't buy a Lamborghini because you have to go from A to B every day," Winkelmann said at the time. ¹³

ua.news, citing Motor1, reported that development of the electric model is continuing despite the indefinite postponement, and that Motor1's view is Lamborghini does not want its cars reduced to expensive vehicles with impressive acceleration figures. The current range — Revuelto, Temerario and Urus SE — is electrified in one form or another, with the Lanzador-inspired GT 2+2 to follow as a plug-in hybrid. ²⁵

A return of a manual gearbox is not a priority either. Racchetti acknowledged some customers will keep asking for a manual because of its link to brand tradition, but said Lamborghini's current focus is further developing its new vehicle architecture, according to ua.news's report of the Motor1 interview. zoomit.ir carried the same position, quoting Racchetti that the brand's nature is built on continuous evolution and that its focus is maximising its current advanced architectures. ²⁵⁴

Record sales and the exclusivity question

Even as high performance becomes democratised, Lamborghini's commercial results have kept climbing. CarExpert reports the brand has recorded five consecutive years of record sales, including 10,747 deliveries globally in 2025 — its third straight year above 10,000 cars. In Australia, CarExpert separately reported 272 Lamborghinis were sold in 2025, one fewer than in 2024, but more than Maserati (263) and Ferrari (220) locally, while Ferrari outsold Lamborghini globally with 13,640 deliveries. ¹³⁶

At the August 2026 announcement of the Revuelto SV, Lamborghini sales and marketing boss Federico Foschini told CarExpert that success has not diluted the brand's exclusivity: "Exclusivity has never been determined simply by production volume." He pointed to the balance between market demand and exclusivity, low-volume projects such as the Revuelto-based Fenomeno — limited to 29 coupes with a run of 15 roadsters announced this year — and the Ad Personam personalisation program as ways the marque sustains its cachet alongside its core range. ⁶
