The award announcement and the jury's verdict

The 2026 World Car Awards were concluded with a live announcement in New York City on Wednesday, 1 April 2026, the first press preview day of the New York International Auto Show. The official World Car Awards release confirmed that the BMW iX3 is the 2026 World Car of the Year, selected from an initial list of 58 contenders by a jury of 98 international automotive journalists from 33 countries voting by secret ballot, with vote results tabulated by KPMG. The shortlist of three finalists had been announced on 3 March 2026, with the iX3 joining the Hyundai Palisade and Nissan Leaf in the Top Three in the World. 1

BMW's own release, issued from New York and Munich the same day, reported that during extensive test drives the model impressed the jury with its performance, driving dynamics and technology features, and that jury members collectively reach more than 413 million readers. The German carmaker framed the result as a triumph for the BMW Group and its Neue Klasse programme, marking the group's tenth and eleventh title wins in the awards' history. Both the organiser's and the manufacturer's accounts describe the same result, with the organiser's release independently confirming the winner and the runner-up field. 12

Reporting by BMWBlog on the day of the announcement noted that this was BMW's second World Car of the Year win overall, the last being the BMW 3 Series in 2006, and that the iX3 beat the Hyundai Palisade and Nissan Leaf to the title. BMWBlog also reported that BMW's M2 CS did not claim the World Performance Car accolade, which went to the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N ahead of the Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray. 7

A documented commercial milestone behind the result

According to BMWBlog's same-day report, the second-generation iX3 had already secured 50,000 orders in a matter of months before the awards were announced, a commercial figure the outlet presented alongside the jury result. BMW's own award release described the first Neue Klasse model, presented at IAA Mobility 2025, as an instant success, but did not publish an order count in that announcement; the 50,000 figure is BMWBlog's reported milestone rather than a figure in the official awards or manufacturer award documents. 27

The World Electric Vehicle title

Alongside the overall win, the BMW iX3 was also named the 2026 World Electric Vehicle. BMW's release stated that 43 vehicles were in the running for that title, and that the awards were announced at the 2026 New York International Auto Show, which ran from 1 to 12 April 2026. BMWBlog, in its same-day report, listed the iX3 as finishing ahead of the Mercedes-Benz CLA and Nissan Leaf in that category, and characterised the award as BMW's first World Electric Vehicle title after two earlier World Green Car wins, for the BMW 118d in 2008 and the i3 in 2014. 27

The awards program distinguishes the two categories by eligibility rules. According to the World Car Awards announcement, World Car of the Year contenders must be produced in volumes of at least 10,000 units a year, priced below luxury-car level in their primary markets, and on sale in at least two major markets on at least two separate continents between 1 January 2025 and 30 March 2026. World Electric Vehicle contenders must be produced in volumes of at least 5,000 units a year, with the same multi-market sale requirement. 12

The car behind the result: iX3 50 xDrive specifications

The winning vehicle in BMW's announcement is the BMW iX3 50 xDrive, the first model of the Neue Klasse, presented at IAA Mobility 2025. BMW specifies two electric motors delivering 345 kW/469 hp and 645 Nm of torque, a 0-100 km/h time of 4.9 seconds and a top speed of 210 km/h. Combined energy consumption is listed at 17.9-15.1 kWh/100 km on the WLTP cycle, with an electric range of 678-805 km WLTP and a combined CO2 figure of 0 g/km. For North American readers, BMW's Canadian release lists an EPA-estimated range of up to 650 km and output of 463 hp and 476 lb-ft for the same model, a market-specific presentation of the same vehicle. 235

BMW attributes the iX3's capabilities to its sixth-generation eDrive technology, which combines a new high-voltage battery concept with 800-volt architecture, DC charging at up to 400 kW and support for bidirectional charging. The iX3 50 xDrive battery provides 108.7 kWh of usable energy, enabling up to 805 km on the WLTP cycle, and BMW states that at a DC fast charger energy for up to 372 km of range can be added in 10 minutes. These are the manufacturer's WLTP-based figures for the German-market vehicle; Australian availability and specifications are not addressed in this retrospective's source material. 25

The interior is built around BMW Panoramic iDrive on BMW Operating System X, combining the A-pillar-to-A-pillar Panoramic Vision windscreen projection, a 17.9-inch Free-Cut Design central display, an optional 3D head-up display and a multifunction steering wheel with Shy Tech controls. BMW also highlights its four 'superbrain' high-performance computers, including the Heart of Joy control unit for driving dynamics paired with in-house Dynamic Performance Control software, which it says delivers up to 20 times the computing power of previous BMW models. 24

Zipse named World Car Person of the Year

Before the New York ceremony, BMW Group chairman Oliver Zipse had been named 2026 World Car Person of the Year, announced on 26 February according to BMW's release. BMW attributes the jury's reasoning to its own account of the decision, quoting the jury as saying that under Zipse's leadership BMW had pursued a technology-open approach to electrification, digitalisation and sustainability while maintaining brand identity and profitability. BMW's release links the Neue Klasse development to Zipse's tenure as chairman of the board of management since 2019. 24

How the result sits in the awards' history

The World Car Awards were inaugurated in 2003 and officially launched in January 2004, and are now in their 22nd year. The organiser's release describes the program as complementing, rather than competing with, national and regional car of the year awards, and states that the New York International Automobile Show, owned and produced by the Greater New York Automobile Dealers Association, hosted the announcement. Show president Mark Schienberg said the World Car Awards are a global benchmark for excellence, and the finals were powered by Brembo, whose chief executive Daniele Schillaci offered congratulations to the winners across all six categories. 1

BMW's release places the 2026 double win in a longer record: the group had previously won nine World Car Awards titles, with the BMW 3 Series' 2006 World Car of the Year win singled out as a highlight. BMW also lists other recent accolades for the iX3, including Best Cars awards from German magazine auto motor und sport, the What Car? Car of the Year Awards 2026 in Britain, Car of the Year titles in several other countries, and a Golden Steering Wheel award for Best Innovation from Auto Bild and Bild am Sonntag. The 2026 New York announcement therefore capped a run of independent recognition for the first Neue Klasse model, as documented in the awards program's official result and BMW's own awards summary. 26
