Subaru Outback AWD Wilderness joins Supercars support fleet as prices and specs land

Subaru expands its Supercars support fleet

Supercars said it unveiled a new Safety Car and course car fleet for the 2026 Repco Supercars Championship, with Subaru expanding its role to become the exclusive supplier of all on-track support vehicles. In the Supercars announcement, Subaru’s previous involvement is described as the Official Course Car Vehicle since 2024, and the 2026 program adds the Official Safety Car and Official Medical Car roles. Supercars also said Shannons Insurance is again supporting the Safety Car program. ¹

According to Supercars, the refreshed fleet is led by the Subaru WRX AWD tS SpecB, which will serve as both the Official Safety Car and Official Course Car, while the all-new Subaru Outback AWD Wilderness will be the Official Medical Vehicle. Supercars said the new Subaru and Shannons-supported fleet would make its first public appearance at the DUNLOP Sydney 500 from 20–22 February 2026 at Sydney Motorsport Park. ¹

Pricing and line-up position

Subaru Australia’s listed manufacturer pricing places the Outback AWD Wilderness at $59,690 before on-road costs and the Outback AWD Wilderness Apex at $62,690 before on-road costs. RACQ reported the same manufacturer’s list prices and described the Wilderness variants as the new off-road-focused turbocharged models at the top end of the seventh-generation Outback range. ⁴⁵

Torquecafe said Subaru Australia opened orders for the new seventh-generation Outback with five Australian variants in total: three naturally aspirated 2.5-litre models and two turbocharged 2.4-litre Wilderness grades. It said the broader range begins at $48,990 before on-road costs for the Outback AWD and extends to $62,690 before on-road costs for the Wilderness Apex. ⁴

Confirmed Wilderness specifications

The Wilderness variants are powered exclusively by a 2.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder boxer engine producing 194kW and 382Nm. Subaru pairs it with a Lineartronic CVT with eight-speed manual mode and symmetrical all-wheel drive, while RACQ said the revised final reduction ratio is calibrated to make the most of the increased low-rev output. ⁴⁵

RACQ said the Wilderness grades also gain electronically controlled dampers linked with X-Mode, improved torque split control and 240mm of ground clearance. For comparison, RACQ said the non-turbo Outback variants clear 220mm and use Subaru’s updated 2.5-litre naturally aspirated boxer engine with the same Lineartronic CVT. ⁴⁵

Subaru’s range information and RACQ’s coverage both point to an expanded cabin and equipment set for the new Outback. Reported items include the 12.1-inch horizontal infotainment touchscreen, 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, increased headroom, a taller cargo opening and roof rails with a 363kg static load rating. ⁴⁵

Rally-stage test and accessory pricing

CarExpert’s 15 September 2026 review of the 2027 Subaru Outback Wilderness Apex was conducted on two Sunraysia Safari Rally stages and focused on the car’s off-road ability in harsh conditions. The publication said Subaru’s event vehicles were fitted with optional all-terrain tyres on new 18-inch alloy wheels, available in sets of four or five for $4,286.93 and $5,274.12 respectively. ²³

In that test, CarExpert said the Outback Wilderness Apex’s 2.4-litre turbo boxer produced 194kW and 382Nm and that the vehicle remained composed over ruts, bog holes and rough ground. It also said the suspension kept the body in check well and the ride height helped the car clear obstacles, while the engine had enough performance for the environment when manual mode was used. ²³

CarExpert also reported clear limits. It said the CVT was smooth in normal driving but lacked the sharpness needed for harder off-road use, and that traction control could not be fully disabled, becoming intrusive in deep sand and whenever sideways movement was likely. ²³

Model context and timing

The Outback Wilderness sits within Subaru’s wider shift for the nameplate, which Torquecafe and RACQ described as a major redesign for the seventh generation. Subaru’s own range material shows the Outback Wilderness as part of the 2026 line-up, while Supercars’ February 2026 announcement places the model in a visible championship support role soon after the local range was opened for orders. ⁴⁵¹
