Record diesel prices sharpen the Washington debate

The latest debate in Washington was driven by a sharp rise in US diesel prices to record territory. Coverage in mid-September put the national average at about US$6.31 a gallon, while reports dated 21 and 22 September said it had climbed to roughly US$6.50-US$6.51 a gallon. Against that backdrop, Republican lawmakers were reported to be weighing export restrictions as a way to relieve domestic prices, with Senate Majority Leader John Thune described in one report as open to exploring a ban, while other coverage also cited pressure from Iowa Sen. The White House has not announced diesel export restrictions. A White House official said on 21 September that the administration was not considering banning or restricting diesel exports at that time. Why analysts say a ban may not deliver quick relief
