Bapcor trade and Networks sales return to growth as turnaround shows early FY27 traction

The ASX-listed aftermarket group has reaffirmed its FY27 outlook after September-quarter trade parts sales rose 2.5 per cent and Networks sales lifted 4.1 per cent, though retail remains under cost-of-living pressure and full-year profit is expected to be materially second-half weighted.

Q1 trading update leads with trade and Networks growth

ASX-listed automotive aftermarket group Bapcor has reported higher trade and network sales in the first quarter of its 2027 financial year, in a trading update delivered at the company's 2026 annual general meeting on October 22, as reported by AutoTalk. Total trade parts sales increased 2.5 per cent compared with the first quarter of FY26 and were up 1.6 per cent on a like-for-like basis, with chief executive and managing director Chris Wilesmith saying the company also gained market share in its trade business. 12

"This is a positive sign that our focus on competitive pricing, product availability and customer engagement is beginning to deliver results," Wilesmith said, according to AutoTalk. Sales across Bapcor's Networks businesses, comprising Commercial Vehicle Group, JAS and Wholesale, increased 4.1 per cent, while the New Zealand operations delivered modest like-for-like growth in local currency. 13

Across the group, like-for-like sales increased 0.5 per cent on a constant-currency basis and total sales rose 0.3 per cent on the same basis. However, AutoTalk reports that reported total sales declined 0.5 per cent following the closure of unprofitable retail stores, a distinction between currency-adjusted and reported outcomes the company's update makes explicit. 12

Small Caps attributes the trade improvement to pricing changes, stronger product availability and renewed customer engagement, with management identifying higher trade market share than in the corresponding quarter. Bapcor says gross margin percentage improved in both Trade and Retail versus Q1 FY26, which the company attributes to targeted pricing initiatives introduced during the second half of FY26. 32

Retail remains the soft spot

Retail conditions remain challenging. Bapcor says cost-of-living pressures and less effective promotional activity weighed on total and like-for-like retail sales, with growth in non-discretionary categories more than offset by declines in discretionary products, according to AutoTalk. 12

The company has introduced promotional activity aimed at lifting sales during the Black Friday and Christmas trading periods, and Small Caps notes the softer trading environment remains a constraint on the broader recovery even with those campaigns scheduled. 13

Balance sheet continues to strengthen

Bapcor reduced net debt by $19 million during the quarter to $116 million at 30 September 2026, primarily through operating cash flow. Small Caps reports this extends a balance-sheet improvement achieved through an earlier $200 million equity raising and tighter working capital management, which had cut net debt to $135 million by 30 June. 123

That position builds on the FY26 result, in which working capital initiatives generated $68.5 million of cash flow during the second half, lifting cash conversion from 86.5 per cent to 109.4 per cent, and net bank debt was cut by $229.8 million to $135 million, AutoTalk reported at the time. 6

During the FY26 reporting, Wilesmith attributed the second-half weighting of FY27 profit partly to the maturation of data-led pricing capabilities being rolled out across the group, alongside range refreshes with trade partners and reduced discretionary discounting, according to GuruFocus coverage of the earnings call carried by Yahoo Finance. 7

FY27 outlook reaffirmed despite external headwinds

Bapcor has reaffirmed its FY27 outlook, with underlying net profit after tax expected to be weighted materially towards the second half and modest revenue growth expected for the full year. The company says the Middle East conflict and cost-of-living pressures are moderating the benefits of its turnaround programme, and plans to reinvest much of those benefits in technology and staff, with capital expenditure, depreciation and amortisation expected to remain broadly in line with FY26, AutoTalk reports. 12

"The first-quarter performance provides further evidence that our turnaround initiatives are gaining traction, and we remain confident on delivering against our FY27 outlook expectations," Wilesmith said, as quoted by AutoTalk and Inside Retail. 14

The outlook gives no NPAT or revenue figure, and the trading update reports no profit result for the quarter, Surestone notes in its summary of the company's release. 2

Portfolio review and the path from reset

Bapcor is reviewing its portfolio as part of a broader strategy reset, with smaller non-core businesses potentially being sold. The company plans to concentrate on four areas: passenger and light commercial vehicle parts distribution, heavy commercial vehicle parts distribution, automotive parts and accessories retailing, and passenger and light commercial vehicle servicing and repairs, AutoTalk reports. 1

The quarter's trading gains follow a heavy FY26, in which Bapcor reported revenue of $1.92 billion, down 1.8 per cent, underlying NPAT of $10.8 million, down 85 per cent, and a statutory net loss after tax of $431.6 million including $442.4 million of post-tax significant items largely relating to non-cash asset impairments, as AutoTalk reported on 31 August. 16

Inside Retail reports the review has seen continued store closures, which have dented the bottom line, and quotes Wilesmith describing early signs of green shoots for FY27 despite the troubling retail environment. At the AGM, shareholders approved all eight resolutions including director re-elections and long-term incentive plans for Wilesmith, according to The Bull. 45

On the earnings call, Wilesmith reiterated a consistent timeline of six to 24 months for the business to progress from turnaround to growth company, saying stabilisation had been proven and momentum building in FY27, with strategic execution maturing into FY28, per GuruFocus coverage carried by Yahoo Finance. 7
