Chery Stockman: diesel-hybrid specifications, demand and Australian launch plans

The announcement and the order process

Chery is preparing to open its formal online pre-order system for the Stockman on 1 October, following the diesel plug-in hybrid ute’s public appearance at Everything Electric in Sydney. The company had advertised the 18–20 September event as Australians’ first public opportunity to see the model. Its August announcement about local development set out a planned Australian arrival in late 2026; current reporting places showroom arrival in the fourth quarter. ¹⁵⁶

There is an important distinction between the forthcoming online opening and the orders already reported by dealers. Chery Motor Australia chief operating officer Lucas Harris told carsales that registrations of interest were close to 10,000 and pre-orders were approaching 2,000. He described the existing orders as customers approaching dealerships before the formal system opened. Harris also said an incentive would accompany online pre-orders and that existing dealer customers would need to enter that system to receive it. ¹

Interest has grown, but these are not delivery figures

The September numbers extend an earlier manufacturer update. In July, CarExpert reported more than 5,000 expressions of interest and more than 1,000 deposits, based on information from Chery. Both updates describe activity before the Australian launch. They are successive manufacturer-supplied measures of interest and orders, rather than independently audited sales or customer-delivery totals. The latest carsales report says launch pricing and grades are still to be confirmed. ¹³

Diesel and electric power, with preliminary specifications

The Stockman’s announced drivetrain combines a 2.5-litre turbo-diesel engine with plug-in hybrid hardware and four-wheel drive. Chery lists combined output of 350kW and 800Nm, with electric-only range of up to 100km measured under the NEDC test cycle. CarExpert’s specification report repeats those figures and distinguishes NEDC from WLTP. The range should therefore retain its stated test basis when compared with other vehicles. ²⁴

Chery’s model page also advertises combined fuel consumption of 2L/100km. Its disclaimer is material: electric range, fuel consumption, towing capacity and system output are preliminary and may change following final testing, certification and regulatory approval. These are the manufacturer’s published figures, not results from an independent Australian road test. Carsales describes a battery of at least 30kWh as understood but unconfirmed; it should not be treated as a final specification. ¹²

Towing, dimensions and off-road equipment

Published towing capacities are 3,500kg with trailer brakes and 750kg without. Chery lists double-wishbone front suspension, leaf springs at the rear, all-terrain tyres and at least 247mm ground clearance at full load. Its advertised off-road equipment includes individually selectable front, centre and rear differential locks, crawl control and tight-turn assistance. These details remain subject to the model page’s final-specification disclaimer. ²⁴

The current dimensions are 5,450mm long, 2,010mm wide and 1,890mm high, with a 3,250mm wheelbase. The cargo box is listed at 1,560mm long and wide, and 500mm deep. CarExpert’s July report said the final cargo rating had not been disclosed, while noting Chery had previously indicated that some variants could carry up to 1,000kg. That earlier indication is not a confirmed payload for every launch variant. ²⁴

What the Australian development programme covers

Chery’s 4 August announcement appointed Australian engineering company Premcar to conduct local testing and validation before release. The programme assesses Chery’s ride and handling tuning against Australian conditions. That describes validation of the vehicle’s intended attributes; it is not evidence that independent road-test results have already established those capabilities. Chery’s model page separately says driver-assistance systems are being tuned locally and suspension calibrated for local roads and loads. ²⁶

Cabin equipment and ownership cover

Chery’s current model page advertises heated and ventilated front seats, leather seating, a flat rear floor, wireless charging and dual-zone climate control. It also lists a seven-year unlimited-kilometre vehicle warranty, seven years of capped-price servicing and an eight-year unlimited-kilometre high-voltage battery warranty. Roadside assistance starts with one complimentary year, with further annual coverage renewed through scheduled servicing at an authorised Chery dealership, up to seven years. Terms and exclusions apply. ²

The next details buyers are waiting for

The latest carsales report identifies pricing, grades and final specifications as information still to come closer to launch. Harris’s interview signals a pre-order incentive without specifying its contents, so a charger or cash benefit should not be assumed. CarExpert reports that a petrol plug-in hybrid version is planned to follow in 2027. For the initial diesel model, the October ordering milestone, later showroom arrival and final specification approval are separate steps. ¹⁴⁶
