Limited edition confirmed for Australia

Hyundai has revealed the i30 Sedan N Monochrome, a special edition the company describes as a more subtle take on its performance sedan, and Australia has been confirmed as one of the first markets to receive it. CarExpert reports the limited edition will arrive in Australian showrooms next month, with just 200 examples available locally and South Korea and Canada the only other confirmed markets. 1

Torque Cafe similarly details a 200-example Australian allocation for the darkened performance car, on sale locally alongside South Korea and Canada. Exhaust Notes Australia adds that the Monochrome will go on sale in Korea first before reaching Canadian and Australian dealerships, with more details, including pricing, to be announced closer to launch. Taiwanese outlet Auto Online reports Korean sales are expected to begin at the end of October, with some markets receiving the car on a limited basis before a wider global rollout. 243

Understated styling in two colours

The Monochrome treatment replaces the regular i30 Sedan N's bright red accents with a darker, more restrained theme. According to CarExpert, the two available exterior colours are Abyss Black Pearl, a $595 premium paint option on the regular i30 Sedan N, and the no-cost Performance Blue, teamed with newly designed 19-inch forged alloy wheels finished in black, with the usual red brake calipers also painted black. Darker elements extend to the front bumper, side sills and rear diffuser, while unpainted carbon-fibre mirror caps and a rear spoiler complete the look. Torque Cafe notes the lower red trim of the standard car is painted in the body colour, with the front bumper inlays black rather than body-coloured. 12

Inside, the special edition carries an exclusive Alcantara-trimmed steering wheel with all buttons finished in black, and Alcantara is also used elsewhere, including on the seats in place of the leather in the regular i30 Sedan N, per CarExpert. Torque Cafe adds that the Monochrome is the only variant of the model to get an Alcantara steering wheel and gear selector or shifter boot. Exhaust Notes Australia lists the revised front and rear bumpers, side sills, brake calipers and rear diffuser among the changed components, along with the carbon-fibre rear spoiler and mirrors. 124

Hyundai's N division head framed the design direction in a company statement quoted by CarExpert. "Having listened to customers' voices for a toned-down high-performance model, we restrained visual emphases and focused on form, texture and material to create a monochromatic rendition of the i30 Sedan N that is understated, yet undeniably N," said Joon Park, vice president and head of Hyundai's N high-performance division. 1

Mechanicals unchanged, transmission split confirmed

There are no mechanical changes for the Monochrome. CarExpert confirms the 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine continues at 206kW and 392Nm, driving the front wheels, a figure Torque Cafe also cites as unchanged. Buyers retain the choice of six-speed manual or eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, which Torque Cafe notes makes the i30 Sedan N one of the few offerings in its segment to offer both. 12

Hyundai Australia has confirmed the 200 local Monochromes will include a mix of manual and DCT versions, with around 170 equipped with the DCT. CarExpert reports this allocation broadly reflects the standard i30 Sedan N's sales mix, in which around 90 per cent of buyers choose the DCT. 1

Pricing still to be confirmed

Pricing and further details for the Monochrome have not yet been confirmed. CarExpert expects the special edition to cost more than the standard i30 Sedan N, which is currently priced at $53,500 before on-road costs in either six-speed manual or eight-speed dual-clutch automatic guise. Exhaust Notes Australia likewise notes pricing will be announced closer to launch, so buyers awaiting confirmation should treat any figure above the standard car's list price as an expectation rather than a confirmed amount. 14

A run-out special before a new generation

The Monochrome effectively serves as a run-out model for the current i30 Sedan N, which arrived in Australian showrooms in 2021, according to CarExpert. The publication notes it follows the template set by the i20 N Shadow Edition, announced in June 2026 to mark the end of the smaller hatchback. The current i30 Hatch N is also nearing the end of its Australian run, with stock expected to last into 2027, and non-N versions of the i30 Hatch already discontinued locally. 1

A new generation of the i30 Sedan was revealed in June 2026 with a more aggressively styled exterior, and is expected to arrive in Australia with petrol and hybrid powertrains in the first half of 2027, though an N version is yet to be shown. Separately, Torque Cafe reports that Sang Yup Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of Hyundai's global design department, said in June, according to CarSceneKorea: "Even at this very moment, we're preparing the sportiest Elantra (i30 Sedan) yet." Torque Cafe also cites The Korean Car Blog in reporting the next i30 Sedan N is expected to be the first Hyundai N car to receive a new-generation 2.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which debuted in TCR-based Elantra racers at the Nürburgring 24 Hour in May. 12

The sedan's place in N's Australian history

The i30 Sedan N has been a strong performer for Hyundai's local N division. CarExpert reports the sedan has accounted for almost a quarter of N model sales in Australia since the division's local debut in 2018, contributing 5420 of 22,474 sales to the end of September 2026, second only to the i30 Hatch N, which has accounted for more than half of the division's local sales. Across the broader range, which also includes the i20 N, Kona N and electric Ioniq 5 N and Ioniq 6 N, N models have accounted for four per cent of Hyundai Australia's sales year-to-date. 1
