October launch planned for Chery’s new brand

Chery’s Lepas brand plans to launch in Australia in October 2026 with the L6 EV, a mid-size electric SUV. CarExpert and GoAuto reported the October timetable after a Sydney media preview, while GoAuto subsequently reported that the L6 and smaller L4 EV made their public debuts at September’s Everything Electric show. The October date is a planned launch, rather than a stated date for first customer deliveries. ²³⁴

Lepas has opened an Australian L6 EV page inviting people to register their interest. CarExpert reported that the vehicles shown at the media preview were pre-production examples and that specifications could change before launch. That qualification applies to the previewed vehicle; equipment described on Lepas’s Australian page is set out below as the manufacturer presents it. ¹³

Motor, battery and differing range figures

The Australian L6 EV has been described by CarExpert and the NRMA as having a front-mounted electric motor producing 160kW and 275Nm, supplied by a 65kWh lithium iron phosphate battery. Lepas’s Australian website also specifies a 65kWh battery in the conditions for its running-cost calculator. These figures relate to the electric L6, not the plug-in hybrid version scheduled to follow. ³⁵¹

There is a range difference in the September figures. Lepas’s Australian website uses 440km of pure-electric range in its calculator conditions, matching the 440km WLTP figure reported by CarExpert. The NRMA instead reported a claimed 450km WLTP range for the L6 EV. Neither the website text nor those reports explains the 10km difference, so 450km should not be presented as a revision of the manufacturer’s current 440km website figure. ¹³⁵

The NRMA reported a maximum DC charging rate of 120kW and a 22-minute charge from 30 to 80 per cent. Those are reported specifications, not an independently measured charging result. The same report described the L6 as a five-seat SUV. ⁵

Cabin, parking and cargo equipment

Lepas’s Australian L6 EV page describes a 13.2-inch central display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an 8.88-inch instrument display, wireless phone charging and an eight-speaker Sony sound system. It also lists power-adjustable, heated and ventilated front seats and a panoramic glass roof. The NRMA reported these among the equipment planned for the Australian vehicle, along with seven airbags and a powered tailgate. ¹⁵

For manoeuvring, Lepas lists a 360-degree camera system and automatic parking that controls steering, braking and acceleration. It also describes a remote parking function operated with the smart key from outside the vehicle. The manufacturer quotes 323 litres of boot space, a 63-litre underfloor compartment and more than 1255 litres with the rear seats flat. Its Australian page states that the L6’s high-voltage battery carries an eight-year, 200,000km warranty from first registration. ¹

Price remains to be announced

Lepas had not announced an Australian list price in the September launch reporting: both GoAuto and the NRMA said pricing was expected closer to the October launch. A Drive report reproduced in a Ground News listing said the L6 EV was slated to start below $50,000 before on-road costs. That is a reported prospective starting figure, not an announced manufacturer price or a drive-away offer. ²⁵⁶

Further Lepas models are scheduled

The L6 EV is the first vehicle in a broader Australian rollout. GoAuto and CarExpert reported that the smaller L4 EV is scheduled for December 2026, followed by an L6 plug-in hybrid in March 2027 and an L4 plug-in hybrid in June. CarExpert said the L6 and L4 EVs share a 2700mm wheelbase, 65kWh LFP battery and 160kW/275Nm front-mounted motor, but quoted a longer 450km WLTP range for the smaller L4. That L4 figure should not be applied to the L6. ²³

Further out, both publications reported plans for an L8 plug-in hybrid in September 2027 and an L9 plug-in hybrid in the second half of that year, with electric L8 and L9 models and an L2 hatchback planned for early 2028. These are scheduled future launches, not vehicles already on sale in Australia. ²³
