Nissan Terrano plug-in hybrid SUV under active consideration for Australia, says Nissan Oceania

Nissan Oceania managing director Steve Milette says the Dongfeng-built Terrano PHEV is one of several China-sourced models being evaluated for Australia, with the confirmed Navara Pro PHEV ute leading the local charge in 2027 amid a sales slide.

Terrano PHEV confirmed as a live business case, not a launch

Nissan Australia has put the Terrano plug-in hybrid SUV firmly on its list of candidate models, but has stopped short of committing to a local launch. Speaking with GoAuto, Nissan Oceania managing director Steve Milette said the company is considering several vehicles developed through its partnership with China's Dongfeng Motor Corporation, including the recently unveiled Terrano PHEV. "The Terrano is absolutely something that we are actively looking at," he said, adding that "there are business cases that we're looking at actively today" and "nothing that we can announce formally, but there are other prototypes circling the country." 2

Support for the model also extends beyond the local operation. Speaking to Chasing Cars at the Terrano's Beijing reveal, Nissan's global corporate executive for family, product and component strategy, Richard Candler, said: "[The Terrano] three-row frame SUV is a very good candidate [for] Australia, sourced from China. It's a really good opportunity." Chasing Cars noted at the time that the model was not directly confirmed for an Australian launch. 6

Chasing Cars likewise reported on October 12, 2026 that Nissan has confirmed the Terrano large SUV is under consideration for Australia, describing the model as sitting on the same platform as the incoming Navara Pro PHEV. The publication noted the confirmed ute will go on sale in Australia in the second half of 2027 as the sixth-generation Navara, sold alongside the current 'fifth-gen' diesel Navara based on the Mitsubishi Triton. 15

The candidate status extends to a broader wave of China-sourced Nissans. In comments to CarExpert published by 7NEWS, Milette said "today is the first of more to come", naming the N7 sedan, NX7 and NX8 SUVs and a production Terrano PHEV as potential candidates, all products of the Dongfeng joint venture. "We're looking at all of them, and they're all individual business cases. They may not all make it to market," he told CarExpert. 3

The evaluation push comes with Nissan Australia's local sales under pressure. CarExpert reported Nissan Australia posted a 32.2 per cent year-on-year sales slump across the first four months of 2026, nearly double the 16.5 per cent decline recorded over the same period in 2025, after full-year 2025 sales fell 21.6 per cent. Milette told CarExpert the decline was not a surprise, citing portfolio changes and inventory rebalancing, including limited Qashqai stock and the transition from the D23 Navara to the new model. 4
