Mazda Tech Drive: The Electrification Explainer - MHEV

Mazda’s Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle (MHEV) technology, and how it works.

The term ‘hybrid’ is commonly used with cars today.

You probably know it’s synonymous with lower exhaust emissions and has something to do with ‘electrification’, but what does the ‘mild’ part refer to?

Join Karl Reinder and the Mazda CX-70 in this quick video.

Karl Reindler: You've probably heard terms like EV, MHEV and PHEV and wondered what they actually mean.

The good news is that vehicle electrification is simpler than it might seem.

In this Mazda Tech Drive series, we'll break down the different types of electrified vehicles using practical examples from Mazda's range, helping you understand how each technology works, what it feels like to drive, and which option may best suit your lifestyle.

Before we look at specific vehicles, it helps to understand the three main types of electrification available today.

The Three Types of Vehicle Electrification

The first is MHEV, or Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle. The second is PHEV, or Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle. The third is BEV, or Battery Electric Vehicle, commonly referred to as a fully electric vehicle.

The key difference between these technologies comes down to how much the vehicle relies on electricity compared with a traditional internal combustion engine.

What Is a Mild Hybrid (MHEV)?

Let's start with the most familiar option: the Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle (MHEV).

Using the Mazda CX-70 as an example, an MHEV is primarily powered by a petrol engine, supported by a small electric motor and battery system.

In everyday driving, the electric system assists the engine during certain driving conditions, helping improve fuel efficiency and overall performance.

What's It Like to Drive a Mild Hybrid?

From behind the wheel, the driving experience feels very familiar. The petrol engine continues to do most of the work, while the electric system provides support in the background.

Do You Need to Charge a Mild Hybrid?

One of the key benefits of an MHEV is convenience. Unlike a plug-in hybrid or fully electric vehicle, a mild hybrid does not need to be plugged in to charge. The battery is automatically recharged while driving.

For many drivers, a mild hybrid can provide some of the benefits of electrification without requiring any changes to their daily routine.

When choosing between an MHEV, PHEV or BEV, there is no single solution that suits everyone. The right choice depends on your driving habits, lifestyle and vehicle requirements.

In future episodes, we'll explore plug-in hybrid and battery electric vehicles in more detail to help you understand the differences and find the Mazda that best suits your needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a mild hybrid electric vehicle (MHEV)?

A mild hybrid is primarily powered by a petrol engine, supported by a small electric motor and battery. The electric system assists the engine during certain driving conditions to improve fuel efficiency and performance. Mazda uses the CX-70 as an example in this episode.

Do you need to plug in a mild hybrid to charge it?

No. Unlike a plug-in hybrid or a fully electric vehicle, a mild hybrid never needs to be plugged in. The battery recharges automatically while you drive, so a mild hybrid delivers some of the benefits of electrification with no change to your daily routine.

What does a mild hybrid feel like to drive?

Very familiar. The petrol engine continues to do most of the work, while the electric motor provides support in the background. For most drivers, an MHEV feels just like a conventional petrol car — simply more efficient in everyday conditions.

What are the benefits of a mild hybrid?

Convenience is the standout. A mild hybrid improves fuel efficiency and performance in everyday driving, requires no charging or change to your routine, and offers an easy first step into electrification for drivers not ready for a plug-in hybrid or fully electric vehicle.

What's the difference between an MHEV, PHEV and BEV?

It comes down to how much the vehicle relies on electricity versus a petrol engine. An MHEV is petrol-led with electric assistance; a PHEV can be plugged in and driven on electric power for a distance; a BEV is fully electric.
