World premiere confirms new name and line-up change

Volkswagen has taken the wraps off the ID. Tiguan at its world premiere, confirming the electric SUV will succeed both the ID.4 and the coupe-styled ID.5 when it launches in early 2027. According to Volkswagen's press release, more than 950,000 examples of the outgoing pair have been built since 2021, and the new model will be sold in parallel with the combustion, diesel and hybrid Tiguan built at Wolfsburg, with the electric version assembled at Emden. 23

The name change is part of a broader shift away from alphanumeric badges. GoAuto reported that the ID. Tiguan follows the ID. Polo and ID. Cross in applying established model names to Volkswagen's electric range, a strategy the company says is intended to give customers clearer orientation, while the Tiguan nameplate carries weight from more than 8.3 million units produced. Volkswagen brand chief executive Thomas Schaefer said in the company's release: "The Tiguan is our best-selling model worldwide, and the ID.4 and ID.5 are among our most successful electric cars. The ID. Tiguan brings these two success stories together." 352

Powertrains, range and charging

Volkswagen will offer the ID. Tiguan in three drivetrains: a 140kW (190PS) rear-wheel drive version with a 58kWh battery, a 210kW (286PS) rear-driver with a 77kWh battery, and a 220kW (299PS) 4MOTION all-wheel drive variant also using the 77kWh pack. Depending on the configuration, WLTP range reaches up to 600km, and towing capacity is rated at up to 1800kg with the smaller battery and 2000kg with the larger one. 2

Further detail from CarExpert adds that the 58kWh battery is a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) unit — the first in Volkswagen's SUV line-up — offering up to 450km WLTP, 8.5 seconds to 100km/h and 105kW DC charging, completing a 10 to 80 per cent charge in around 26 minutes. The 77kWh nickel manganese cobalt versions charge at up to 165kW DC, taking as little as 29 minutes for the same increment. CarExpert reports the 210kW rear-driver is the range champion at a manufacturer-quoted 600km, with the all-wheel drive model covering up to 560km and sprinting to 100km/h in 6.3 seconds. 4

Chasing Cars notes the 165kW maximum DC rate is actually a slight decrease from the outgoing ID.4's 175kW, and observes that the 77kWh battery and 210kW/545Nm rear motor mirror today's Australian-spec ID.4 Pro, meaning the principal gain is range rather than performance. Chasing Cars also records dimensions of 4618mm long, 1855mm wide and 1619mm tall on a 2765mm wheelbase, with drag improving from 0.27Cd to 0.26Cd, boot space of 534 litres (down from 543L) and a new 32-litre frunk. 1

Interior reset and technology

The cabin adopts a new display layout, with Volkswagen confirming a 10-inch Digital Cockpit, a 15-inch central infotainment screen and — for the first time in a European Volkswagen — an optional 12-inch co-driver display that uses privacy-filtering so the driver cannot see it. Physical controls return throughout, including buttons on the multifunction steering wheel, a climate control bar in the centre console and a rotary volume controller. Standard equipment includes one-pedal driving and the new Connected Travel Assist, which can assist lane changes on motorways and bring the car to a stop at red traffic lights it recognises. 27

Optional kit includes electrically adjustable front seats with massage, memory and ventilation, a 480-watt Harman Kardon sound system and a panoramic sunroof. A 'Retro' display mode recreates the blue-red instruments of a Golf IV in the Digital Cockpit, and the infotainment screen can show a virtual garage of six classic models: Golf I, Golf II Country, Golf IV, first-generation Tiguan, Race Touareg and Beetle. Volkswagen also lists a Digital Key shareable via the app and a PowerSocket vehicle-to-load adapter for powering external devices. 274

European pricing and availability

Volkswagen says pre-sales open in Germany and many other European countries on 13 October at prices from €42,695, with the model offered in four equipment grades: Trend, Life, Style and R-Line. Electrek reported the same launch date and starting price, noting US pricing has yet to be announced and that Volkswagen plans to use the ID. Tiguan to replace the ID.4 in North America after the early-2027 European rollout. Australian pricing and specifications have not been announced. 27

CarExpert reports the ID. Tiguan is due in Australia during the first half of 2027, though Chasing Cars quotes a Volkswagen Australia spokesperson saying the company is "unable to comment on future product timing or availability at this stage" while remaining committed to bringing its latest electric vehicles to local customers. Neither outlet cites an announced Australian price. 41

The ID.4 it replaces, and the local context

The outgoing ID.4 received a 2027 model-year update in Australia just before its replacement debuted. CarExpert reports the MY27 ID.4 Pro now starts at $60,990 before on-road costs (up $1000), or $65,990 drive-away until 31 December 2026, gaining a larger 84kWh battery, 546km WLTP range, built-in satellite navigation and the return of physical steering wheel buttons, while the GTX rises to $70,990 list ($75,990 drive-away) with 522km WLTP. These are the current offer prices and should not be read as a comparison with the European ID. Tiguan's €42,695 pre-sales figure, which is a different market and basis. 6

The ID.4 only reached Australia in 2025, roughly four and a half years after its European launch, as GoAuto has documented, with Volkswagen Australia positioning the ID.4 Pro as the foundation of its local ID range. Chasing Cars counts 1196 ID.4 and 386 ID.5 sales in 2025, plus 1819 combined to September 2026, and notes the ID.4 competes locally against the Tesla Model Y, BYD Sealion 7, Kia EV5 and Zeekr 7X. GoAuto also records that Volkswagen Australia has yet to confirm whether the ID. Tiguan will succeed the ID.4 and ID.5 locally, while the ID.5's deletion removes the coupe-styled variant from the line-up entirely. 51
