New pair, sharply priced

BYD has launched two significant models together in Australia: the Atto 2 DM-i plug-in hybrid small SUV and the Atto 3 Evo, a substantial update to the electric SUV that introduced the brand here in 2022. GoAuto's launch review describes both as high-stakes models for the company, and the pricing is aggressive — the Atto 2 DM-i Essential opens at $24,990 before on-road costs, which GoAuto and CarExpert each identify as the cheapest plug-in hybrid on the Australian market, a title previously held by BYD's own Sealion 5. 127

CarExpert notes the DM-i also stands alone as the first and so far only mainstream plug-in hybrid small SUV on sale here, and that the next-cheapest PHEV remains BYD's Sealion 5 at $33,990 before on-roads. GoAuto adds the caveat that remaining stock of the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross PHEV was still available at the time of writing, with the DM-i otherwise unchallenged in the sub-$45,000 small SUV space. Its most obvious rivals, per GoAuto, are petrol and hybrid alternatives such as the Toyota Corolla Cross, GWM Haval Jolion Hybrid and Chery Tiggo 4 Hybrid. 712

The Atto 3 Evo is priced at $41,990 plus ORCs for the Dynamic and $46,990 plus ORCs for the Premium, each $2000 up on the outgoing Atto 3 equivalents, according to GoAuto's August new-model report. That report details the flagship's overhaul: a switch to rear-wheel drive, an 800-volt electrical architecture, a larger 74.88kWh Blade battery, 230kW/380Nm outputs, a claimed 510km WLTP range and 220kW DC charging cutting zero-to-80 per cent times to 25 minutes. First Australian deliveries were slated for September, with orders open ahead of them. 4

Atto 2 DM-i: what you get for the money

The entry Essential pairs a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine with a front-mounted electric motor for a combined 122kW/300Nm, a 0-100km/h claim of 9.1 seconds, a 7.85kWh battery and 39km of electric-only WLTP range, with a total range of 845km quoted by GoAuto. The Premium lifts output to 156kW, drops the sprint claim to 7.5 seconds and, with an 18.03kWh battery, extends electric range to 90km and total range to 895km. Claimed combined fuel use is 1.8L/100km (Essential) and 0.7L/100km (Premium) above a 25 per cent battery state of charge, per GoAuto's figures. 12

CarExpert's spec sheet broadly matches and adds detail: both grades use an e-CVT with front-wheel drive, run on 95-octane premium unleaded from a 45-litre tank, carry a 750kg braked tow rating and a 3.3kW maximum AC charge rate. Kerb weights are listed at 1510kg (Essential) and 1620kg (Premium), with CO2 figures of 41g/km and 16g/km respectively under Euro 6. 7

Equipment rises meaningfully between grades. GoAuto lists the Essential with 16-inch alloys, a 10.1-inch touchscreen, an 8.8-inch digital cluster, fabric seats and a four-speaker system, while the Premium at $29,990 adds 17-inch wheels, a panoramic sunroof, heated and power-adjustable front seats, a 12.8-inch touchscreen, an eight-speaker system, wireless phone charging and vehicle-to-load functionality. Premium paint is a $600 option on the DM-i, and neither grade gets a spare wheel — both come with a tyre repair kit. 12

CarExpert's short launch drive of the Premium praised the smooth powertrain behaviour, solid interior material quality and an 'impossibly cheap entry point', but flagged a buzzy petrol engine with vibrations through the floor and lifeless, light steering; it noted the price-leading Essential was not available to drive. GoAuto's drive on fast country roads found the ride notably firm but the car surprisingly fun, with quick, precise steering — its trip computer returning 3.8L/100km and 2.9kWh/100km over a 30km country stint. Both outlets stress their drive time was limited and base-grade behaviour remains unknown beyond the spec sheet. 712

Atto 3 Evo: the quiet revolution beneath

PerthNow, carrying CarExpert's report, describes the Evo as BYD's first substantial mid-life update of a model already on sale in Australia, with exterior tweaks limited to bumpers, wheels and a new rear lighting signature. The real changes are mechanical, particularly in the Premium, and GoAuto similarly observes that the facelift looks mild but the substance sits beneath the familiar skin. 512

The Dynamic retains a 400V, front-wheel-drive layout with a 60.48kWh battery, 150kW/310Nm and 420km WLTP range, charging at up to 110kW DC, per GoAuto's launch review. It supports 7kW AC charging and vehicle-to-load. Standard equipment across both Evo grades, as listed by GoAuto, includes 18-inch alloys, a 15.6-inch touchscreen, heated and ventilated power front seats, a wireless phone charger and a panoramic sunroof, with the Premium adding front cross-traffic alert and brake, driver's lumbar adjustment and dual-zone climate control. 12

CarExpert, in its quick drive published via PerthNow, notes a practical split between the grades on towing: the Premium's braked towing capacity is a substantially upgraded 1500kg, up from 750kg for the front-drive Dynamic. Both variants come standard with 3.3kW vehicle-to-load functionality. 5

On the road, GoAuto's urban-biased drive of the Premium found it smooth and refined with impressively polished NVH and non-intrusive ADAS, marred mainly by a laggy 360-degree camera; it recorded 9.7kWh/100km over its 'past 50 km' readout. CarExpert, in its quick drive published via PerthNow, found the new rear-drive layout gives better balance and agility but criticised heavy, artificial steering, a relatively firm ride, an overly sensitive driver-monitoring system and intrusive lane-keep assist on narrow country roads. It also notes the Evo Premium wears Continental EcoContact 6Q tyres as standard. 125

Dimensions

For the Atto 2 DM-i, CarExpert lists length of 4330mm, width of 1830mm, height of 1675mm and a 2620mm wheelbase, with cargo capacity of 425 litres seats-up and 1335 litres folded. GoAuto quotes the same 425L/1335L boot figures. For the Atto 3 Evo, GoAuto's August report gives 4455mm length, 1875mm width, 1615mm height and a 2720mm wheelbase, with boot space of 434L/1340L for the front-drive Dynamic and 490L/1360L plus a 101-litre frunk for the rear-drive Premium. Neither outlet states whether widths are measured with or without mirrors. 7124

Ownership, safety and sales expectations

Both models carry a six-year/150,000km vehicle warranty, an eight-year/160,000km traction battery warranty and an eight-year/150,000km drive-unit warranty, with servicing every 12 months or 20,000km, per GoAuto. Five-year capped service totals are quoted at $2230 for the Atto 2 DM-i and $1410 (Dynamic) and $1670 (Premium) for the Atto 3 Evo. CarExpert's itemised Atto 2 DM-i service schedule matches the $2230 total and adds 12 months of roadside assistance. 127

On safety, CarExpert reports the Atto 2 remains unrated by ANCAP and Euro NCAP. For the Atto 3 Evo, GoAuto's August new-model report states the updated model is yet to receive a Euro NCAP rating of its own, although its predecessor achieved five stars under the organisation's 2022 test criteria. CarExpert, via PerthNow, adds that BYD Australia says the Evo will retain the outgoing model's five-star ANCAP rating based on that 2022 Euro NCAP testing — a manufacturer claim carried by the publication, not an independent new assessment. 745

Commercially, BYD Australia chief operating officer Stephen Collins told GoAuto the company would be disappointed not to sell 1,500 Atto 2s a month across both powertrains, expecting a roughly 60:40 split favouring the plug-in hybrid, and 500 to 600 Atto 3s monthly — slightly above the pre-update model's recent average of about 475 deliveries a month between January and July 2026. Chief product officer Sajid Hasan told GoAuto the DM-i gives BYD much bigger reach in a price-conscious segment dominated by petrol and hybrid volume. These are executive forecasts, not outcomes. 6

Those model-level ambitions sit within a bigger corporate goal: GoAuto reports BYD Australia is targeting 100,000 local sales for 2026 as it seeks to consolidate its number two spot on the national sales charts behind Toyota. 6

For context on the EV sibling, GoAuto's November 2025 review of the battery-electric Atto 2 praised its plush ride, refinement and spacious back seat while criticising hypersensitive audible warnings, a glacial DC charge rate and underdamping on country roads — useful background as the DM-i now joins that line-up, with executives expecting the Atto 2 to become one of BYD's core volume models. 36
