Chery Australia recalls 1,936 Tiggo 4 Hybrids over emissions system software fault

The recall and what changed

Chery Australia has recalled the Tiggo 4 Hybrid small SUV due to an issue with the software controlling its emissions system. According to the recall notice, published on 29 September 2026 by PerthNow and CarExpert, the Evaporative Emission Control (EVAP) system valve may not operate as intended due to a software issue, and as a result the vehicle may not comply with the applicable emissions standards. Specifically, affected vehicles may not comply with Australian Design Rule 79/04 – Emissions Control for Light Vehicles. ¹

The notice states there is no safety hazard associated with the recall and that the defect will not affect the performance of the vehicle. The same recall text was carried by 7News, which republished the CarExpert report with permission. ¹²

Which vehicles are affected

A total of 1,936 vehicles are affected, produced between 2025 and 2026. The recall applies only to the Hybrid variant, with the entry-level petrol-powered Tiggo 4 models not impacted. A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) list and the original recall notice were attached to the published report, allowing owners to check whether their vehicle is involved. ¹

The repair process for owners

Owners of affected vehicles will be contacted by Chery in writing, asking them to schedule an appointment with their local dealership to have the vehicle inspected and repair work carried out, free of charge. Customers with concerns can also contact Chery Australia customer care on 1800 424 379. ¹

Previous Tiggo 4 recall activity

This is not the first software-related recall for the Tiggo 4 in Australia. Petrol versions of the model were recalled in February 2025 for a different software issue, which impacted the audible alarm for the autonomous emergency braking system. Czech publication Autohled, in a May 2026 review, separately described that February 2025 Australian recall as covering roughly two thousand cars, with the fault preventing the audible warning from sounding when the emergency brakes were activated, and noted Chery provided the repair free of charge through authorised dealers. ¹³

The Tiggo 4's market position in Australia

The recall touches Australia's most affordable new SUV range. According to CarExpert, the entry-level petrol versions of the Tiggo 4 are the cheapest SUVs on sale in Australia, although the Mahindra XUV 3XO is available from the same price with a smaller petrol engine. The Tiggo 4 is also reported to be the best-selling model in the Small SUV under $45,000 sales segment, leading the Hyundai Kona and GWM Haval Jolion. ¹

International context for the Tiggo 4 Hybrid

The hybrid variant of the Tiggo 4 has also been rolling out internationally, providing context for the model's safety and emissions standing abroad. In the United Kingdom, The Car Expert lists the Tiggo 4 as a small petrol-electric hybrid SUV launched in British showrooms in Summer 2026, priced from £19,995, with a seven-year warranty and an eight-year battery warranty. The publication notes that, as of June 2026, it was not aware of any DVSA safety recalls affecting the model in the UK, while cautioning that recall information is updated regularly. ⁴

On safety, Euro NCAP assessed the Tiggo 4 in 2025 and awarded it four stars out of five, with adult protection at 79 per cent, child protection 85 per cent, vulnerable road users 78 per cent and safety assist 80 per cent, using its technically identical sister model the Ebro S400 and extending the result to the Chery. In Australia, the combustion-engine Tiggo 4 Pro received five stars in ANCAP testing, according to Autohled. The Australian recall announced on 29 September 2026 is an emissions-compliance matter rather than a safety issue, consistent with the recall notice's statement that no safety hazard is associated with the defect. ³¹
