Dongfeng Nissan readies NX7 plug-in hybrid SUV for China launch, with Australia on the watch list

Nissan's Chinese joint venture has confirmed the NX7 plug-in hybrid SUV is coming soon, with regulatory filings pointing to a 40.9kWh battery, up to 225km of electric range and LiDAR-based driver assistance, while Nissan Australia lists it among China-built models under assessment.

Launch groundwork laid without a date

Dongfeng Nissan, Nissan's joint venture in China, announced on Tuesday 20 October that the NX7 hybrid SUV is coming soon, releasing a poster describing it as "a smart, zero-pressure SUV for young people" but without revealing a specific launch date. The announcement is the latest step since the company teased the NX7 and released official images in early August 2026, and follows reporting by CarNewsChina, republished in Thai by car2day on 18 October, that the model was preparing for a fourth-quarter launch in China. The NX7 will be the fourth model in Nissan's N series and the second SUV after the NX8, giving Dongfeng Nissan two offerings each in the NEV sedan and SUV segments. 16

The NX7 appears to be the production version of the Urban SUV PHEV Concept shown at the Beijing motor show in April 2026. CarExpert reported that it made the transition from concept to production with few visual changes, gaining conventional exterior mirrors and door handles while retaining a LiDAR unit above the windscreen and split-level LED daytime running lights that tie it in with newer Nissans such as the Leaf and the facelifted Ariya. 52

Powertrain and battery as filed

Chinese regulatory filings show the NX7 is a plug-in hybrid combining a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with 73kW and a drive motor with peak output of 170kW (228 hp), fed by a 40.9kWh lithium-ion battery supplied by CATL, according to CnEVPost. The filings list an all-electric range of 220km or 225km. The battery is claimed to cover a week of daily driving on a single charge, per Dongfeng Nissan. 1

car2day, citing CarNewsChina, adds further detail from the Chinese market: the 1.5-litre NR15 petrol engine produces 99 hp (about 73kW), the battery is stated at 40.95kWh and produced by the CATL-FAW joint venture, the same supplier that provides batteries to Dongfeng's high-end VOYAH brand. That outlet lists a claimed electric range of up to 225km on the CLTC cycle (around 217km NEDC), fuel economy of 20.74km per litre, three levels of energy-recovery regeneration, 3.3kW vehicle-to-load output, and support for both DC and AC charging. These figures are Chinese-market claims and have not been independently verified. 6

Zecar notes that the up-to-225km figure is measured on China's more generous CLTC test regime, so any eventual WLTP or Australian-certified range could be significantly lower. The NX7 is PHEV-only, whereas the larger NX8 is offered in China with both battery-electric and range-extender powertrains, a split mirroring the N6 PHEV and N7 electric-only sedans. For comparison, the N6 uses much smaller 20.3kWh or 21.1kWh LFP batteries with a 155kW electric motor. 25

Size, technology and positioning

The five-seat NX7 measures 4785mm long, 1920mm to 1932mm wide and 1660mm to 1665mm tall, with a 2815mm wheelbase, per the MIIT-based dimensions reported by CarExpert. That makes it around 95mm longer than Australia's X-Trail on a 110mm longer wheelbase, but smaller than the NX8, which is 4870mm long on a 2917mm wheelbase. car2day lists a kerb weight of 1915kg to 2000kg and wheels ranging from 18-inch with 245/60R18 tyres to 19-inch with 235/55R19. 526

The NX7 has a roof-mounted LiDAR and supports urban NOA (navigate on autopilot), targeting scenarios including stop-and-go traffic, intersections and driving across cities, according to CnEVPost. Dongfeng Nissan has not yet revealed the interior, but CarExpert and zecar suggest the NX8's cabin is a likely guide, with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, dual 15.6-inch displays and a large augmented-reality head-up display. car2day, drawing on Chinese-market reporting, describes Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 and 8755 processors, 256-colour ambient lighting, a 50W wireless charger and Zero Pressure-branded front seats with massage function. 1526

Pricing below the NX8

CnEVPost reports the NX7 is expected to be priced below the NX8, which launched in China on 8 April 2026 with official guide prices of 159,900 yuan to 209,900 yuan, equivalent to about $23,800 at the starting point using the outlet's stated rate of 6.72 yuan to the US dollar, and a starting price of 149,900 yuan under limited-time incentives. No NX7 pricing has been announced. The company has also rolled out an updated N7 sedan on 22 September, with its limited-time starting price lowered to 109,900 yuan. These are Chinese-market list prices and do not represent Australian availability. 1

Australian prospects remain unconfirmed

Nissan Australia has not confirmed the NX7 for local sale, but it sits on a shortlist of China-sourced candidates. In October 2026, Nissan Oceania boss Steve Milette told CarExpert, after the Navara Pro PHEV reveal, that further Chinese-developed models were being assessed: "Today is the first of more to come... We're looking at all of them, and they're all individual business cases. They may not all make it to market, but we are looking at the vast majority of those models to determine whether they fit this market, whether there's a positive business case, and when we can bring them in." 4

The candidates named by both CarExpert and cars24.com.au are the N7 electric sedan, the NX7 and NX8 SUVs, and a production version of the Terrano PHEV concept. The confirmed China-sourced launch so far is the Navara Pro PHEV dual-cab ute, locked in for Australia in 2027 and already spied testing in Melbourne. Both outlets note Nissan's Dongfeng joint venture dates back to 2003, and place the strategy alongside Mazda's 6e and CX-6e from Changan and Ford's Bronco Basecamp and Transit City from JMC. 4352

Any Australian version would require right-hand-drive production and a local business case; zecar notes there is no confirmed Australian launch date or local specification. Until Nissan decides otherwise, the NX7 remains a China-market model, and Chinese-range figures on the CLTC cycle would need re-certification for any local listing. 2
