Freelander 8 makes international five-seat debut with 2027 Australian launch on track

The JLR-Chery joint venture brand has shown its first SUV's international five-seat version in China, while early first-drive impressions of a pre-production plug-in hybrid point to a spacious, well-finished cabin and a few issues the company needs to fix before right-hand-drive markets get the car in 2027.

International five-seat debut and UAE launch timing

The international five-seat version of the Freelander 8 made its first public appearance at the FREELANDER Nightfall event at the Hengli Hotel in Wuhu on 19 October, part of the 2026 Chery International User Summit. Shown alongside the six-seat version, it gives customers a choice of two-row and three-row layouts, according to the company's announcement distributed via GlobeNewswire. 4

At the same event, Freelander confirmed the 8 is expected to launch in the United Arab Emirates in the first quarter of 2027, when the brand says it will share further details on space, safety and service along with specifications and pricing. The company also signed partnership agreements with EK Kanoo Group in Bahrain and Saud Bahwan Group in Oman, extending a regional network that already includes Al Tayer Motors and Premier Motors in the UAE. 4

Freelander also detailed a three-phase international roll-out. Phase one begins in the UAE and expands across the Middle East and international left-hand-drive markets. Phase two enters right-hand-drive markets, prioritising Australia and New Zealand. Phase three covers continental Europe, followed by the United Kingdom and Ireland. 4

A revived nameplate, bigger than a Discovery

The Freelander name returns after a decade away, now attached to a standalone brand jointly developed by Jaguar Land Rover and Chery. JLR owns the name and leads design through a dedicated Freelander Design Hub, while Chery supplies the technology and builds the vehicles at the joint venture's plant in Changshu, China. Chasing Cars reports the model was unveiled in China in April and that Australia and New Zealand are among the brand's first export markets, with the 8 set to become Chery's sixth brand in Australia. 125

The new car bears little resemblance to its ancestor, which was Land Rover's smallest and cheapest model between its 1997 launch and its demise in 2014. At 5118mm long, 2050mm wide and on a 3040mm wheelbase, the Freelander 8 is longer than the seven-seat Land Rover Discovery at 4956mm, and Chasing Cars reports a claimed 2980kg against the Discovery's 2367kg. Autotrader NZ notes it is closer in size to a Discovery than to anything that has previously worn the badge. 25

Design duties were led by Phil Simmons, executive vice-president of the Freelander Design Hub, who worked on the original 1997 Freelander. The company highlighted a Castle-Style Body Design, a Yacht-Style Waistline and an Iconic Triangle Window whose shape holds the letters F and L, echoing the original car's diagonal rear side window split. 24

Powertrains: international plug-in hybrid versus Chinese extended-range EV

The international plug-in hybrid pairs a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor on each axle and all-wheel drive. Freelander claims combined outputs of 460kW and 662Nm, 0-100km/h in 5.8 seconds, and a 34.12kWh lithium iron phosphate battery good for at least 110km of electric range and at least 886km combined on the WLTC cycle. AC charging is up to 11kW, with a claimed 20-80 per cent DC charge in 20 minutes or less. These are manufacturer figures for the international-spec car; CarExpert notes the battery, range and charging figures it lists are for the Middle East model, and Australian specifications are yet to be confirmed. 12

Autotrader NZ adds context to those charging figures, observing that 20 minutes for a 20-80 per cent charge is a long stop for a fairly small battery and that Freelander has not published a peak DC rate. The publication also expects real-world electric range closer to 80km in a vehicle this size, and reports the 8 was designed from the start in left-hand-drive, right-hand-drive and EU versions on one platform. 2

The Chinese-market version is different: an extended-range electric vehicle using a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine purely as a generator. Chasing Cars reports a 60.3kWh lithium battery, 310km of electric range under the CLTC standard, a claimed 610kW and 813Nm combined in China, and an 800-volt electrical system enabling 350kW DC charging. CarExpert reports the EREV is a possibility for Australia, and quotes Freelander's head of brand for Australia and New Zealand, Kym Mellow, saying: "We haven't committed on the model range yet for Australia." 15

Cabin, off-road hardware and early drive impressions

The international range offers five- or six-seat configurations, Nappa leather and Ayous wood veneer, physical shortcut buttons and crystal-style rotary controls, available second-row reclining seats with leg rests and massage, an optional 17.3-inch ceiling-mounted rear entertainment screen, optional Harman Kardon audio with up to 23 speakers and an optional 10-litre refrigerator. Autotrader NZ praises the six-seater's third row, quoting 834mm of legroom and 960mm of headroom, and details a 46.3-inch mini-LED far-side display running on Qualcomm's SA8295P chip alongside a 15.6-inch touchscreen. Level 2+ driver assistance with more than 30 functions is standard. 124

Off-road hardware includes dual-chamber air suspension with continuously controlled damping, up to 266mm of ground clearance, 900mm of wading capability and a nine-mode intelligent all-terrain system. Autotrader NZ reports the suspension can raise the body 70mm or drop it 50mm, the rear wheels steer up to 10 degrees, and the all-terrain system includes a virtual centre diff lock, rear electronic limited-slip diff, crawl control and hill descent control. Freelander's team told the publication the 8 is rated to tow two tonnes, which it flagged as light for a vehicle this size. 12

On the road, CarExpert drove a pre-production plug-in hybrid around a short carpark course in China and came away impressed by the roomy cabin, comfortable seats, smooth power delivery and quiet low-speed running, but noted issues to fix: the central touchscreen reflected sunlight so much it was hard to read at times, the digital speedometer sits off to the left rather than ahead of the driver, and the front corners and wheels were difficult to judge. The publication stressed this was not a road test, that some items including the door handles were not working properly on the pre-production car, and that it hopes the glare will be fixed by launch. 1

Australia: timing, dealers and what remains unconfirmed

The Freelander 8 will lead the brand's Australian launch in 2027, with exact timing and specifications still to be announced, according to Chasing Cars. CarExpert reports Freelander is targeting around 25 Australian dealers for the launch next year, with its own retail network and access to Chery's parts and vehicle distribution infrastructure. Neither the UAE launch materials nor the drive reports include Australian pricing; CarExpert suggests it needs to be priced around $85,000-$90,000 at most to work against established hybrid and plug-in hybrid three-row rivals, but this is the publication's own assessment, not a company figure. 15

Several important details remain open. Australian warranty terms, service intervals and servicing prices have not been announced, Australian equipment is unconfirmed, and CarExpert notes it would expect a five-star safety rating when the car is tested without any rating yet existing; its showroom page for the Freelander 8 likewise carries no expert rating as yet. Chasing Cars cautions that Australian specifications may differ from the Chinese-market car, which carries an equivalent price range of AU$66,570 to AU$85,900 in China, and offers its own speculation of an Australian price around $100,000. Prospective buyers should treat all published figures as applying to the international or Chinese-market cars until Freelander confirms local details. 135
