Back in the Australian wagon market from January 2027

Mercedes-Benz Australia has reopened its wagon account with the third-generation CLA Shooting Brake, available to order now ahead of a January 2027 showroom arrival. According to CarExpert, the nameplate returns after the brand discontinued all of its wagons locally: the first-generation CLA Shooting Brake was sold here, the second generation was skipped, and this third-generation model now brings the badge back alongside the four-door 'coupe' version of the new CLA. 1

Pricing starts at $70,800 before on-road costs for the CLA200 Shooting Brake mild-hybrid, with the electric CLA200 Shooting Brake just $2190 higher at $72,990 plus on-roads, as detailed by CarExpert. That is a modest premium over the equivalent four-door CLA sedan, which CarExpert reported starts at $66,500 before on-roads. cenyavto's report on the Australian announcement likewise lists the same two prices. 13

When the CLA Shooting Brake was last sold locally in 2019, CarExpert noted it carried a price premium of roughly $1500 over the equivalent sedan. In an August 2026 preview, CarExpert estimated a starting price around $70,000 before on-roads based on that history and the current sedan pricing — an estimate the confirmed figure closely matches. 4

The model was flagged for a December 2026 arrival in CarExpert's August coverage of Mercedes-Benz's local model offensive, which described the program as the brand's 'largest product offensive in its history'. The confirmed Australian launch window has since firmed to January 2027. 14

Australian powertrains: mild-hybrid or rear-drive electric

Unlike the four-door CLA range, the Australian Shooting Brake lineup is limited to two front- or rear-drive variants, with no all-wheel drive models offered at launch. CarExpert lists the CLA200 Shooting Brake with a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine and a 48V mild-hybrid system producing 120kW and 250Nm, driving the front wheels through an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic. The mild-hybrid system allows the car to run on pure electric power when required output is below 20kW, and Mercedes-Benz claims fuel economy of 5.4L/100km. 13

The electric CLA200 Shooting Brake uses a single rear-mounted motor producing 165kW and 335Nm through a two-speed automatic transmission, with the second gear engaged at higher speeds to aid efficiency, per CarExpert's specifications. It rides on an 800V electrical system with battery pre-conditioning, and Mercedes-Benz claims 13.2kWh/100km of energy consumption and 511km of driving range on the WLTP cycle. Maximum AC charging is 22kW and maximum DC charging is 320kW. The Australian battery is listed at 58kWh in CarExpert's specification table; no gross-versus-usable split has been published in the available coverage. 13

Practicality and packaging versus the CLA 'coupe'

The Shooting Brake shares the four-door coupe's 4723mm length, 1855mm width and 2790mm wheelbase, but its longer roof and larger rear door openings deliver a more practical cabin. Mercedes-Benz claims an extra 26mm of rear headroom, and cenyavto's report on the Australian announcement adds 14mm of extra front head height and 11mm of additional front legroom compared with the sedan. 13

Boot capacity is 455 litres with the rear seats up and 1290 litres with the 40:20:40-split rear seats folded, while the electric variant adds a 101-litre storage compartment under the bonnet, per CarExpert. A hands-free power tailgate is standard on both variants. For comparison, CarExpert previously reported the four-door CLA sedan manages 405 litres with seats up. 14

Standard equipment, options and warranty

Even the base CLA200 Shooting Brake carries the AMG Line package, with AMG exterior styling, 18-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic glass roof, rear privacy glass, automatic LED headlights and a hands-free power tailgate, as listed by CarExpert. Inside there is a 10.25-inch digital instrument display, a 14.0-inch touchscreen with satellite navigation and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the MBUX Virtual Assistant, wireless phone charging and over-the-air software updates. The electric variant adds an illuminated grille area panel with 142 individually illuminated chrome-look LED stars. 13

Options include the switchable Sky Control panoramic roof at $1600, a Winter Package at $400, a Sport Package at $1200 adding 19-inch AMG light-alloy wheels and high-gloss black accents, and a Premium Package at $2850 bringing Multibeam LED headlights, the MBUX Superscreen with front passenger display, a head-up display, Thermotronic climate control and a Burmester surround sound system. The pricing and package contents are reported by CarExpert and also described in cenyavto's coverage of the Australian announcement. 13

Servicing is covered by prepaid service plans — $3425 over three years for the mild-hybrid and $2455 over three years for the electric, per CarExpert — with 12-month or 25,000km service intervals, a five-year unlimited-kilometre vehicle warranty and five years of roadside assistance. The electric adds an eight-year, 160,000km high-voltage battery warranty. 1

Safety rating and equipment

The five-star ANCAP rating applies to the four-door sedan body style only: CarExpert reports the Mercedes-Benz CLA has a five-star rating from independent safety authority ANCAP based on testing conducted in 2025 on the four-door sedan body style, and neither CarExpert nor Mercedes-Benz has separately stated that the rating extends to the Shooting Brake body. The tested car scored 94 per cent for adult occupant protection, 88 per cent for child occupant protection, 93 per cent for vulnerable road user protection and 85 per cent for safety assist. 1

Standard safety equipment includes adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot assist, driver attention monitoring, lane-keep assist, safe exit warning, a surround-view camera, tyre pressure monitoring and eight airbags including driver's knee and front-centre units, per CarExpert. 1

How the Australian range differs from Europe

The Australian lineup is narrower than the European one. Mercedes-Benz's global announcement of November 2025 launched the electric Shooting Brake in Europe as the CLA 250+ with EQ Technology (200kW, rear-drive, from 57,096 euros in Germany) and the 350 4MATIC (260kW/515Nm, all-wheel drive, from 61,653 euros), both with an 85kWh usable nickel-manganese-cobalt battery, up to 768km of WLTP range for the 250+ and up to 320kW DC charging. These European specifications — including the larger battery, higher outputs and longer range — differ from the Australian CLA200 electric's 58kWh battery, 165kW output and 511km WLTP range, and should not be conflated. 21

Charging performance was central to Mercedes-Benz's European positioning. According to the manufacturer's November 2025 release, the European models can add up to 315km of WLTP range in ten minutes when DC fast charging at 800-volt stations with up to 320kW of charging capacity, and the 350 4MATIC up to 300km in the same time; AC charging of up to 22kW is optional, and an optional DC converter allows use of 400-volt fast-charging infrastructure. The European announcement also quoted combined energy consumption of 14.9–12.7kWh/100km for the CLA 250+ under WLTP, alongside 0g/km CO2 emissions. These figures are specific to the European models and differ from the Australian variant's claims. 2

Mercedes-Benz's global release also confirmed a 48V mild-hybrid Shooting Brake would follow in Europe a few months after the electric launch, with three power levels — consistent with the mild-hybrid variant now confirmed for Australia. In the same release, Mathias Geisen, Member of the Board of Management for Marketing & Sales at Mercedes-Benz Group, said the all-new electric CLA Shooting Brake is 'a true game-changer' that 'delivers sporty performance together with generous space and versatility' — a manufacturer claim rather than an independent assessment. 2

The Shooting Brake sits on Mercedes-Benz's MMA (Mercedes-Benz Modular Architecture), which CarExpert describes as an 'electric-first' platform supporting both battery-electric and 48V mild-hybrid powertrains, and which also underpins the new CLA coupe and the upcoming GLA and GLB SUVs. CarExpert noted the new-generation wagon is Mercedes-Benz's first-ever electric wagon. 4

Where it sits in Mercedes-Benz's local rollout

The CLA Shooting Brake is one piece of a broader Australian product push. CarExpert's August 2026 rundown of the 'largest product offensive in its history' lists the second-generation GLB on the same MMA platform for August/September, the GLC400 electric from October at $112,200 before on-roads, updated S-Class and EQS models in November, and the first-ever electric C-Class and a 500kW AMG CLA45 — also offered in Shooting Brake form with a claimed 670km WLTP range — for the first half of 2027. 4

Buyers who order now can therefore place the wagon within a rapidly expanding Mercedes-Benz EV and hybrid line-up in Australia, with the CLA Shooting Brake's January 2027 arrival following the four-door CLA's local launch. Whether the wagon might later gain all-wheel drive or additional powertrain variants, as offered overseas, has not been announced for Australia. 14
