Mercedes-Benz unveils PLM.AI, targeting a 17-month cut in vehicle development time
Mercedes-Benz has announced an AI-native product lifecycle management platform that the company says will shorten new vehicle development by around 17 months, or up to 30 per cent, backed by an investment of roughly half a billion euros.

What Mercedes-Benz announced
Mercedes-Benz has announced PLM.AI, an AI-native Product Lifecycle Management system it describes as a new digital backbone for global vehicle development. Announced from Stuttgart, the platform connects development, procurement, production, sales and after-sales across the entire product lifecycle, with the aim of bringing new products and technologies to series maturity faster. According to the company's announcement, development time for new vehicles can be reduced by up to 30 per cent, which it equates to around 17 months, with efficiency gains of up to 50 per cent expected in individual engineering processes. 23
AutoTalk Australia reports that the system links development, procurement, production, sales and after-sales data on one platform, and that Mercedes-Benz is spending around half a billion euros on the programme. German outlet auto motor und sport likewise puts the investment at roughly half a billion euros and frames the move as a response to competitive pressure, noting that European manufacturers are being pushed to develop and launch new cars faster as Chinese industry accelerates its own pace. 17
Jörg Burzer, board member for development and procurement and Chief Technology Officer at Mercedes-Benz Group AG, said in the company's announcement: "With PLM.AI, we are creating the digital backbone for the future of product development at Mercedes-Benz and bringing new technologies to series maturity up to 30 percent faster." He added that the company would be "faster, more connected and more capable of learning", and that its high standards for quality and safety remain unchanged. 21
From isolated AI agents to a connected development thread
Artificial intelligence is already embedded in product development at Mercedes-Benz. According to the company's announcement, AI agents currently support tasks including optimising material costs, certification and homologation processes, detecting and resolving faults, and supporting software development, but they operate mainly within individual process steps. PLM.AI is intended to connect those applications across the development process, enabled by standardised data models and end-to-end integration of development data, creating a digital thread in which information is available in real time. 21
Japanese technology outlet Mynavi describes this shift as moving AI use across departmental boundaries: on a shared data foundation, product information can be referenced in real time, allowing AI to be applied across development functions rather than confined to single processes. The company's own announcement frames the change as helping teams make better decisions earlier, by connecting the right people with the right information at the right time, thereby reducing complexity. 62
German IT trade publication automotiveIT places the project within Mercedes-Benz's broader "AI First" strategy, under which artificial intelligence is being anchored along the entire value chain rather than used only for isolated process optimisation. The publication quotes Daniel Eitler, the company's chief AI strategist, saying in an interview with automotiveIT that he wants to prioritise the use cases that create the greatest added value along the value chain. 4
Weight optimisation, simulation and reduced physical testing
Mercedes-Benz cites weight optimisation as a worked example of how PLM.AI changes engineering practice. As the company's announcement explains, changes to individual components affect costs, crash behaviour, hardware and software functions, and production processes. Specialised AI agents will be able to analyse these interdependencies simultaneously, giving development teams an overall picture faster so they can evaluate solutions balancing safety, quality and commercial considerations. 231
AI-powered simulations and development processes are also expected to enable more targeted use of physical testing. According to the manufacturer's announcement, physical testing could be reduced by half over time, allowing more efficient use of resources and earlier validation of development decisions. Mynavi reports the same target, noting that validating designs virtually is intended to cut rework after physical prototyping. The company stresses that humans remain at the centre, with responsibility for product decisions staying with the teams. 26
Mercedes-Benz says the shortened development time does not come from making compromises on quality or safety, a point the company's announcement addresses directly: a Mercedes-Benz developed with PLM.AI will still be "unmistakably a Mercedes-Benz", defined by the same craftsmanship and engineering excellence, simply brought to customers faster. New potential is also expected in after-sales, from linking product, service and operating data. 2
The technology partners and who controls what
Two strategic technology partners are contributing to the programme. According to the manufacturer's announcement, CONTACT Software provides the open PLM core layer through its CONTACT Elements platform, giving Mercedes-Benz a modular and scalable foundation to integrate product data, processes and applications, and to flexibly incorporate future AI technologies. Siemens, a long-standing Mercedes-Benz partner, supports AI-enabled automotive design, simulation and digital validation for the digital twin. 21
Mercedes-Benz itself leads the end-to-end transformation, defining the target vision, target architecture, data models and governance of PLM.AI, and manages global implementation through an agile transformation programme. The company says it will retain full ownership and control of its data and of the AI models developed on that basis. AutomotiveIT and Swiss agency-sourced reporting via Vermögenszentrum both confirm the same division of responsibility, with Mercedes-Benz retaining data sovereignty. 245
Scope and what it means for the product pipeline
PLM.AI is positioned as the cornerstone of Mercedes-Benz's engineering ecosystem, forming the basis for fully integrated, data-driven and AI-supported development across all of the company's vehicle programmes, according to the manufacturer's announcement. AutoTalk Australia likewise reports that the system will be used across all of the company's vehicle programmes. The announcement places the initiative in the context of the brand's biggest product launch programme in its history, in its 140th anniversary year. 21
AutomotiveIT's own analysis suggests the programme's success will ultimately depend on whether the intended connectivity translates into genuinely shorter development cycles and faster innovation processes. Beyond the engineering core, the publication notes that the agentic approach follows a broader industry trend, with BMW also testing autonomous AI agents in business-critical processes such as purchasing, where its "Mr. Flexibility" agent supports capacity and cost decisions. 4
No specific launch timing for individual models developed under PLM.AI, nor a timeline for full global rollout, is given in the company's announcement, which describes the transformation as a continuously developed programme. The manufacturer has not disclosed which vehicle programme will be the first developed end-to-end on the platform. 2
