Geely Q3 2026 results show exports delivering most of the profit as domestic sales struggle

Geely Auto has reported third-quarter revenue of 99 billion yuan with core net profit of 5.21 billion yuan, and its reporting shows exports accounted for roughly 93 per cent of that profit despite making up about 40 per cent of quarterly sales. The figures cover Geely's global operations and are not Australian sales data.

Q3 2026 results and the export profit split

Geely Auto released its third-quarter 2026 financial results on 29 October, reporting total revenue of 99 billion yuan (about 14.8 billion US dollars) and core net profit attributable to the parent company of 5.21 billion yuan (about 777.6 million US dollars), as reported by CarNewsChina. The outlet, drawing on figures reported by CNstock, states that exports alone generated 4.84 billion yuan (about 722.4 million US dollars) of net profit in the quarter — roughly 92.9 per cent of the total. 1

The same CarNewsChina analysis records total Q3 sales volume of 812,500 units, of which 323,700 were exports — approximately 39.8 per cent of sales. On these figures, the more than 60 per cent of sales made in China contributed only about 7 per cent of the company's quarterly profit. These are company financial report figures for Geely's global operations as compiled by the outlet, and they describe vehicle wholesales by the manufacturer, not registrations or deliveries in any specific market, and not Australian sales data. 1

CarNewsChina's framing that car sales in China are 'barely profitable' is its own editorial interpretation of the figures rather than a company statement. The company itself did not, in the material covered here, characterise domestic profitability in those terms. The outlet notes BYD, China's largest new energy vehicle maker, reported Q3 revenue of 221.49 billion yuan, up 13.59 per cent year on year, with net profit of 10.02 billion yuan, up 28.08 per cent, and said overseas sales have become a core growth engine without disclosing export profit contribution. 1

A revised export target and record H1

The export target increase dates to the half-year results. In its own announcement of 17 August, Geely Automobile Holdings reported record H1 2026 revenue of RMB 173.6 billion, up 15 per cent year on year, with core profit attributable to owners of the parent up 46 per cent to RMB 9.68 billion and gross margin at 17.9 per cent. Export volume surged 158 per cent year on year to more than 474,000 units — already ahead of the full-year 2025 export total of 420,000 units — prompting the company to raise its 2026 export target from 640,000 to 920,000 units, with an aspiration of approaching one million. 2

Geely's H1 total sales volume was 1.42 million vehicles, with the China Star series contributing more than 580,000 units, Galaxy nearly 520,000, Zeekr more than 178,000 (about 12.5 per cent of group volume) and Lynk & Co over 144,000, per the company's announcement. Inside China Auto's account of the same results adds that core profit per vehicle rose 45 per cent to RMB 6,806 and the group ended June with a funding reserve of RMB 69.56 billion, close to a historical high. 24

The company attributes its global growth to a partnership-led strategy with Volvo Cars, Proton, Renault Group and Ford across local manufacturing, research and supply chains, and says it has unified engineering teams in Sweden and Germany to shorten product rollout cycles between China and global markets. It operates in 114 overseas markets with more than 2,000 retail and service locations, according to the company statement. 2

NEV exports and localised production underpin the strategy

CarNewsChina reports that new energy vehicles have become the cornerstone of Geely's export strategy, with 484,000 NEVs exported in the first three quarters of 2026 — a 531 per cent surge compared with the previous year. The company's H1 statement similarly describes the Galaxy series, sold nearly 520,000 units strong in the half, as ranking among the world's leading new energy vehicle brands. 12

Geely is also localising production abroad. According to a UNN report citing Bloomberg, the company agreed in July to share capacity and produce vehicles at Ford Motor Co.'s underutilised Valencia plant in Spain, and is set to begin local production of its compact EX5 crossover and subcompact EX2 hatchback — known in China as the Xingyuan — through its joint venture with Renault in Brazil. DBS's results-briefing note records that the Ford cooperation will use Geely's GEA base architecture, with European production serving Europe only. No Australian availability of the EX5, EX2 or Zeekr 9X is established in the material covered here. 53

Monthly data: domestic weakness offset by record exports

CnEVPost, reporting company data released in early September, records August 2026 total sales of 270,194 vehicles, up 8.01 per cent year on year and the highest monthly level of the year. Exports of 110,094 vehicles rose 205.16 per cent year on year to a record for the eighth consecutive month, accounting for 41 per cent of sales, while derived domestic sales of 160,100 vehicles fell about 25.22 per cent, extending a 29.12 per cent July decline. These are manufacturer-reported wholesale/delivery figures, not registrations. 6

For the first eight months of 2026, CnEVPost compiles total sales of 1,943,313 vehicles, up 2.4 per cent year on year, and cumulative exports of 690,985 vehicles, up 170 per cent, already 75 per cent of the revised 920,000-unit target. By brand, Zeekr sales doubled year on year to 251,188 units in the eight months while Lynk & Co fell 15 per cent, and the outlet states plainly that overseas markets have become the company's only growth engine this year. 6

CarNewsChina's Q3 coverage states Geely exported 484,000 NEVs in the first three quarters, but the same article's statement that the company exported 343,700 vehicles in the first nine months does not reconcile with CnEVPost's compiled 690,985 units for the first eight months, nor with the article's own Q3 export figure of 323,700 units; the correct basis for that nine-month figure is unclear from the source, so readers should treat it as uncertain. 16

Analyst view, competition and governance changes

DBS Bank (Hong Kong), in its 18 August results briefing note, judged the revised 920,000-unit export guidance 'overly too conservative' given roughly 580,000 exports in the first seven months, and projected around 1.1 million export units for 2026, about 20 per cent above management's target. DBS attributes the H1 gross margin improvement of 1.5 percentage points to a more favourable sales mix from premium brand Zeekr and exports, and maintained a BUY rating with a target price raised to HKD29. This is an analyst forecast, not a company position. 3

DBS also records Geely's longer-term ambition for two-thirds of sales to come from overseas markets, and a plan to leverage existing capacity within Geely Holding and external partners rather than pursue large-scale greenfield investment. The briefing notes Zeekr's 9X was slated to launch overseas from Q3 2026 with the 8X from Q4, with Zeekr exports expected to exceed 80,000 units in 2026 versus 42,000 in H1, and that Geely will stop developing conventional ICE-only vehicles, migrating China Star to i-HEV hybrid technology with overseas rollout from 2027. 3

Alongside the H1 results, Geely announced a management reshuffle: Li Shufu stepped down as chairman of Geely Auto and became lifetime honorary chairman, remaining chairman of parent Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, with An Conghui assuming the chairmanship, as reported by UNN citing Bloomberg. UNN's account also notes first-half net profit attributable to shareholders fell 1.8 per cent to 9.09 billion yuan even as core profit rose, and that Geely lifted its export target by 23 per cent to 920,000 units. The China Passenger Car Association, cited in the same report, forecasts a 14 per cent domestic decline for all of 2026. 5

On the competitive side, CnEVPost notes Geely still trails BYD by a wide margin overseas, with BYD's overseas sales reaching 1,162,260 units in the first eight months of 2026, up 85.72 per cent, and BYD raising its own 2026 export target to 1.5 million vehicles. UNN's Bloomberg-cited report adds that Geely has been slower than BYD to build an overseas distribution network and is only now catching up, though its premium Zeekr 9X SUV lifted the group's average selling price by 15,000 yuan to 112,000 yuan. 65
