Kia Australia says hybrid Seltos supply will cap its sales ceiling – but a 1000-a-month target is the first step

Kia Australia's local chief says tight global supply will stop the new hybrid-only 2027 Seltos from matching the related Hyundai Kona's sales rate, with the brand initially targeting around 1000 units a month before lobbying for more.

Supply constraints shape Kia's sales expectations

Kia Australia is tempering expectations for its new all-hybrid compact SUV, saying initial supply will be tight because strong overseas demand is soaking up production capacity. Speaking with CarExpert at the Australian media launch of the 2027 Seltos Hybrid range, Kia Australia chief executive Dennis Piccoli said buyers should not expect the model to match the sales rate of the related Hyundai Kona Hybrid, which has been running at roughly 1500–2000 units per month. 1

"There are [supply] restrictions because it has been launched abroad and it has been going really well – so I think there there's capacity constraints clearly," Mr Piccoli told CarExpert. He added that with "a little bit of lobbying and negotiating", 2000 units a month is "a distinct possibility", but that "the first step is to get it to around 1000 [per month] or thereabouts, and then we go from there beyond that." 1

How that target compares with the segment

A 1000-unit monthly target would place the Seltos Hybrid at a similar running rate to the Kona Hybrid itself. CarExpert notes the Kona was last year's top seller in the VFACTS small SUV under $45,000 category with 22,769 registrations, ahead of the Chery Tiggo 4 (20,149) and MG ZS (20,000) – an average of just under 1900 units a month, of which 10,407, or 45.7 per cent, were Kona Hybrid sales. On last year's figures, a 1000-a-month rate would rank the Seltos among Australia's top-selling self-charging hybrid nameplates. 1

The outgoing petrol Seltos has been a mid-pack performer rather than a runaway leader. GoAuto reported in May 2026 that the model had sold 2132 units in the calendar year to date, a 5.1 per cent share placing it eighth in a 24-entrant segment topped by the Chery Tiggo 4 (16.2 per cent), Hyundai Kona (14.7 per cent) and GWM Haval Jolion (13.4 per cent). 3

Pricing, drivetrain and platform details

The new Seltos uses Hyundai Motor Group's K3 compact platform, which it shares with the Kona, Kia K4 and Niro, and the Hyundai i30 Sedan, CarExpert reports. It carries the latest version of Kia's 1.6-litre naturally aspirated petrol-electric hybrid powertrain, which debuts electrified all-wheel drive (e-AWD) for the brand's compact hybrids. Rather than a mechanical setup linking the engine and gearbox to the rear axle, the e-AWD system adds a second electric traction motor on the rear axle. 1

Pricing currently runs from $39,990 drive-away for front-wheel-drive variants, with the e-AWD drivetrain offered exclusively on the top-spec GT-Line at $55,490 drive-away, according to CarExpert. CarExpert lists key rivals as the Kona Hybrid (from $39,990 drive-away), Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid (from $37,440 plus on-road costs), GWM Haval Jolion Hybrid (from $32,990 drive-away), Chery C5 Hybrid (from $31,990 drive-away), MG ZS Hybrid+ (from $29,990 drive-away), Nissan Qashqai e-Power (from $45,850 plus on-road costs) and Jaecoo J5 SHS-H (from $34,990 drive-away). 1

Second-generation package and Australian specification

The second-generation Seltos was revealed globally in December 2025 with a 1.6 hybrid and a 1.6 turbo petrol powertrain, with Kia saying it would launch sequentially from India in the first quarter of 2026, followed by Korea, North America, Europe and China. Korean outlet The Kyunghyang Shinmun reported Kia had raised the model's annual sales target to about 430,000 units, and quoted Kia Customer Experience Division head Ryu Chang-seung describing the hybrid as "a stepping stone toward the era of electric vehicles", with no pure EV Seltos planned for the time being. 4

GoAuto reported in May 2026 that the Australian-market car is hybrid-only, arrives in the fourth quarter of 2026, and brings a localised ride and handling tune, Kia's 'Smart Regenerative Braking System 3.0' and a full ADAS suite that Kia says is likely to achieve "a dual four-to-five star ANCAP rating". The KP3-series car grows 45mm in length (to 4430mm), 30mm in width (to 1830mm) and 60mm in wheelbase (to 2690mm), while roof height drops 30mm to 1600mm. Cargo capacity rises 15 litres to 483 litres, using a space-saver spare wheel in place of the vehicle-to-load technology offered in other markets. 3

GoAuto's report also detailed a redesigned cockpit with dual 12.3-inch instrumentation and infotainment screens, over-the-air software updates, a column-style transmission selector and reclining second-row seats, plus gains in second-row headroom (14mm), legroom (25mm) and shoulder room (25mm front, 12mm rear). It noted the new generation was expected to lift the range's starting price from the outgoing petrol 'S' base of $31,250 before on-road costs, and flagged that the previous GT-Line AWD at $46,670 plus ORCs would likely be axed. As it turned out, the hybrid range CarExpert reports does include all-wheel drive, but only in GT-Line form and at a higher price point, and the hybrid-only positioning was later confirmed by CarExpert's sister coverage stating Kia Australia has "no plans" for cheaper petrol-only versions. 31

The global hybrid push behind the supply squeeze

The capacity pressure Piccoli described is consistent with Kia's global electrification strategy. At its 2026 CEO Investor Day in April, Kia Corporation said it planned to expand its HEV lineup to 13 models by 2030 and lift HEV sales from 690,000 units in 2026 to 1.1 million a year by 2030, while securing an additional 400,000 units of hybrid production capacity over the mid to long term, using plants in Korea, China, India and Mexico as supply hubs. 2

Within that plan, Kia specifically stated the Seltos would target entry-level SUV demand in the US with a hybrid variant launching in 2026, aiming for total Seltos sales of 100,000 units a year, and in emerging markets would target more than 200,000 annual Seltos sales by 2030. Kia President Ho Sung Song also said the Telluride HEV and Seltos HEV launches this year would begin a sequence of additional hybrid models. That multi-market demand for the same powertrain underpins the constrained initial supply Kia Australia is reporting. 2

CarExpert's first Australian drive review of the Seltos Hybrid is scheduled for publication on Friday, November 6, so independent local driving impressions are not yet available. 1
