MG holds off on confirming timing for U9 plug-in hybrid ute in Australia

MG Motor Australia says a plug-in hybrid version of the U9 dual-cab remains under consideration, but the brand has stopped short of reaffirming the mid-2027 launch target announced a year earlier, according to a report by Cenyavto.

Timing left open at U9 EV media presentation

MG Motor Australia has declined to reaffirm a launch date for a plug-in hybrid version of its U9 dual-cab ute, despite previously signalling a mid-2027 arrival. According to a report published by Cenyavto on 26 October 2026, MG's Australian arm indicated at the local media presentation of the electric MG U9 EV that the plug-in hybrid version was still being evaluated as a prospective addition to the range, but the company was not prepared to state exact timing, while noting the Australian market remains an area of priority attention for the brand. The mid-2027 figure was a stated plan rather than a confirmed launch commitment, and the global availability of a PHEV U9 does not establish Australian specifications or timing. 1

Cenyavto's account of the same presentation adds that journalists again asked about hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions at the U9 EV event, but the previously stated mid-2027 schedule was not directly reaffirmed, leaving the project in progress without a date. 1

The mid-2027 plan and where it came from

The earlier timing came from MG's previous Australian leadership. In October 2025, then MG Motor Australia boss Peter Ciao told CarExpert: "We already have the plan. Middle of 2027 is our plan", when asked about a U9 PHEV to take on the BYD Shark 6, GWM Cannon Alpha and Ford Ranger PHEV. Ciao said at the time that a PHEV U9 would form part of MG's Australian product strategy as the federal New Vehicle Efficiency Standard progressively tightened CO2 limits on brand line-ups. 2

Ciao also framed the PHEV as a way of balancing emissions performance across the range. "Each model has different CO2 credits, but I have a whole range that I can balance", he told CarExpert, adding: "We will develop PHEV to catch up and let customers make the decision in the future, whether it's PHEV or diesel." In August 2025, MG had announced an investment that CarExpert reported as ¥10 million (A$2.13 billion) to launch 13 new models globally, including EVs, PHEVs and extended-range electric vehicles, within two years. 2

The change in tone under newer leadership is notable. According to Cenyavto's report, product direction chief Man Chen said plug-in hybrid technology has particular value in the current transition period, allowing part of the audience to move away from internal-combustion vehicles without immediately switching to fully electric transport, especially for drivers not yet ready for a full EV or unable to choose one for practical reasons. He also suggested electrification is an established trend in the passenger segment but is only gaining momentum in the commercial class. 1

A crowded plug-in hybrid ute segment

A PHEV U9 would enter a competitive field. Cenyavto's report lists the BYD Shark 6, Ford Ranger PHEV and GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV as established rivals, with a future Chery Stockman also on the horizon. CarExpert reported in October 2025 that the U9 would be one of several Chinese utes available with PHEV power by 2027, noting the JAC T9 PHEV was due in early 2026 with a turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine and two electric motors producing a combined 385kW/1000Nm — figures it contrasted with the then-existing PHEV dual-cabs: Ford Ranger PHEV 207kW/697Nm, GWM Cannon Alpha 300kW/750Nm and BYD Shark 6 321kW/650Nm. 12

Emissions regulation is part of the competitive backdrop. CarExpert reported that Ford has not confirmed whether the 2.0-litre Bi-Turbo diesel engine in the Ranger and Everest — introduced in 2018 — will be axed in 2026, given its CO2 emissions do not meet NVES limits, with the Ranger XLT dual-cab Bi-Turbo emitting 189g/km against 66g/km for the Ranger PHEV. 2

Where a PHEV would sit in the U9 range

The U9 arrived in Australia in September 2025 with a 2.5-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine, eight-speed automatic and four-wheel drive, launched shortly after its closely related SAIC sibling, the LDV Terron 9. A plug-in hybrid would occupy a position between the diesel and the electric U9 EV, combining a petrol engine, electric motors and a traction battery — a layout Cenyavto's report describes as well suited to short daily trips on electric drive while retaining conventional range and versatility for longer journeys. 12

The electric flagship has already been detailed for Australia. According to Autotalk, Australia will be the first market to launch the U9 EV, a dual-motor all-wheel-drive model producing 325kW and 700Nm from a 102.2kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, with 430km of WLTP range, a 3.5-tonne braked towing capacity, a 685kg payload and a claimed 0–100km/h time of 5.8 seconds. Autotalk reports the U9 EV supports DC charging at up to 115kW, with a 20 to 80 per cent recharge taking approximately 42 minutes, up to 11kW AC charging, and vehicle-to-load output of up to 6.6kW through the external CCS2 port plus three 2.2kW outlets inside the cabin. The model has also received a five-star ANCAP safety rating, per Autotalk. 5

CarExpert's news listings show the U9 EV is priced at $78,990 before on-road costs in a single, highly specified dual-motor all-wheel-drive variant, arriving later in the year, while noting MG Motor Australia has yet to announce detailed local launch timing — a point Autotalk also made at the vehicle's detail stage. 35

The broader segment context is challenging for electrified utes. CarExpert reports electric models account for less than one per cent of Australian ute sales, though MG believes its U9 EV dual-cab can attract more buyers, and the brand says it is confident Australia's charging network can support long-distance towing — while not revealing the U9 EV's range under load. 34

What is confirmed and what remains uncertain

The confirmed position as of late October 2026 is that the U9 PHEV remains under consideration and that MG will not confirm a date, according to Cenyavto's report of the U9 EV media presentation. The mid-2027 figure stands as a previously announced plan that has not been reaffirmed, not as a cancelled project. No Australian specifications, pricing or order details for a PHEV U9 have been stated, and the existence of a PHEV U9 globally does not by itself establish what an Australian-market version would offer. 12

Buyers watching this segment should treat the PHEV as a tentative prospect rather than a scheduled launch. What is on firmer ground is the direction of the wider line-up: the diesel U9 is on sale, the U9 EV is priced at $78,990 before on-road costs per CarExpert and launching in Australia first according to Autotalk, and MG's own commentary — as reported by Cenyavto — acknowledges electrified technologies will play an increasingly visible role in light commercial vehicles, even as the mass transition in that class is only beginning. 153
