Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid: capable all-wheel-drive small SUV, but the fuel-economy gains are modest
Overseas road tests of the series-parallel Crosstrek Hybrid broadly praise its mechanical all-wheel drive, ground clearance and refinement, yet repeatedly find its efficiency gains trail stronger hybrid rivals — a pattern Australian buyers of the electrified Crosstrek should weigh against its price premium.

A capable hybrid that is not a fuel-economy leader
The Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid is the electrified version of Subaru's small all-wheel-drive crossover, and the overseas road-testing record paints a consistent picture of what it is and is not. It offers genuine all-weather and light off-road ability, and The Drive calls it the smoothest, quickest and quietest offering in the US line-up. It is not a fuel-economy benchmark: Car and Driver's verdict states the hybrid powertrain delivers limited efficiency gains and that the car is not as thrifty as competitors, while the magazine's own testing showed the hybrid managing 35 mpg on its 75-mph highway run — 1 mpg behind the standard non-hybrid Crosstrek in the same test. 526
AutoTrader.ca's Canadian review of the e-Boxer Hybrid Limited was similarly blunt about economy. Jeff Wilson's testing over several hundred kilometres of mixed winter driving never showed better than the low-8s in L/100 km against an official 6.5 L/100 km combined rating, and he scored fuel economy 6.5 out of 10. For context, he cited a recent test of the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid — also on winter tyres — that averaged 5.6 L/100 km. He attributed part of the penalty to the Crosstrek's full-time all-wheel-drive system, versus the Toyota's front-drive default with an auxiliary rear electric motor. 4
Powertrain and specification: mechanical AWD as the differentiator
The Crosstrek Hybrid uses a series-parallel hybrid system pairing a revised 2.5-litre SUBARU BOXER engine with dual electric motors and a lithium-ion battery, delivering a combined 194 horsepower, according to Subaru's US product information. Subaru claims up to 38 per cent better city fuel economy than conventional models and up to 597 miles per tank, with no need to plug in. These figures come from Subaru of America and apply to the United States line-up. 1
Wired, which drove a US-market example on a brand-hosted test in Oregon and Washington, argues the car's defining advantage is that Subaru retains a mechanical all-wheel-drive system rather than substituting a rear electric motor. In the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid, Wired notes, the rear motor can shut down to prevent overheating in mud or sand, precisely when traction is needed. Wired also highlights that the hybrid keeps the standard car's large fuel tank and its 8.7 inches of ground clearance, which it describes as more than virtually any other hybrid competitor. 3
The powertrain replaces the petrol car's continuously variable transmission. Car and Driver's specification sheet for the US Limited Hybrid lists an Atkinson-cycle 2.5-litre flat-four with two AC motors, and its testers recorded a 0-60 mph time of 7.7 seconds — slightly quicker than the non-hybrid — while finding that the hybrid's extra weight negates the 14-horsepower advantage at higher speeds, with the engine droning under heavy throttle. 52
Interior, equipment and infotainment
Equipment is generous for the class on US models: a standard 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster, a standard 11.6-inch multimedia touchscreen with wireless Apple Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, standard wireless device charging, and available perforated StarTex upholstery, according to Subaru's US product page. Hybrid-exclusive 18-inch alloy wheels and raised roof rails are also standard, and dual-function X-MODE with Hill Descent Control is standard across all US trims. 1
The multimedia system, however, is a recurring criticism. The Drive's US review by Joel Feder called it the maker's previous-generation unit, sluggish in operation, with Apple CarPlay sometimes taking minutes to engage after start-up. AutoTrader.ca similarly observed the interface was slow to start up and respond to inputs, and Car and Driver describes the Starlink system as utilitarian and seriously laggy at times. Wired's criticism is slightly different: it says too many functions are accessible only through the centre touchscreen, a particular problem when changing climate settings on a rough trail. Buyers should treat this as a known weak point across the model range. 6453
EyeSight driver-assistance technology is standard on the US range, including automatic pre-collision braking and advanced adaptive cruise control with lane centring per Subaru's US material, and blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert is standard on all US trims. Some safety features are trim-gated, however: Subaru's US page lists Reverse Automatic Braking and the 360-degree Surround View Monitor as Limited Hybrid features, and the DriverFocus distraction mitigation system as standard only on the Limited Hybrid. AutoTrader.ca's Canadian test praised the underlying safety hardware but found the driver attention warning and lane departure systems overzealous in their alerting. 14
Practicality, dimensions and the cargo-space trade-off
The hybrid layout costs some cargo space. Car and Driver cites 19 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 51 cubic feet with them folded in the US Limited Hybrid, down from 20 and 55 cubic feet in the non-hybrid because the battery sits under the rear cargo area. The Drive measured 18.6 cubic feet in the US Sport Hybrid, 1.3 cubic feet less than the petrol car for the same reason. AutoTrader.ca lists 564 litres seats-up and 1,549 litres folded for the Canadian Limited. 5264
For the US-market Limited Hybrid, Car and Driver records a wheelbase of 105.1 inches, length of 176.4 inches, width of 70.9 inches and height of 63.0 inches, with a curb weight of 3697 pounds. These are US-specification figures for that grade; Australian buyers should confirm local Hybrid S dimensions with Subaru Australia rather than assuming parity. 25
Elsewhere, the ownership picture is largely positive. AutoTrader.ca rated the Canadian car's driving feel 8.0 out of 10, noting that engineers retuned the suspension to manage a roughly 155-kilogram weight gain and that braking remained smooth despite regenerative blending. The Drive called the hybrid the smoothest, quickest and quietest offering in the US line-up, with instant electric torque making it feel peppy despite the roughly 330-pound penalty. 46
Price, variants and what Australian buyers should weigh
Pricing documented in the sources is for overseas markets and should not be read as Australian pricing. In the United States, The Drive tested a 2026 Sport Hybrid at $35,415 including destination — a $3,370 premium over a comparable non-hybrid Sport — and judged the premium worthwhile for the added refinement and real-world efficiency gains. Wired lists the US Sport Hybrid at $33,995 and the Limited Hybrid at $36,415, noting that both prices include the $1,420 delivery fee, that the Limited premium over its internal-combustion counterpart is only $2,000, and that the hybrids are built in Japan rather than at Subaru's Indiana plant. 63
In Canada, AutoTrader.ca tested the single e-Boxer Hybrid Limited at a pre-tax price of $42,890 including freight, exactly $10,000 above the entry Convenience trim and $2,500 above the petrol Limited — and it concluded the premium was not justified by the efficiency gains it observed. Car and Driver lists US MSRP of $35,445-$36,445 for the 2026 model and $35,470-$37,470 for the carryover 2027, noting the introduced-for-2026 model continues unchanged. Local Australian pricing, grades and the on-sale timing of the Hybrid S are not documented in these sources. 452
Taken together, the verified record supports this assessment of the review signal: the Crosstrek Hybrid is a genuinely capable, well-equipped small SUV whose electrification brings measurable refinement, low-speed response and claimed range of up to 597 miles per tank, but its efficiency improvement is modest by hybrid-SUV standards and its infotainment draws repeated criticism. Buyers prioritising fuel economy may find stronger-hybrid rivals more compelling; those who value mechanical all-wheel drive, ground clearance and a conventional Subaru experience have a distinctive option. 134652
