2027 BMW 3 Series revealed: Neue Klasse styling and new tech on familiar CLAR underpinnings

The facelifted BMW 3 Series has been unveiled with a completely new look that draws heavily on the brand's Neue Klasse electric models, and CarExpert reports production will commence in Bavaria imminently ahead of first Australian deliveries in 2027. Despite looking like an all-new mid-size luxury sedan resembling the electric i3, the 'new' 3 Series remains an evolution of the current model on BMW's Cluster Architecture (CLAR) platform, launching with an exclusively petrol-powered engine range in which every engine uses 48-volt mild-hybrid technology. ¹

BMW's own media material, as reported by BMWBLOG, frames the G50 as the most significant styling departure from one 3 Series generation to the next, with virtually nothing carrying over from the G20 it replaces. The publication notes the 3 Series is BMW's most important nameplate, with more than 18 million sold since the original E21 arrived in 1975, and that buyers could easily mistake it for the electric i3 even though the two sit on fundamentally different underpinnings. ²

Powertrains: petrol mild-hybrids now, a plug-in hybrid to come

Leading the launch range is the M350 xDrive, the performance flagship of the core 3 Series line until a new-generation M3 arrives. CarExpert reports it uses a 3.0-litre turbocharged petrol inline six with 48V assistance producing 326kW and 580Nm, sent through an eight-speed Steptronic automatic and BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive, with a claimed 0-100km/h time of 4.1 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 250km/h. BMW has confirmed a Drift Moment function that can send power to the rear wheels only, a feature previously reserved for M models, and WLTP figures are listed at 8.2-7.5L/100km and 187-171g/km depending on specification. ¹

BMW says a plug-in hybrid version will join the lineup over the coming year, according to CarExpert. BMWBLOG adds that the diesel is gone from the range and that, until the plug-in hybrid arrives in 2027, the initial lineup is limited to four- and six-cylinder petrol engines, with the publication stating no manual transmission is likely to be offered anywhere in the lineup. ¹²

For European launch markets, CarExpert reports the 318 and 320 join the M350 at launch, each using a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder with 48V mild-hybrid assistance. The 318 makes 115kW/250Nm with a claimed 0-100km/h time of 9.5 seconds in rear-drive form, while the 320 ups outputs to 155kW/330Nm with a 7.4-second claim. BMWBLOG's figures for the same two cars, expressed in horsepower for other markets, list the 318 at 154hp and the 320 at 208hp with an optional xDrive on the 320, while in the United States the range starts with the 330 and 330 xDrive at 255hp. ¹²

On the performance flagship's specification, BMWBLOG reports the B58 inline six has not been detuned for European emissions compliance as was the case with the outgoing M340i, and that a pure rear-wheel-drive mode will be added via an over-the-air update next year. That publication also says the next M3 is reportedly due in 2028 with a mild-hybrid S58 engine, which remains unconfirmed by BMW. ²

Design: i3 cues inside and out, on different bones

Externally, the new 3 Series closely mirrors the Neue Klasse i3. CarExpert describes a slim take on BMW's kidney grille feeding into twin headlight clusters that merge into a full-width design cue, an upright rear fascia with slim LED tail-lights bleeding into the rear quarter panels, and M Yellow Lights on the M Performance version. The publication notes the G50 is marginally larger than its G20 predecessor in every dimension, measuring 4675mm long and 1850mm wide on a 2860mm wheelbase, and is 5mm longer, 15mm narrower and 37mm shorter in the wheelbase than its electric i3 sibling. ¹

BMW has not adopted the dedicated Neue Klasse platform for the combustion car. Jalopnik, in its March 2026 report on the i3 reveal, confirmed the petrol 3 Series would instead ride on a new version of the current model's CLAR platform with largely the same styling but more traditional proportions, and that its model code would be G50 while the electric i3 is NA0. ⁴

According to BMWBLOG, flush pop-out door handles mirror the i3, wheel sizes start at 18 inches and rise to 20 inches, quad exhaust tips are standard on the M350 xDrive while four-cylinder models tuck their exhausts under the bumper, and the boot holds 450 litres, 30 litres more than the i3. The publication also reports nine metallic launch colours including Sapphire Black, M Brooklyn Grey, Eucalyptus Green and M Le Castellet Blue, with Alpine White as the base solid and a matte Frozen Space Silver available from March 2027. ²

Interior and technology from the Neue Klasse playbook

Inside, the combustion 3 Series takes on the i3's Neue Klasse cabin. CarExpert reports a 17.9-inch central touchscreen, a futuristic 3D head-up display and BMW's Panoramic iDrive experience running on Operating System X, a software architecture based on the Android Open Source Project that BMW says allows excellent update and upgrade capabilities. The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant features Amazon Alexa+ AI integration, and a Level 2 Motorway Assistant enables supervised hands-free driving at up to 130km/h in 21 selected countries where legislation allows, with navigation-guided partially automated driving in urban areas promised from 2027. ¹

In a hands-on look at an M350 xDrive prototype, BMWBLOG describes the dashboard layout as appearing lifted straight from the electric sedan, with the Panoramic Vision windshield projection spanning nearly pillar to pillar, three fixed tiles effectively replacing the digital instrument cluster, and the iDrive rotary knob consigned to history. That publication, which sat in the prototype itself, notes the new 3 Series will not get a front passenger screen, which BMW reserves for its larger models. ³

BMWBLOG also notes the CLAR platform's consequences in the cabin: an evident transmission tunnel hump remains in the rear footwell, unlike the i3's completely flat floor. Production and what it means for Australia

CarExpert reports production of the G50 3 Series is due to commence this year at Plant Dingolfing in Lower Bavaria, BMW Group's largest European manufacturing facility, supported by components from Group Plant Steyr in Austria, with high-voltage batteries for the electrified 3 Series range supplied by the new Irlbach-Straßkirchen plant. BMWBLOG places the production start at Dingolfing in November 2026, with the Munich plant left to assemble the electric i3. ¹²
