Nissan adds cheaper front-drive E-Power X-Trails and first Australian Rock Creek

E-Power goes front-drive and cheaper

Nissan Australia has doubled its X-Trail E-Power line-up from three grades to six by adding front-wheel-drive versions of the ST-L, Ti and Ti-L, cutting the entry price of the medium SUV's hybrid range by $3090 to $45,990 plus on-road costs. GoAuto reports the expansion was announced as the X-Trail nameplate marks its 25th year in Australia, with Nissan Oceania managing director Steve Milette telling the publication he expects hybrid variants to draw level with petrol in the sales mix and overtake petrol "over the next few quarters". Milette said petrol had accounted for about two-thirds of X-Trail sales until now, partly influenced by fleet demand. ¹²

CarExpert notes Nissan introduced E-Power to the X-Trail, its best-selling model, in 2022, but until now the electrified powertrain had been offered only with all-wheel drive. In a statement, Milette said expanding E-Power to front-wheel drive "opens the technology to more buyers at a more accessible price", adding that hybrid had become the powertrain of choice in the medium SUV segment and that a 2WD E-Power X-Trail put Nissan "exactly where the strongest demand is". ⁴

Cars24 reports order books for the new 2WD hybrids and the Rock Creek grade opened at announcement, with first Australian customer deliveries scheduled from September 2026. The addition of the four variants and the Rock Creek brings the X-Trail range to 13 grades spanning petrol and hybrid powertrains. ³

The pricing move positions the new hybrid entry point against key medium SUV rivals. According to GoAuto, the new entry-level X-Trail E-Power is priced identically to a Toyota RAV4 GX 2WD; the Ti is $1925 dearer than a RAV4 GXL 2WD, while the Ti-L sits $2275 below a RAV4 Cruiser 2WD. GoAuto also lists Hyundai's front-drive Tucson hybrid from $42,850 plus on-road costs, the Kia Sportage S FWD petrol-electric at $44,450 plus on-road costs, and Honda's CR-V e:HEV X front-driver at $49,900 driveaway. Cars24 separately lists the new grades at $50,915 for the Ti 2WD E-Power and $54,715 for the Ti-L 2WD E-Power, all before on-road costs. ¹²³

What the 2WD E-Power changes technically

Like the all-wheel-drive E-4orce variants, the new front-drive versions use a 1.5-litre petrol engine purely as a generator, with the front wheels driven exclusively by a 150kW electric motor, 7kW down on AWD variants and with no published torque figure. GoAuto reports combined-cycle fuel consumption is rated at 5.4L/100km, which Nissan said is about 11.5 per cent more efficient than an AWD E-Power, with CO2 emissions of 123g/km. Cars24 lists the AWD E-Power at 6.1L/100km and 139g/km, whereas CarExpert cites 6.4L/100km as the prior claimed combined figure; the 2WD ratings of 5.4L/100km and 123g/km are consistent across all three outlets. CarExpert adds the lower CO2 figure provides a modest benefit under Australia's New Vehicle Efficiency Standard, introduced in 2025. ¹²³⁴

Performance and capability trade-offs accompany the price cuts. Nissan Oceania X-Trail senior product marketing manager Aleks Pecanac told GoAuto that front-drive E-Power variants would take "between 7.5 to 8.0 seconds" to sprint from 0-100km/h, compared with seven seconds for the AWD equivalent. Braked towing capacity falls by 1000kg to 650kg, which Pecanac said was in line with some two-wheel drive rivals, and the front-drive Ti-L E-Power rides on 19-inch alloy wheels rather than the 20-inch items on its AWD equivalent. All front-drive E-Power variants are five-seaters, and hybrid packaging eliminates the seven-seat layout entirely. ¹²

Rock Creek arrives as a petrol-only flagship

Australia's first X-Trail Rock Creek is a new adventure-styled petrol grade priced at $48,315 plus on-road costs, carrying a $2435 premium over the seven-seat 2.5-litre petrol ST-L AWD on which it is based. GoAuto reports the grade inherits a 10.8-inch head-up display and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster from the Ti grade, and confirms there is no E-Power version of the Rock Creek for Australia, unlike New Zealand. CarExpert notes the Rock Creek is the first Nissan model to wear the nameplate locally, following X-Trail Rock Creek versions in Japan and the US (badged Rogue there) and the larger Pathfinder. ¹²⁴

In a statement to CarExpert, Milette said "the new Nissan X-Trail Rock Creek answers a clear call from buyers who want their compact family SUV to look and feel ready for the weekend", describing it as pairing "genuine, rugged attitude with seven-seat practicality". Exterior changes include a black grille with a three-slot horizontal treatment inspired by the early D21 and current D27 Navara utes, black roof rails, gloss-black door mirrors, a unique front lower bumper, and 18-inch alloy wheels with orange accents matching the front and rear badging. ¹²⁴

Inside, ballistic nylon-trimmed seats carry embroidered Rock Creek badging, with orange contrast stitching across the seats and dashboard trim and an orange accent on the steering wheel's Nissan badge. A new $1495 Baja Storm paint finish paired with a black roof is exclusive to the grade, with Ceramic Grey carrying the same premium and Everest White at $500. CarExpert adds that Australian buyers miss out on the all-terrain tyres fitted to the US-market Rogue Rock Creek, with local specification instead closely matching the Japanese-market version, and that the Rock Creek retains the ST-L's equipment list, which already includes 10-way power-adjustable heated front seats, dual-zone climate control and an Around View Monitor following an update earlier in 2026. ¹²⁴

Power comes from an unchanged 2.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine producing 135kW and 244Nm, paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission and all-wheel drive, with combined fuel consumption of 7.4L/100km, according to CarExpert. Pecanac told GoAuto the Rock Creek was not intended as a dedicated off-roader: "It's more of a lifestyle vehicle that's ready for weekend activities, including whether it's mountain biking or hiking or something similar." ⁴¹²

Market context and ownership terms

The expansion lands in Australia's fastest-growing vehicle category. GoAuto reports VFACTS delivery data, supplemented by Electric Vehicle Council figures for Tesla and Polestar, shows the medium SUV segment growing 24.9 per cent to 370,870 units in the 12 months to August 31, with up to 40 brands competing. Chinese brands accounted for 32.1 per cent of medium SUV sales in the first seven months of 2026, peaking at 37.6 per cent in June. Pecanac told GoAuto that half of all hybrid buyers in the segment choose two-wheel drive variants and that hybrids now account for 51 per cent of all medium SUV sales in Australia. ¹²

GoAuto reports that in the first seven months of 2026 the X-Trail ranked 10th in the medium SUV segment with 8189 sales, down 15.1 per cent year on year, while the Toyota RAV4 was second with 21,115 (down 25.8 per cent) behind the Tesla Model Y, up 105.8 per cent to 22,611 units, or 25,040 units and 127.9 per cent including the three-row Model Y L. The X-Trail nameplate's historical weight is substantial: Nissan says VFACTS figures show 338,508 sold across four generations since the first Australian arrival in October 2001, with the T32 generation accounting for 145,405 sales between 2014 and 2022 and the current T33 at 54,252 units since its 2023 arrival. GoAuto notes the current generation runs its course in summer 2027-28. ¹²

Ownership terms carry across the range. Cars24 reports every 2026 X-Trail includes Nissan MORE 10-year/300,000km service-activated warranty, up to 10 years of roadside assistance when serviced at authorised Nissan dealers, and flat-price servicing of $399 per visit for the first five years. GoAuto matches these terms, adding that all list prices exclude on-road costs. ³¹²
