Interim results from a 12-month real-world fleet

BMW Group and its project partners have reported the first interim results from their HVO test and demonstration fleet, a 12-month real-world trial involving more than 600 BMW and MINI vehicles with highly efficient diesel engines. According to the company's announcement, over 5,500 refuelling events were recorded across the fleet during the period, with the type of fuel dispensed detected in each case, and HVO was verifiably used in more than 80 per cent of refuelling events. Around 235,000 litres of the renewable diesel were dispensed over the trial. 12

The results are self-described as interim, and they come from a fleet operated and documented by BMW itself. The company's announcement presents the trial as proof of technical feasibility for a proposed vehicle category rather than as the launch of any consumer product, and it does not establish wider availability of the technology or independently verified emissions savings. Automotive World covered the announcement on 28 October 2026 under the headline 'BMW HVO fleet logs renewable diesel in over 80% of fills'. 24

How the fuel-tracking technology works

At the core of the trialled technology is fuel verification. Data on the refuelling process captured from the vehicle is cross-referenced with data from the fleet operator's payment systems and, for part of the fleet, additionally with service-station data from Bosch's Digital Fuel Twin. According to BMW, this allows fuel type to be tracked seamlessly through multiple digital channels, so it can be established which fuel each vehicle has actually taken on. 12

Dr Martin Kaufmann, Senior Vice President Powertrain Development at BMW Group, said in the company's announcement that the team documented more than 5,500 refuelling events with an HVO usage rate exceeding 80 per cent 'without any hardware modifications to the vehicles and without new infrastructure at the gas stations'. He described the technical feasibility of a 'VEEF-only' fleet as proven and characterised the results as a signal to policymakers to promote technology openness, particularly in Europe. 12

Fleet scope and rollout history

The test and demonstration fleet was launched in October 2025 at the Fleet Europe Days trade show in Luxembourg, according to BMW's release. Since then the vehicles have been used in the corporate fleets of BMW Group, Bosch in Germany, Eni in Italy and Repsol in Spain, with all refuelling transactions and fuel-type data documented centrally by BMW Group. The stated goal is to give operators of vehicles with modern internal combustion engines a decarbonisation pathway alongside electrification, using renewable fuels. 12

The trial took advantage of growing HVO availability in Europe. BMW states that as of October 2026 the fuel is available at 6,130 service stations, a figure drawn from the hvo100map.com tracking source, which includes more than 1,700 Enilive stations across Europe. BMW has also been filling all diesel models produced in Germany with unblended HVO before delivery to dealers since January 2025, using Neste MY Renewable Diesel at its Dingolfing, Regensburg and Leipzig plants. The Finnish manufacturer's fuel is claimed by BMW and Neste to enable a well-to-wheel CO2e reduction of up to 90 per cent compared with fossil diesel, a manufacturer-stated figure rather than an independently verified result. 12

The proposed VEEF category and fuel certifications

VEEF stands for 'Vehicles Exclusively running on Eligible Fuels', a proposed vehicle category the trial technology is designed to support. BMW has long certified its vehicles for a range of renewable fuels: HVO to EN 15940, plus B10 and eFuels to EN 590 for diesel engines, and E20/25 and eFuels to EN 228 for petrol engines, according to the company's release. 12

BMW also welcomed the political initiative to approve E20 petrol across Europe, which it regards as a key factor in raising the renewable component of petrol for both the current vehicle fleet and a future VEEF fleet. Per the BMW FAQ cited in the release, current BMW models are approved for E20 operation depending on model, beginning from 2014. Since July 2026, BMW Group, Toyota Motor Europe, Repsol and Bosch have also been running a Spanish pilot testing exclusive use of the 'Nexa 95' petrol in around 20 BMW, MINI and Toyota petrol vehicles in the Greater Madrid area, with the same aim of gapless fuel-type verification. 123

Broader renewable-fuel supply context

The announcement situates the trial within a wider European supply debate. In March 2026, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, the German Biomass Research Center (DBFZ), FREYBERGER engineering GmbH and BMW AG presented a study titled 'From raw material to fossil free mobility: Europe's potential for a renewable fuel market'. Its management summary, quoted in BMW's release, argues the transport sector's shift away from petroleum cannot be achieved through powertrain electrification alone and that liquid fuels integrable into existing supply infrastructure without technical modifications are a key focus. The study analyses feedstock availability, fuel conversion and EU road-transport fuel demand for the target years 2030, 2035 and 2040. 12

For readers in Australia, the announcement is a European programme: the fleet operated in Germany, Italy and Spain, the interim findings relate to European fuel availability, and BMW's release contains no Australian availability, rollout or fuel-supply commitments. Any future applicability of the VEEF concept or its underlying technology to the Australian market would require separate, documented evidence. 12
