Reveal and Australian launch timing

BMW unveiled the i3 in Munich as the first battery-electric version of its eighth-generation 3 Series sedan, carrying forward the i3 name from the 2013 carbon-fibre city car and, more immediately, from the China-only electric 3 Series of the outgoing generation. GoAuto, reporting from Munich, described the March 2026 event as a 'design reveal', with some technical specification still to be finalised, and noted production starts with the BEV in August 2026, ahead of petrol versions. 1

The car is built on BMW's Neue Klasse architecture, which it shares mechanically with the iX3 SUV, while the upcoming petrol 3 Series, known as 'G50', sits on an updated version of the older CLAR platform. CarExpert reports production of the i3 begins in Munich in August 2026 and that BMW will switch its primary Bavarian plant to exclusively building Neue Klasse-based EVs in 2027. 13

For Australia, BMW has settled on a first-quarter 2027 launch. GoAuto reports BMW Australia will launch the electric i3 and the revised petrol 3 Series side by side locally in that quarter, and 7NEWS similarly states the new BMW i3 is set to launch in Australia in the first quarter of 2027. 42

Powertrain, battery and range claims

At the March reveal, BMW detailed a single launch variant, the i3 50 xDrive, with dual motors producing 345kW and 645Nm in an all-wheel-drive layout with a rear-motor bias. GoAuto reported an expected 108kWh usable nickel manganese cobalt battery promising around 900km on the WLTP estimate, while CarExpert stressed that BMW had not yet specified battery capacity or chemistry for the i3 and that BMW described the range figure as provisional. 13

With Australian specifications confirmed, BMW's published figures for the local launch cars are: the i3 50 xDrive uses a 108.7kWh battery for up to 912km of claimed WLTP range, a claimed 0-100km/h time of 4.7 seconds and a 200km/h top speed; the i3 40 xDrive uses an 82.8kWh battery for a claimed WLTP range of 566-710km, 275kW/520Nm and a claimed 0-100km/h time of 5.4 seconds. These figures were reported by 7NEWS, whose motoring coverage was supplied by CarExpert. 2

Even the provisional 900km claim at reveal represented a large step up for BMW in Australia. CarExpert noted it would exceed the Tesla Model 3 Long Range RWD at 750km WLTP and BMW's own i4 Gran Coupe at up to 613km, and that the sedan's sleeker shape delivers about 95km more claimed range than the mechanically similar iX3 50 xDrive SUV. 3

Charging and Neue Klasse technology

The i3's 800-volt electrical architecture allows DC charging at up to 400kW, which BMW says can add up to 400km of range in a claimed 10 minutes, and the sedan charges at up to 22kW on AC power, with 22kW AC charging listed as standard for both Australian grades. CarExpert also reports bidirectional capability with vehicle-to-load, vehicle-to-home and vehicle-to-grid functions, with BMW Australia yet to announce local details, saying they would come in due course. 34

The battery pack uses cylindrical round cells rather than the prismatic cells of previous-generation BMW EVs, and the Neue Klasse platform brings a non-modular cell-to-pack construction that GoAuto reports increases torsional rigidity, with the pack also forming part of the vehicle's underbody sealing. The i3 uses a zonal electrical architecture with four high-performance computers, which GoAuto reports reduces cabling distance and cost and increases compute power substantially; CarExpert identifies BMW's 'Heart of Joy' computer for driving dynamics, claimed to respond ten times faster than previous systems. 13

Driver-assistance technology is branded 'Symbiotic Drive' and delivers Level 2 autonomous driving in which systems do not disengage when the driver intervenes. BMW claims its more advanced computing means fewer unnecessary interventions from the semi-autonomous safety systems and from traction and stability control, with the system tracking the driver's eyes to determine intent, as reported by GoAuto. 13

Design, dimensions and cabin

The i3 is marginally larger than the outgoing G20 3 Series, measuring 4760mm long (+47mm), 1865mm wide (+38mm) and 1480mm high (+40mm) on a 2897mm wheelbase (+46mm), figures reported by both GoAuto and CarExpert. Styling follows the Neue Klasse language established by the iX3 and the 2023 Vision Neue Klasse concept, though CarExpert notes the illuminated slatted grille of the show car made way for a more conventional illuminated double-kidney design, and GoAuto sees hints of the 1990s E36 generation in the silhouette. 13

Inside, the cabin mirrors the iX3 with a 17.9-inch 'Free Cut' touchscreen, an optional head-up display and the pillar-to-pillar 'Panoramic Vision' display running across the base of the windscreen, all running BMW's Operating System X. GoAuto reports recycled fabrics as standard upholstery in Europe with Veganza artificial leather optional and genuine leather retained for top M Sport versions, while CarExpert adds that Econeer recyclable textile is standard and lists available interior colours including Adelaide Grey and Agave Green. 13

Suspension comprises two-joint spring strut front and five-link rear layouts, with passive dual-valve dampers standard at reveal and adaptive dampers available with the M Sport package; wheel sizes top out at 21 inches. BMW showed the i3 in M Sport form with 21-inch M 1067 M aerodynamic wheels in new Le Castellet Blue metallic paint, and eleven exterior colours are available at launch, as reported by CarExpert. 13

Australian pricing, grades and market context

BMW Australia has priced the i3 in two grades: the i3 40 xDrive from $96,900 plus on-road costs and the i3 50 xDrive from $112,900 plus on-roads, figures reported by both 7NEWS and GoAuto in their September 2026 pricing coverage. Both grades come with the Iconic Glow exterior package, M Sport package, adaptive M suspension, M Sport brakes in metallic dark blue and 19-inch M aerodynamic wheels standard, and an M Sport Pro package is optioned for $4200, adding red or blue M Sport brakes, black mirror caps and a black rear spoiler. 24

GoAuto frames the pricing as a deliberate move into more premium territory than the i4 Gran Coupe the i3 indirectly replaces, which opened at around $89,000. It notes BMW had previously positioned the i4 below the Luxury Car Tax threshold to qualify for the federal Fringe Benefits Tax exemption, with i4 sales rising from 353 units in 2023 to 2062 in 2024, and observes that with the 2026-27 LCT threshold at $91,661, neither i3 grade will repeat that formula. That is GoAuto's analysis of the sales conditions, not a BMW statement. 4

GoAuto also points to a contracting premium medium sedan segment: sales of the outgoing 'G20' 3 Series fell from 3147 in 2023 to 2472 in 2024 and 1877 in 2025, with Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Audi A5 volumes also down and Tesla Model 3 interest off its peaks. To the end of August 2026, BMW had delivered 1051 3 Series and 603 i4 units in Australia, which the publication says the rejuvenated badge will aim to build on. 4

All four launch variants go on sale together in the first quarter of 2027: the petrol 320 at $83,900 plus on-roads (a reduction of $12,400 against the outgoing 330i), the M350 xDrive at $128,900 plus on-roads, and the two i3 grades. GoAuto notes both i3 grades are dual-motor all-wheel drive, with a rear-drive i3 missing at this point, and reports additional grades, including an i3 M60 xDrive flagship and an expected i3 30 rear-driver, will come online later, with an electric M3 and a new 3 Series Touring also set to be revealed. GoAuto specifies the i3 is built exclusively for now at BMW's Plant Munich, with the petrol 3 Series at Dingolfing. 4
