BYD Shark 6 Performance: 350kW plug-in hybrid flagship takes on the Ford Ranger Raptor

The new top-spec Shark 6 pairs a 2.0-litre turbo with reworked electric motors for 350kW, unlocks 3500kg braked towing and adds a crawl mode — and early testing suggests it is even quicker than BYD claims.

What BYD has launched

BYD has expanded the Shark 6 line-up from a single specification to three, adding a base Dynamic Cab-Chassis and a new Performance flagship aimed squarely at the Ford Ranger Raptor. The Performance swaps the standard 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine for a 2.0-litre turbo unit and gains an uprated front electric motor, producing a combined 350kW and 700Nm under the Dual Mode Off-Road (DMO) all-wheel-drive architecture. BYD Australia chief operating officer Stephen Collins said the expansion gives customers "more choice without compromise — whether it's a Super Hybrid that is a capable workhorse, a family all-rounder, or made for serious towing and performance," as reported by Man of Many. 37

The Performance is the only Shark 6 variant with a 3500kg braked towing capacity — a 1000kg increase over the rest of the range, which is limited to 2500kg even on the new Dynamic Cab-Chassis. That brings the plug-in hybrid into line with the mainstream dual-cab segment. The new Cab-Chassis is designed for commercial applications and went on sale first, while Performance buyers could register interest ahead of the model's May 2026 arrival in Australia, Man of Many reported. 37

Powertrain and performance claims

On its own, the new 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder produces 180kW and 380Nm — 45kW and 120Nm more than the 1.5-litre unit it replaces — while the front electric motor rises to 200kW and 360Nm, a gain of 30kW and 50Nm, according to CarExpert NZ's review. Combined output is 350kW and 700Nm. BYD claims 0-100km/h in 5.5 seconds, which is quicker than the 5.8-second figure Man of Many cites for the Ranger Raptor, and quotes fuel use of 1.3L/100km on the WLTP combined cycle when the battery state of charge is above 25 per cent. 137

The 29.6kWh blade battery is unchanged, with BYD claiming an 80km electric range and 640km of combined range for the Performance. CarExpert NZ noted that on paper the Performance is only two-tenths of a second quicker to 100km/h than the 1.5-litre variants, but its testers found it materially quicker in practice: the outlet recorded five seconds flat in its own testing, half a second under BYD's claim, making it — barring the pure-electric Geely Riddara RD6 and the V8-powered Ram 1500 TRX — the quickest dual-cab on sale in New Zealand in that outlet's assessment. 1

Chassis, crawl mode and off-road limits

Alongside the extra power, BYD has addressed one of the standard Shark 6's known weaknesses with a new crawl mode, called Leopard Mode in New Zealand and simply Crawl Mode in Australia. The system acts as a substitute for a mechanical four-low range: when activated it limits the vehicle to 20km/h and continuously adjusts torque to keep the wheels moving without slipping, according to details reported by Man of Many. It is standard on the Performance from launch and will be offered to existing Premium and Dynamic owners via an over-the-air update. 137

CarExpert NZ's week with the Performance found the new mode a genuine step up from the standard car on tricky gravel and climbs, tackling inclines its predecessor would likely have struggled with. The outlet still stopped short of calling it a confident off-roader, noting it lacks the articulation for some steeper terrain and has no locking differentials. Greek outlet GO CAR reported that BYD Australia's leadership has an open channel with R&D in China and, through the company's close relationship with local accessory maker Ironman 4x4, has discussed the possibility of an off-road upgrade kit for the Shark 6. 16

Pricing and equipment

In Australia, the Shark 6 Performance starts at $62,990 before on-road costs, per Man of Many's launch coverage, with the Dynamic Cab-Chassis from $55,900 and the Premium from $57,900 — all list prices excluding on-roads. In New Zealand, CarExpert NZ lists the Performance at $78,990 before on-road costs, positioned $7000 above the standard Premium there, and notes it undercuts the Ford Ranger Wildtrak Hybrid ($85,990) and Toyota Hilux BEV SR ($81,990) in that market, while sitting well below the $98,490 Ranger Raptor. The two figures reflect different markets and should not be read as a discrepancy. 137

Equipment changes beyond the powertrain are modest. CarExpert NZ found the Performance looks identical to a standard Premium, gaining only a six-way power front passenger seat, an NFC card and the crawl mode. The refreshed Shark 6 cabin nevertheless brings a column-mounted gear stalk replacing the centre console selector, a simplified console layout, a new two-spoke steering wheel and a permanently landscape-oriented touchscreen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 360-degree camera, dual-zone climate control and a 15.6-inch touchscreen carry over, though CarExpert NZ experienced intermittent failures of CarPlay to reconnect automatically. 1

How it stacks up

The Performance has quickly reshuffled international rankings. South African outlet CAR magazine lists the 350kW Shark 6 Performance — introduced there in July 2026 — as the most powerful bakkie on sale in the country, ahead of the Geely Riddara RD6 4WD Apex (315kW) and the 292kW Ranger Raptor. AutoTrader South Africa's ranking of the fastest bakkies places it second for acceleration at a claimed 5.5 seconds, behind only the RD6 Horizon Pro's 4.5 seconds and ahead of the Raptor's 5.8 seconds. 45

The competitive context matters in Australia too. Seven West Media's motoring coverage notes the Ranger remains the country's top-selling vehicle, outselling the Shark 6 by more than 3500 units in September 2026, with the Performance flagship listed at $62,900 plus on-road costs in its comparison of dual-cab rivals against the $75,090 Ranger V6 Wildtrak. Against thePerformance's own benchmark, CarExpert NZ's verdict was that the new flagship largely does what it sets out to do — a genuinely impressive straight-line performer, a refined daily cruiser and strong value — even with its gravel shortcomings, earning a "Very Good" rating from the outlet. 12
