Geely reported to bring Emgrand sedan to Australia within a year, as confirmed Emgrand L EM-i plans take shape

A report by drive.com.au says Geely will launch its Emgrand sedan in Australia within the next 12 months, backing a bet on a passenger-car segment most rivals have abandoned. The timing fits the already confirmed Emgrand L EM-i plug-in hybrid due in the first half of 2027, though pricing and local specifications remain unconfirmed.

Report points to an Emgrand arrival inside 12 months

Geely will bring its Emgrand sedan to the Australian market within the next 12 months, according to a report by drive.com.au, which says the company believes it can carve out a market where brands including Ford, Mitsubishi and Nissan have failed. The report positions the Emgrand as a small sedan set to compete against the Toyota Corolla, Mazda 3 and Kia K4, in a segment that once also included the Ford Focus, Mitsubishi Lancer and Nissan Pulsar before SUV and crossover growth eroded its volumes. 1

The timing reported by drive.com.au is consistent with what Geely Auto Australia has already confirmed publicly: the Emgrand L EM-i plug-in hybrid sedan is scheduled to arrive in Australia during the first half of 2027, which falls within that 12-month window. What the latest report adds is a framing of the car as a small sedan pitched against compact rivals, whereas Geely's own confirmation describes the Emgrand L EM-i as entering the mid-size sedan segment. Australian pricing, full specifications and an exact on-sale date have not been announced. 123

What has been confirmed about the Emgrand L EM-i

Geely Auto Australia has confirmed the Emgrand L EM-i as one of three electrified models launching locally in 2027, previewed at Sydney's Everything Electric Show from September 18 to 20. As reported by Autotalk and GoAuto, the sedan and the Monjaro EM-i SUV are both due in the first half of 2027, with the Battleship 700 off-road SUV to follow in the second half. Full specifications, pricing and exact launch dates will be announced closer to each arrival. 23

On confirmed preliminary specifications, the Australian Emgrand L EM-i will use an 18.4kWh battery and offer more than 80km of claimed WLTP electric range, with a combined petrol-electric range exceeding 1000km, according to GoAuto. Geely says the powertrain will produce more than 180kW and more than 250Nm. The system is related to the EM-i drivetrain already used in the Australian Starray EM-i, which pairs a 1.5-litre petrol engine with electric drive and prioritises the electric motor for propulsion across much of its operating range. 32

The Emgrand L EM-i measures approximately 4806mm long, 1886mm wide and 1490mm high on a 2756mm wheelband — making it marginally smaller overall than a Toyota Camry but larger than most conventional small sedans, per GoAuto's reporting. Overseas specifications quote luggage capacity of 609 litres. Five exterior colours will be offered, with black and brown upholstery available on the higher trim level, according to Autotalk. GoAuto, which has sampled an overseas-market Emgrand, found a comfortable ride, generous rear-seat accommodation and a relatively plush interior. 32

Pricing, rivals and the sedan gamble

Australian specification and pricing for the Emgrand L EM-i remain unconfirmed. GoAuto has previously indicated the sedan could occupy territory around the $35,000 mark if Geely maintains its aggressive local pricing strategy, though that figure is the publication's own expectation rather than an announced price. The car is expected to target models including the BYD Seal 6 and Toyota Camry, according to GoAuto, while drive.com.au frames the Emgrand against compact rivals such as the Corolla, Mazda 3 and Kia K4 — a difference in segment framing between the two reports that reflects the car's size sitting between the two classes. 31

Geely's local managing director Alex Gu has argued the sedan segment's decline reflects a lack of supply rather than a lack of demand. Speaking with Australian media in Hangzhou, China, as reported by CarExpert, Gu said: "not only do customers don't like sedans, today you see the lack of supply of more advanced, more [high-tech] sedans in the market", adding that Geely would be interested to bring a sedan to market to see the feedback. He told GoAuto there remained opportunities among both private and fleet buyers for more technologically focused sedans. 53

The Emgrand name represents a return rather than a debut in Australia. The brand previously sold the budget-priced MK sedan and hatch through Western Australian distributor John Hughes in the early 2010s before fading from the market, so the Emgrand L EM-i will be the first sedan sold by the reborn, factory-backed operation that relaunched in March 2025, per GoAuto. 34

A wider rollout beyond the sedan

The Emgrand is part of a larger program. GoAuto reports Geely Auto Australia has confirmed three of six models planned for 2027 — the Monjaro EM-i, Emgrand L EM-i and Battleship 700 — with three further arrivals yet to be detailed. The brand's local director of product planning and marketing, Andrew Tuitahi, later told Australian media, as reported by GoAuto, that five or six cars were coming over the next 12 months and that "a couple of cars" would arrive between the first-half 2027 launches and the Battleship 700 in the second half. He also flagged potential gaps in small SUVs, larger SUVs and utes. 36

Geely's rollout has been deliberately paced. Tuitahi described it to GoAuto as "a curated pace", saying the company was prioritising so each product had market space and dealers had time to learn the cars. The brand launched in its current form in March 2025, has since introduced the EX5 electric SUV, Starray EM-i plug-in hybrid SUV and EX2 electric hatch, passed 20,000 cumulative local deliveries, and grown its dealer network from 22 at launch to more than 100, with plans to reach about 130 dealerships within three to six months. 63

Buyers who place a $200 holding deposit on the Monjaro EM-i or Emgrand L EM-i by September 30 are being offered a complimentary home charger and premium paint upgrade, according to Autotalk, with Monjaro EM-i all-wheel-drive orders also receiving a complimentary suede-style upholstery upgrade. Terms and conditions apply. That offer accompanied the Everything Electric Show preview, ahead of final Australian pricing and specifications being announced closer to launch. 2
