Japanese SDx platform committee targets implementable vehicle-software base within two years

The JASA-led SDx Platform Committee, headed by eSOL chief executive Masaki Gondo, is pressing for a software-led, cross-industry development ecosystem, arguing Japanese manufacturing has only a five-to-six-year window to build its own platform before dependence on overseas vendors deepens.

A two-year deadline for a software-led base

Japan's embedded-systems industry body JASA (the Embedded Systems Technology Association) is campaigning for a software-led overhaul of manufacturing through its SDx Platform Committee, chaired by association director Masaki Gondo, who is also president, CEO and CTO of embedded-software company eSOL. In an interview published by Response.jp on 28 October 2026, Gondo states the committee aims to build its transformation base within two years, running implementation and verification in parallel rather than spending years on discussion first. The SDx Platform (SDx standing for Software Defined x) is described as a proposal and roadmap, not a completed standard or production system. 13

The urgency is framed as a countdown. Gondo told Response.jp that looking at other countries' strategies and speed, he estimates the grace period at roughly five to six years rather than ten, meaning a technology development base must be readied in the next two to three years. The committee is committing risk money to that timeline, and Gondo argues that if the two-year platform-build target is achieved, the industry can succeed. 13

Where current development falls short

The core problem identified in the interview is the disconnection between domains. In the software-defined vehicle era, concurrent development across mechanical, electrical and computing (software) domains is called for, but Gondo says current CAE, MBD and ECU software development are not linked. Integrated environments using AI and simulation exist, he says, but they are not connected at the runtime level, and software-led architecture design has not yet permeated the industry. Until those linkages exist, the problem that software development cannot begin until hardware is fixed remains unresolved. 13

Gondo also argues that the industry structure itself slows software-centred decisions. Existing SDV standardisation efforts and consortia led by manufacturers tend to lean hardware-first, he says, because the embedded-systems and electrical-components industry sits downstream of the makers as a supplier tier. The committee deliberately prioritises software-vendor-led initiatives, on the argument that horsepower and fuel economy are no longer the competitive axis; high-quality hardware is described as merely the starting line, with market value determined by the services and application value layered on top. 13

Structure, membership and the open-ecosystem aim

The committee grew out of a JASA reform project and a report published in November 2025, titled Software-Driven Social Transformation and Japan's Competitive Strategy (commonly the JASA Report), authored principally by Gondo and others. That report analysed dependence on overseas platforms and argued that building a Japan-originated, horizontally integrated platform was urgent; the SDx Platform Committee was created in response, according to the Response.jp interview. 13

The committee's roster extends beyond embedded-systems vendors to include OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers. Gondo says member companies are not merely drafting reports: they share the crisis assessment and take responsibility for budgets and deliverables. Recruitment relied on engaging board and department-head level contacts who understand the technology, so a top-down commitment could cascade to engineering teams. He adds that OEMs and Tier 1s are now joining with software engineers treated as equal partners, something he calls unthinkable in the past. 13

On the deliverable itself, Gondo told Response.jp the target is not a single standard. Standards assembled by reconciling specific companies' technologies risk becoming unusable compromises or documents that capture only a concept layer. Instead the committee wants a vendor-neutral ecosystem in which implementations and components are contributed openly, and the industry adopts what it judges good. He describes this as a Plan B that keeps meaning even if a single large player's integrated platform approach — his Plan A — succeeds. 13

Beyond cars, and beyond SDV

Although the platform work starts with the automotive industry, the committee frames it as cross-industry. The 'x' in SDx signals that the effort is not limited to software-defined vehicles: as physical AI reaches robots, machine tools, cars and appliances, SDV techniques are expected to apply to heavy machinery, ships, rail, drones and other mobility, as well as robotics, medicine and agriculture. Gondo says continuous recycling of data into digitally executed manufacturing is what raises product value, and that architecture design must be software-led from the outset. 13

The committee's argument aligns with the wider industry debate over who owns the platform layer. At CES 2024, Hyundai Motor Group announced its own 'Software-defined Everything' (SDx) strategy, beginning with a software-defined vehicle that decouples hardware from software to enable independent updates, extending to software-defined fleets and an eventual transport-as-a-service concept. Hyundai's approach is a single group's proprietary ecosystem; the JASA initiative is positioned as an alternative open option for OEMs and suppliers that do not sit inside such an economy. 2

The software-side view of the same shift was also aired in Japan earlier in 2026. At eSOL's private Technology Forum in Tokyo on 17 July 2026, themed around mastering AI with the SDx platform, eSOL CEO Masaki Gondo argued that SDx sits in the trough of disillusionment on the hype cycle and should enter the slope of enlightenment within about three years, with the platform — the controller of the data that makes AI useful — as the bridge. Panasonic Automotive Systems CTO Masashige Mizuyama told the same forum that VirtIO, which Panasonic open-sourced in 2018 and standardised with industry endorsement in February 2026, is already shipping in the new Mazda CX-5, an example of software defining hardware specification in practice. 56

EdgeTech+2026 as the showcase

The committee's next public milestone is EdgeTech+2026, JASA's embedded and edge technology exhibition, running 18–20 November 2026 at Pacifico Yokohama's exhibition hall and annex hall, with free online registration for the three-day event. Within it, the Automotive Software Expo's SDx Conference on 19 November carries keynote and panel contributions from Nagoya University, Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) Automotive Division Mobility DX Office, Mazda, eSOL, Panasonic Automotive Systems and Aisin. Gondo delivers a keynote from 14:05 on 19 November; Mazda executive officer Michihiro Imada, Panasonic Automotive principal expert Yiku Yamamuro and Aisin principal engineer Mitsunori Nakane are among the listed speakers. 134

Gondo frames the event as a test of substance over slideware. He told Response.jp that outputs and proofs of concept must demonstrate something actually working, because showing engineers functioning systems is the most persuasive material available. The committee's message, in his words, is that mechanical, electrical and software specialists should combine under a software-defined axis from the architecture-design stage onward. Readers should treat the platform's final shape, membership commitments and two-year outcome as forecasts from the committee rather than settled facts. 13
