Stefanovic returns with petrol-station video

Former Today host Karl Stefanovic used a social-media video posted on Wednesday, September 23, to announce his return to Australia and question fuel prices. Nine reported that the approximately minute-long clip appeared on Instagram after Stefanovic spent an extended period in the United Kingdom. The Daily Mail also reported the video and described his return to his YouTube series after a three-week absence. ¹²

Filmed outside a petrol station, the video combined Stefanovic’s complaint about fuel costs with criticism of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s overseas discussion of artificial-intelligence guidelines. Stefanovic asked followers to send him the fuel prices they were encountering, according to Nine. His remarks were an appeal for information from viewers, not a published survey of prices. ¹²

What the video establishes about prices

Stefanovic suggested diesel was costing $3 a litre at the station. Nine identified it as a BP site but said the prices on its sign appeared blacked out in the footage. The Daily Mail likewise reported his remark about a station without visible prices. Neither account establishes the price being charged at that forecourt, so his $3 figure should not be treated as a verified pump reading. ¹²

Nine separately said petrol was expected to exceed $2.50 a litre and diesel $3 a litre in Australia. Those figures were presented as expectations, not measured prices at the station in Stefanovic’s video. Nine did not attach a location, date or forecasting method to those expectations in its report. ¹

Fuel prices were already a podcast subject

The September video was not Stefanovic’s first recent discussion of fuel costs. A March 10 listing for The Karl Stefanovic Show describes an interview with ANU national security expert David Leaney about fuel prices and supply security. The episode description raises questions about the relationship between oil purchase costs and bowser prices, but its assertions about reserves, shortages and price gouging are claims made in the show’s promotional description, not independently established figures. ⁵
