Mazda begins Google Gemini rollout for the all-new CX-5 in Europe, Japan and North America

What Mazda has announced

Mazda announced on 27 October 2026 that the Google built-in functionality fitted to the all-new CX-5 in the United States, Canada, Europe and Japan has begun supporting Google's Gemini AI assistant. Japanese outlet Response reported the announcement, noting that the update is distributed free of charge through Google Play, after which owners can operate a subset of vehicle functions and retrieve information hands-free simply by speaking as they would in an ordinary conversation. ³⁴⁹

Mazda's own European press releases, dated 26 October from Leverkusen and Waddinxveen, confirm that Gemini is available immediately for CX-5 vehicles with Google built-in in all supported European markets and languages. Once the user enables it, Gemini takes over from Google Assistant as the active voice assistant. ⁶⁷

Automotive World reported the European rollout as an over-the-air update spanning navigation, messaging, entertainment and selected vehicle controls, replacing Google Assistant for owners who opt in. The reporting does not establish Australian availability for the update. ¹

What Gemini does differently

The defining change is conversational interaction. Because Gemini interprets natural language, context and follow-up questions, drivers no longer need to memorise fixed voice commands, as Response and MotorFan both explain in their coverage of the Japanese-market announcement. A driver can ask for a well-reviewed café with outdoor seating along the route and then refine the request through follow-up questions, and can obtain real-time traffic information and arrival times simply by asking. ³⁴⁵

Vehicle settings are also handled conversationally. Mazda's examples include telling Gemini that the cabin is cold and the windscreen is fogged, prompting an adjustment to the climate control, or, in the German-market release, issuing combined commands such as setting the temperature to 21 degrees while switching on the driver's seat heating. Entertainment requests extend beyond naming a track: drivers can ask for music to suit a mood or activity, question the playing song, or resume an audiobook where they left off. ³⁶⁵

With Google built-in, Gemini can summarise and read incoming messages aloud, and draft, refine or translate replies without the driver touching the phone, as Mazda's UK and German releases describe. Messaging services such as WhatsApp and Messenger can also be used hands-free through Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, noting that an Android phone with an active data plan is required for that route. ⁸⁶

A free-form Gemini Live mode, available in beta, is also part of the rollout. Response reports that it supports open-ended conversation during a drive, with Mazda citing uses such as planning a family trip or rehearsing a work conversation. ³⁴

Activation, languages and data terms

To activate Gemini in place of Google Assistant, owners must be signed into their Google Account and opt in, per Mazda's UK release. Full functionality requires a data connection, although selected capabilities remain available offline. Automotive World's own analysis observed that adding a headline feature to a volume model after delivery shows how central over-the-air software has become, even for an automaker relying on Google for the assistant itself. UK market context and pricing

Motoring Research reported the Gemini rollout for UK-market CX-5s with built-in Google software across supported European markets and languages, and stated that prices are unchanged with the addition of Gemini, with the entry-level Prime Line model costing from £31,550 in the UK. It also noted that all versions of the new CX-5 are equipped with a 2.5-litre e-Skyactiv G petrol engine with Mazda M Hybrid technology, and that the third-generation car dropped Mazda's traditional rotary controller in favour of voice commands and a touchscreen. These are UK-market figures and specifications, not Australian ones. ²

Motoring Research adds historical context: Mazda announced earlier in 2026 that it had sold five million examples of the CX-5, including about 105,000 in the UK, making it the brand's most successful model.
