A sharp spike in EV enquiries

MG Motor Australia says interest in its electric vehicles has surged dramatically since fuel prices climbed during the Iran conflict. Marketing director for Australia and New Zealand Dimitri Andreatidis told GoAuto that enquiries across the brand's EV range had jumped 220 per cent month on month, with best-selling models approaching 300 per cent. He added that MG is preparing to launch several new EVs over the coming months aimed at a fresh cohort of electric buyers. 1

Speaking at the Sydney media launch of the MG4 EV Urban, Mr Andreatidis told GoAuto the dynamics of EV buying had changed, with customers who were not previously considering an EV now open to the idea. He noted that website traffic, the proportion of customers showing EV interest and time spent engaging with electric models had all increased, and said MG would continue to tune its strategy and customer experience as it absorbed the shifting demand. 1

The same quote from Mr Andreatidis about a 220 per cent month-on-month jump in enquiries, with best sellers near 300 per cent, was also carried by DMARGE, which separately interviewed MG's head of product Meng Chen. Mr Chen told DMARGE some customers now report estimated weekly running-cost savings of up to 88 per cent compared with similar-size petrol vehicles, with the highest benefits when charging is combined with solar and home batteries. 3

A wider electric line-up for Australian buyers

GoAuto reports that MG's current battery-electric line-up in Australia consists of the MG4 EV Urban hatchback, introduced shortly before the surge was reported, the MGS5 small SUV, the Cyberster two-seat sports car, and the premium IM5 sedan and IM6 SUV from the SAIC-backed IM sub-brand. Runout stock of the original MG4 remains available while a facelifted version is expected, and an electric version of the U9 dual-cab ute has been approved for local sale, joining the diesel U9 launched last year. 1

Pricing is a central part of the expanded offer. GoAuto reported in March 2026 that the MG4 EV Urban was priced for Australia from $31,990 drive-away, while Emu Money likewise cited the new MG 4 Urban starting from $31,990 in its analysis of Australia's cheapening EV market. Emu Money noted more than a dozen EVs are now available under $45,000, with the entry point to the market pushed below $24,000 by the BYD Atto 1. 15

Despite the EV push, Mr Andreatidis told GoAuto that MG is not abandoning internal combustion. He said customers requiring a diesel U9 still exist, particularly in parts of Australia without the charging infrastructure to support an electric alternative, and that MG offers everything from internal combustion engines and hybrids to EVs to cater for all requirements. 1

The broader market shift behind MG's numbers

MG's experience reflects wider movement in the Australian market. VFACTS February data, as reported by DMARGE, showed EV sales jumped 95.9 per cent year on year to claim 11.8 per cent of the new-car market, up from 8.4 per cent in January and 5.9 per cent in February 2025. Carsales reported a 76.7 per cent spike in EV searches after the conflict broke out, and a Primara Research survey found 25 per cent of Australians are considering buying an EV for the first time, up from seven per cent before the conflict. 3

Emu Money reports that EV searches on carsales almost tripled from February to March, the sharpest spike the marketplace has recorded, with searches up 76.7 per cent in the first week of March alone. Pickles tracked a 111 per cent increase in EV searches over the same period, CommBank reported new battery-electric vehicle loans up 161.5 per cent in March versus February weekly averages, and lifetime EV consideration rose to 55 per cent, up 19 percentage points since November 2025. 5

By May the momentum had grown further. Marketing-Interactive reports VFACTS data showing battery-electric vehicles reached a record 20 per cent share of new-vehicle sales in May, with electrified vehicles including hybrids and plug-in hybrids accounting for around 46 per cent of all sales. Overall new-vehicle sales fell 4.8 per cent to 100,206 units in the month, though electrified brands continued to gain ground, with BYD up 155 per cent to become the second-largest brand on 8,211 sales. MG remained in the top 10 with 3,872 sales and a 3.9 per cent market share, according to ContentGrip's reporting of the May VFACTS figures. 42

From value brand to full EV portfolio

MG has a mixed recent electric sales history to build on. GoAuto notes that last year MG's best-selling electric car in Australia was the MG4 hatchback with 2986 examples sold, though this marked a steep decline from the previous year, when 6934 found Australian homes. The brand has since added the MG4 EV Urban at a sharper entry price and layered in the MGS5 SUV and Cyberster sports car alongside the IM5 and IM6. 1

On the marketing front, ContentGrip reports MG launched a national "Thinking EV? Think MG" campaign, created by Elevencom, spanning TV, outdoor, cinema, radio and digital, and highlighting the MG4 EV, MG4 EV Urban, MGS5 EV, MGS6 EV and Cyberster. Mr Andreatidis positioned the campaign as a reflection of a maturing category, with an emphasis on accessibility and choice, in a market where Kia, BYD, Chery, Polestar and Zeekr are all pushing harder into EVs. 2

MG's premium IM sub-brand is also being pushed hard. Marketing-Interactive reports that MG launched the "Refined Intensity" campaign for IM, spotlighting the IM5 sedan and IM6 mid-sized SUV, with the campaign running nationally across BVOD, SVOD, digital out-of-home, Spotify, paid social, paid search and PR until 5 July 2026. Mr Andreatidis called it a significant milestone in the local evolution of IM, while MG product marketing manager Garth Dawson described IM as "somewhat of an undiscovered gem in Australia" and the campaign as one of the most ambitious the company has launched here. 4
