MGU9 EV priced at $78,990 for Australia, first global market from Q4 2026

Pricing and launch confirmation

MG Motor Australia has confirmed Australian pricing for its first fully electric ute, the MGU9 EV, at $78,990 plus on-road costs, with first arrivals scheduled from the fourth quarter of 2026. 4X4 Australia reported the confirmation, quoting Dimitri Andreatidis, Marketing Director at MG Motor Australia: "At $78,990 plus on-road costs, we believe the MGU9 EV offers a compelling combination of capability, performance and technology, and we're excited that Australia will be the first market globally to be able to get behind the wheel." ³⁴⁵

Zecar and CarSauce reported the same pricing and timing: CarSauce lists the announcement as covering the "2027" MGU9 EV at $78,990 before on-road costs, while zecar frames the price as an MSRP with the ute starting to arrive in Australia from the fourth quarter of 2026. Zecar adds that buyers can register their interest through MG's website. The model-year labelling differs between outlets, but all three agree on the price, the dual-cab body style and Australia's first-market status. ⁴⁵

Andreatidis told CarSauce the Australian ute market is an important one, with customers increasingly looking at different powertrain options, saying: "A full-electric ute offers another choice and, importantly, allows Australians to make the move to electric without giving up the versatility they value in a ute." Zecar also quoted him describing the MGU9 EV as bringing "the things people love about a ute, the space, flexibility and ability to get away for the weekend" together with "the comfort and refinement typically associated with a modern SUV". ⁴⁵

Powertrain, range and charging

4X4 Australia's specifications report detailed the MGU9 EV's mechanical package: a 102.2kWh LFP battery driving dual electric motors with all-wheel drive, producing 325kW and 700Nm, with a claimed 0-100km/h time of 5.8 seconds and a claimed WLTP range of 430km. Four-wheel Electronic Air Suspension is fitted. MG quotes 3500kg braked towing, 750kg unbraked towing and a 685kg payload; CarSauce and zecar repeated the same figures in their pricing coverage. ⁶³⁴⁵

Charging is supported at up to 11kW on AC and 115kW on DC, with MG quoting approximately 42 minutes for a 20 to 80 per cent DC charge, according to 4X4 Australia. Vehicle-to-load capability supplies up to 6.6kW through the external CCS2 outlet, and 4X4 Australia's earlier specifications story noted 2.2kW available through each of three outlets inside the cabin, while zecar and CarSauce describe 2.2kW of internal V2L overall. ⁶³⁴⁵

Practicality figures include a 236-litre front storage compartment, or frunk. 4X4 Australia's specifications report additionally noted the tub can accommodate a standard pallet. These are manufacturer-claimed specifications as reported by 4X4 Australia and repeated by zecar and CarSauce; no independent road test findings are cited in this coverage. ⁶³⁴⁵

Cabin equipment and safety

The cabin pairs dual 12.3-inch displays with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 15W wireless phone charging and an eight-speaker JBL sound system, with leather front seats fitted. The driver's seat offers heating, ventilation and massage functions. 4X4 Australia's specifications story additionally noted a heated front passenger seat and heated steering wheel, plus a hands-free automatic tailgate and a 360-degree camera system. ³⁴⁵⁶

On safety and ownership, the MGU9 EV holds a five-star ANCAP safety rating and will be sold through MG's nationwide dealer network, backed by a seven-year warranty when serviced within the MG dealer network, as reported by 4X4 Australia, zecar and CarSauce. ³⁴⁵

Position among Australia's electric utes

Zecar reported the MGU9 EV is the third fully electric ute confirmed for the Australian market, after the KGM Musso Electric and the Toyota HiLux BEV. Zecar noted the three models list pricing on different bases - MG's figure is MSRP plus on-road costs, KGM's is drive-away, and Toyota's is before on-road costs - so the headline numbers are not directly comparable without adjusting for that. Zecar also flagged that some Toyota HiLux BEV figures remain unconfirmed pending final Australian homologation. ⁴

In zecar's comparison, the MGU9 EV's 102.2kWh LFP battery is larger than the KGM Musso Electric's 80.6kWh LFP pack or the Toyota HiLux BEV's 59.2kWh lithium-ion unit, with 3500kg braked towing against the Musso Electric's 1800kg and roughly 2000kg (unconfirmed) for the HiLux BEV. Zecar listed the HiLux BEV at approximately 240km WLTP (315km NEDC claimed, unconfirmed) against the MG's 430km WLTP claim, while noting the Musso Electric charges faster on DC at 300kW against the MG's 115kW. All three models are on sale or confirmed on different timetables: the MGU9 EV from Q4 2026, the other two now. ⁴

Zecar also reported the MGU9 EV shares its underlying platform with the LDV Terron 9, both nameplates built by SAIC Motor, the parent company of MG and LDV, and both offered with diesel and fully electric powertrains; MG has confirmed a diesel version of the U9 for Australia alongside the electric model. Zecar added that MG Motor Australia, citing August 2026 figures, says battery electric vehicles account for almost one in four new vehicle sales in Australia, and that MG says the growing role of utes in family vehicle ownership shaped the MGU9 EV's design. ⁴

MG's specification claims and executive comments

Meng Chen, Head of Product at MG Motor Australia, was quoted by 4X4 Australia in the September specifications release: "With 430km of range, 3.5-tonne towing, 325kW of power and V2L capability, the MGU9 EV is designed to handle everyday driving as well as weekends away." Chen said the ute gives customers the option to move to an electric ute "without giving up the utility and flexibility they expect from the segment". ⁶

4X4 Australia also quoted Andreatidis saying the MGU9 EV "is designed to be used every day, whether that's for work during the week, the school run or getting away on the weekend", and that being the first global launch market "is also a significant milestone for MG and reflects the importance of Australia to our business". These are manufacturer statements rather than independently verified findings. ⁶

Diesel MGU9 line-up and current offers

The electric MGU9 EV will join a diesel-powered MGU9 range already in Australian showrooms. 4X4 Australia reported the diesel line-up comprises Explore, Explore X and Explore Pro variants priced from $55,000 to $65,000, using a 2.5-litre turbo-diesel producing 160kW and 520Nm, paired with an eight-speed automatic and full-time all-wheel drive, with 3500kg towing. MG's own website confirms the 2.5-litre turbo-diesel, 160kW/520Nm outputs and 3500kg braked towing - which MG notes is subject to state and federal regulatory requirements - across Explore, Explore X, Explore Black Edition and Explore Pro grades, with the Explore Pro offering an optional Smart Hatch midgate MG says unlocks up to 1600L of cargo space and carries loads up to 2.4m long. ⁶²

MG's current offers page lists September 2026 drive-away promotions on diesel MGU9 variants: Explore at a $52,990 drive-away price shown as $51,990 with a $1000 cashback, Explore X at $55,990/$54,990, Black Edition at $57,990/$56,990 and Explore Pro at $60,990/$59,990. The offers page specifies the $1000 MGU9 cashback applies to selected vehicles sold and delivered between 11 and 30 September 2026 at participating MG dealers, while the $2000 MGU9 trade-in bonus applies to new and selected demonstrator MGU9 vehicles sold and delivered between 1 and 30 September 2026, when trading in an eligible unencumbered vehicle; the page states the two offers can be used together. These offers apply to the diesel MGU9 range; the MGU9 EV's announced $78,990 is an MSRP excluding on-road costs, a different basis from the diesel drive-away amounts, and no EV drive-away pricing has been published. ¹³⁴
