Second-generation BYD Seal 07 revealed in China with bigger body, 718km EV range and new PHEV

Rapid replacement after official Chinese unveiling

The second-generation BYD Seal 07 has been officially unveiled in China, arriving only about six months after the original Seal 07 EV launched in the Chinese market in March 2026. As CarExpert reported, the new car follows its unofficial appearance in Chinese government certification documents last month, and will once again be offered in both plug-in hybrid and battery-electric forms. ¹²⁴

The current Seal 07 DM-i plug-in hybrid was launched in China in September 2025, several months before the current Seal 07 EV arrived in showrooms there, according to CarExpert. That unusually short product cycle is also noted by CarNewsChina, which reported the new sedan was exposed during homologation by China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) on August 7, 2026, applying for a sales licence ahead of its launch. ¹⁷

For context on the outgoing car, ZeCar reported at the first-generation Seal 07 EV's unveiling that it used BYD's e-Platform 3.0 Evo architecture, a 69.07kWh Blade battery, a 240kW rear motor and a claimed 705km range under China's CLTC cycle — figures ZeCar noted would equate to a lower WLTP result. ⁸

Bigger body and Ocean Aesthetics 2.0 design

According to BYD, the new Seal 07 measures 5080mm long, 1960mm wide and 1495mm tall on a wheelbase stretched by 60mm to 2960mm. That makes it 85mm longer and 50mm wider than the current Seal 07 EV it replaces, which measures 4995mm long and 1910mm wide, liberating a more spacious cabin although roof height is unchanged at 1495mm. ¹⁶

CarExpert reports the new car is 240mm longer than the plug-in hybrid Seal 6 sedan and Touring sold in Australia, and 280mm longer than the Seal electric sedan. The official dimensions confirm those previously revealed in an MIIT filing, per CarNewsChina. ¹⁴

The design adopts BYD's 'Ocean Aesthetics 2.0' philosophy, aligning the sedan's visual identity with the larger Seal 08 sold in China: a closed-grille front with wave-shaped split headlights and a full-width tail-light assembly, consistent with the Seal 08, according to CarNewsChina's report on BYD's official images. The car also carries a panoramic sunroof, semi-hidden door handles and a choice of 18-inch or 19-inch wheel designs. ¹⁶

A roof-mounted LiDAR unit indicates the inclusion of BYD's 'God's Eye B' advanced driver-assistance system, CarExpert reported. CarNewsChina's earlier report on the MIIT exposure described the LiDAR-based system as DiPilot 5.0, capable of a Navigate On Autopilot function — the two publications describe the driver-assistance suite differently, and BYD has not formally clarified which name applies. ¹⁷

Powertrains: 300kW EV flagship and DM-i plug-in hybrid

The new Seal 07 EV will come with a rear-mounted 300kW electric motor, a WLTP range of no less than 718km and a 240km/h top speed, according to CarExpert citing official figures. CarNewsChina reports the range comes from an 88.682kWh LFP battery in the long-range version, delivering 875km on China's stricter CLTC cycle. ¹⁵

So far there is no official sign of the entry-level Seal 07 EV, which according to MIIT documents produces 245kW — 5kW more than the current model, CarExpert reported. CarNewsChina adds MIIT-filed detail: the entry version uses a 76.744kWh LFP battery, manages 775km CLTC (636km WLTP), and can charge from 10 to 97 per cent in nine minutes using the new Blade 2.0 LFP pack's flash-charging capability. ¹³⁵

The new Seal 07 PHEV pairs a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine producing 115kW with an electric motor producing 160kW and a 38.029kWh lithium iron phosphate battery. There is a cycle discrepancy in the sources: CarExpert attributes the 245km electric-only range to the WLTC cycle, while its earlier report and Cars24 both list 245km under the CLTC cycle. Cars24 also lists the PHEV's top speed at 190km/h and fuel consumption of 4.25L/100km with the battery drained. ¹⁴³

Weak Chinese sales may explain the fast turnaround

The rapid replacement may be a response to weak demand. According to data cited by CarNewsChina from China EV DataTracker, BYD delivered just 1005 units of the ongoing Seal 07 — including both PHEV and BEV variants — in August 2026, after 627 units in June. ¹⁷

In Australia, by contrast, the smaller Seal remains BYD's best-selling sedan. CarExpert reported the Seal recorded 394 sales in July 2026, almost double the Seal 6's 199 deliveries across sedan and wagon body styles, though both sat well behind the Sealion 7 electric SUV, which found 2548 customers that month. ⁴

Australian prospects remain unconfirmed

The new Seal 07 has not been confirmed for Australia. CarExpert reports that Australian government certification filings published in May 2026 suggest the plug-in hybrid Seal 7, as it could be known locally, would become BYD's second PHEV sedan in Australian showrooms, following the Seal 6. BYD typically drops the zero from some Chinese-market model names for export markets, so a local version could plausibly be badged Seal 7 — but that remains speculation rather than confirmation. ¹⁴

Not every Australian outlet shares that outlook. Cars24 reported that with BYD already occupying the mid-size electric sedan segment locally through the Seal, automotive experts consider it highly unlikely the larger Seal 07 EV will reach Australian showrooms anytime soon — while noting the Seal 7 sedan has already appeared in official Australian Government homologation and approval documents as a larger, more powerful sedan than the Seal 6. ³

For now, the confirmed facts sit in China: an official unveiling, official dimensions and powertrain figures, and a model replacing its own predecessor within roughly six months. Any Australian specifications, pricing, launch timing or variant mix remain unknown, and Chinese-market range figures should not be read as Australian specifications. ¹²
