Honda ZR-V e:HEV LX: polished hybrid SUV earns fresh praise, but price and safety rating remain sticking points

What the road tests found

The flagship Honda ZR-V e:HEV LX has drawn a consistent verdict from two independent Australian road tests. GoAuto's review, published on 29 September 2026 and written by Neil Dowling, describes the top-spec hybrid as surprisingly nimble with delightful road manners, cornering like a well-tuned sedan thanks to a supple suspension and electric power steering that retains genuine feedback, and notes that occupants raised no complaints about quietness or ride compliance. ¹²

CarExpert, in its own review of the same variant, is similarly emphatic on dynamics, calling the ZR-V a star performer with crisp, accurate steering, an independent rear end inherited from the Civic, and what it describes as class-leading poise and road holding that remains unflappable even pushed beyond its comfort zone. CarExpert also praises the seamless hybrid powertrain and quality fit and finish, though it lists the smaller-than-rivals infotainment screen, polarising front-end design and the four-star safety rating among its cons. ⁴

Neither figure should be read as a DriveAgent test result. Both 5.4L/100km real-world readings are the published findings of the outlets that conducted the testing, and real-world consumption will vary with driving conditions. ¹⁴

Pricing: a cut, but two different published bases

GoAuto reports that Honda recently chopped $3000 off the ZR-V's price, and prices the test car at $51,900 drive-away, a figure it still calls not inexpensive in a competitive market. GoAuto lines the ZR-V up against the Nissan Qashqai ePower at $53,850 plus costs, the Toyota Corolla Cross Atmos/GR at $50,990 plus costs and the Jaecoo J7 PHEV at $47,990 drive-away, suggesting price and styling may sway buyers despite the Honda's driving appeal. ¹²

The pricing picture has moved over time. CarExpert's April 2026 review listed the e:HEV LX at $54,900 before on-road costs, including pearlescent paint, which it noted was $5900 more than the petrol-only LX. CarExpert's January long-term introduction had quoted $54,900 drive-away. Separately, CarExpert's current specification sheet for the 2026 e:HEV LX shows $51,900 drive-away on a Sydney basis, with prices varying between states and territories. The $3000 reduction GoAuto describes is consistent with the shift from the $54,900 figures to the current $51,900 drive-away listing, but the different bases — list price before on-roads versus drive-away — should not be compared as a discrepancy. ⁴⁶³¹

Dimensions and practicality

The ZR-V e:HEV LX measures 4568mm long, 1840mm wide and 1620mm high on a 2655mm wheelbase, with kerb weight of 1586kg, turning circle of 11.0 metres and unladen ground clearance of 186mm, according to CarExpert's specification data. GoAuto's review matches the external dimensions and notes the ZR-V sits between the CR-V and HR-V in size, only 136mm shorter than the CR-V and about 200mm longer than the HR-V, yet is classified as a medium SUV while looking more like a small SUV entrant. ³¹²

Boot space is the practicality weak point. GoAuto calls the 370-litre cargo area more small-SUV than medium, smaller even than the Civic e:HEV hatch on which it is based at 409 litres, expanding to 1302 litres with the rear seats folded. CarExpert confirms those hybrid figures and points out the RAV4 (580L/1690L), CX-5 (506L/1620L) and Qashqai (452L/1518L) all offer more. Cabin room fares better, with GoAuto reporting good leg and head room for two adults in the back and easy door access, and three top-tether anchors plus two ISOFIX points for child seats. ¹²⁴

Equipment, safety rating and a recent recall

The LX grade brings leather upholstery with heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel, electric front seats, satellite navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay, wired Android Auto, built-in Google technology, a 12-speaker Bose audio system and wireless phone charging, with a 9.0-inch central touchscreen and a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster. GoAuto judges the fit and finish very good, coming close to vindicating the $51,000-plus price tag, though its headline cons include the four-star crash rating and no spare wheel. The e:HEV LX substitutes a tyre repair kit for a space-saver spare. ¹²⁴

The ZR-V holds a four-star ANCAP rating based on 2023 Euro NCAP testing, with 79 per cent for adult occupant protection, 88 per cent for child occupant protection, 81 per cent for vulnerable road user protection and 68 per cent for safety assist. GoAuto attributes the missed fifth star to the front centre airbag not sufficiently preventing front occupants' heads from colliding; CarExpert instead reports the shortfall stemmed from rear cross-traffic alert not being available on all grades. Either way, all variants carry 11 airbags, AEB, lane keeping, adaptive cruise control and a driver attention monitor, and GoAuto notes the absence of intrusive speed-warning chimes. ¹²⁴

There is also a fresh ownership issue to note: CarExpert has reported a recall of current-generation Honda ZR-V, Civic and Accord vehicles because seatbacks in some examples do not meet local regulations, increasing injury risk in a crash. Buyers considering a used or new ZR-V should confirm any affected vehicle has been rectified. ⁶

Running costs and the hybrid powertrain

Honda's ownership story is a genuine selling point. GoAuto details a five-year unlimited-distance warranty extendable to eight years if the car is serviced by Honda for five years, roadside assistance stretching the same way, a separate eight-year hybrid battery warranty, five years of free over-the-air map updates and five years of Honda Connect. Servicing runs every 12 months or 10,000km at a flat $199 per visit — which GoAuto calls about the cheapest on the market — extendable to eight years at the same price. CarExpert's specification data lists total five-year capped-price servicing at $995, while CarExpert's review page quotes $1894 over five years at an average $378.80 per year; both describe the same capped-price program, and the difference between the two totals is not explained in the material at hand. ¹²³⁴

The e:HEV system pairs a 2.0-litre naturally aspirated Atkinson-cycle petrol engine (104kW/186Nm, shared with the Civic, CR-V and Prelude hybrids) with a two-motor e-CVT delivering combined system outputs of 135kW and 315Nm to the front wheels. GoAuto explains that because the traction motor is always the primary drive source with the petrol engine acting as generator, there is no discernible transition between power sources — a quality CarExpert confirms, describing near-seamless switching and a smooth, quiet powertrain. Honda claims 5.0L/100km combined (with 2.5L/100km city and 6.5L/100km highway figures also quoted), on 91RON from a 57-litre tank for a theoretical 1140km range, with CO2 of 114g/km and braked towing of 750kg. ¹²³⁴

For broader context, The West Australian tested the related e:HEV L grade — one rung below the LX — in August 2026 and reported 5.0L/100km over a week of city and highway driving, praising responsive steering and a very polished ride but noting more road noise than expected. Because that test covered the L variant rather than the LX, its findings are indicative of the hybrid range rather than a like-for-like verdict on the flagship. ⁵
