The biography

Moffat’s Falcon achievements made him a defining figure of the 1970s. His fourth touring-car championship came with Mazda in 1983; all four of his Bathurst wins came in the 1970s.

A rotary challenge to the V8s

Moffat’s move to Mazda changed the sound and competitive shape of Australian touring-car racing. The lightweight rotary-powered RX-7 challenged the big local sedans during the final years of Group C, and delivered the 1983 championship.

That year’s Sandown 400 made Mazda’s strength especially visible. Moffat won, while RX-7s filled eight of the top twelve finishing places. It was a manufacturer story as well as a driver’s success.

Success across different machinery

The Mazda programme continued through 1984 before the change to international Group A rules ended that chapter. That chapter adds a significant reinvention to Moffat’s earlier Falcon reputation.

His four Bathurst wins were earned in the 1970s. Keeping that context beside the full-career totals lets readers distinguish the Ford endurance record from the later Mazda championship.
