The biography

The Queensland driver built Dick Johnson Racing around Ford machinery. His driving record is counted separately from the championships and Bathurst victories his team later earned with other drivers.

Building again after Bathurst

The 1980 collision with a rock at Mount Panorama could have ended Johnson’s campaign. Public donations, matched by Ford, helped the small team rebuild. The following season brought both the Australian Touring Car Championship and Bathurst, turning that support into sporting success.

Tru-Blu became much more than a paint scheme. The blue XD Falcon represents the moment Johnson emerged as Ford’s leading local challenger, with another championship following in 1982.

The driver and the team

Further titles came in the Falcon and the turbocharged Sierra. With John Bowe, Johnson won Bathurst in 1989 and again in 1994, taking the partnership from Group A into the five-litre V8 era.

Dick Johnson Racing continued beyond its founder’s full-time driving career. That distinction matters: the five championships and three Bathurst wins here are Johnson’s driving achievements, rather than a combined total for everyone who has raced for his organisation.
