Volkswagen opens vehicle dismantling line at Zwickau EV plant, targeting 4,100 cars a year from 2027

Volkswagen's Zwickau plant has unveiled its first Circular Economy Hub, with an industrial dismantling line intended to process 4,100 end-of-life vehicles a year from 2027 — but the venture does not remove uncertainty over the site's production future beyond 2031.

What has opened at Zwickau

Volkswagen's all-electric Zwickau plant in Saxony has opened an industrial dismantling line for used vehicles, marking the start of what the company calls its first Circular Economy Hub. Reuters reported the facility was unveiled on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at the eastern German factory. From 2027, the site plans to dismantle 4,100 vehicles a year across two shifts, using 100 workers retrained for the new tasks. 54

According to dpa reporting carried by Sachsen News, conversion and approval processes for the operation were completed in nine months, three months ahead of schedule. InsideEVs, in reporting syndicated via UA.News, describes an eight-stage line that will initially work with pre-series vehicles and later accept vehicles that have reached the end of their service life. Volkswagen's own January 2026 press release stated that 500 pre-series test vehicles were already being processed this year, with vehicle numbers increasing from 2027. 341

The operation serves two purposes: suitable components are recovered for remanufacture and resale, while raw materials such as plastics are recycled for use in new cars. Volkswagen noted in its press release that clean material separation is needed to obtain pure recyclates, and that data platforms and artificial intelligence will be used to track material flows and recycling processes. 14

Parts recovery and the recycled-plastics driver

Volkswagen says it has been selling reusable original parts removed at Zwickau since July 2026, with doors, bumpers, engines and transmission components in highest demand. The parts are distributed through dealer and service networks, independent workshops and component sellers, according to the company's account carried by InsideEVs via UA.News. Volkswagen expects such parts could reduce repair costs and help extend the use of older vehicles. 4

dpa reported that recovered items include doors, fenders, wheels, headlights, transmission components and engines, and that recycled plastics will be used in new cars. This aligns with an EU requirement that, in the future, a portion of the plastic used in new vehicles must come from recycled material. Volkswagen also noted that recycled plastic from one vehicle can be used in components for three new cars, although not across the full volume of the material. 34

These figures are company statements about a newly opened operation; the commercial viability of parts resale and recyclate supply at this scale has not yet been independently established. 45

Investment figures and the jobs outlook

Volkswagen plans to invest up to €90 million in the Zwickau circular economy operation over the next few years, directed at conversion work, technical equipment and artificial intelligence applications, according to its January 2026 press release. The Free State of Saxony is supporting the overall project with up to €10.7 million. Reuters reported the regional government's pledge at the same €10.7 million figure, and noted the project was awarded to Zwickau in a bid to secure up to 1,000 jobs over the longer term. 15

The jobs trajectory is a company estimate rather than a committed outcome. dpa reported that employment in the dismantling segment is expected to grow from an initial 100 to up to 1,000, with vehicle volumes rising gradually to up to 15,000 cars a year by 2030. Volkswagen's press release frames the 15,000-vehicle figure as planned capacity growth via a modular dismantling concept, decided during collective bargaining negotiations in December 2024. 31

A pilot venture inside a threatened plant

The launch sits against significant uncertainty for the site. Reuters reported that Zwickau, which employs around 8,000 people, is among Volkswagen sites under threat, with no vehicle production currently planned beyond 2031 under the group's restructuring. Volkswagen is pressing ahead with deep cost cuts, including plans for 100,000 job reductions and possible closure of four German plants, hit by loss of dominance in China and Chinese competition in Europe. Reuters noted production shifts are also expected to create excess capacity from mid-2026. 5

Reuters reported that company sources and industry observers said the recycling venture alone would not secure the plant's future. Henning Wilts, a circular economy researcher at Germany's Wuppertal Institute, called the Zwickau hub an experiment whose commercial viability had yet to be proven: "This is a pilot project that you launch to see if it's scalable and if it's really an investment that will pay off quickly enough. It is certainly not the answer to all the questions in the European auto industry." 5

Volkswagen executives presented the venture differently. Thomas Schaefer, CEO of Volkswagen's volume brands, told the launch event, as reported by Reuters: "For us, dismantling and recycling doesn't mean a junkyard - it means creating value." Saxony's Economy Minister Dirk Panter said in a statement that the circular economy for automotive components opens new business opportunities and offers long-term employment prospects; the state government faces pressure to protect an auto industry linked to one in four jobs in Saxony. 5

Volkswagen's January press release positioned Zwickau as the group's central competence centre for the circular economy under its 'REDUCE & GROW' strategy, with the site to set standards and make knowledge available to other locations worldwide. Andreas Walingen, Head of Group Circular Economy, said the company aims to reuse raw materials in new vehicles, reduce dependence on the global raw materials trade and lower the CO2 footprint of its vehicles, and that a European value-creation network would be needed in the medium term to scale the business economically. 1

Plant context

Zwickau was the first large car factory completely converted to electric mobility, at a cost of €1.2 billion, with the last internal-combustion vehicle built there in June 2020. It now produces six electric models across three group brands — the Volkswagen ID.3, ID.4 and ID.5, Audi Q4 e-tron and Sportback e-tron, and Cupra Born — and around 204,000 vehicles in 2024, according to the Saxony economic development agency. Bodies for the Bentley Bentayga and Lamborghini Urus are also manufactured at the site. 2

Along with Emden, Hanover and Neckarsulm, Zwickau is one of four German locations where the future of vehicle production remains uncertain, dpa reported. There is no documented Australian dimension to this announcement: it concerns a German facility and German market operations, with the recovered-parts network extending through dealer and workshop channels in that market. 3
