Wolfspeed signs multiyear silicon-carbide supply deal for BorgWarner's 800-volt EV inverter platform

Wolfspeed will supply 1200V silicon-carbide devices for BorgWarner's 800V inverter platform under a multiyear agreement, securing long-term supply from US 200mm wafer production as the suppliers extend a partnership that dates back to government-funded inverter research.

Wolfspeed locks in multiyear SiC supply for BorgWarner's 800V inverter

Wolfspeed has agreed a multiyear deal to supply silicon-carbide (SiC) devices for BorgWarner's 800V SiC-based inverter platform for electric vehicles. Automotive World, reporting the announcement sourced from Wolfspeed, says the arrangement deepens a longstanding collaboration between the two suppliers and secures BorgWarner long-term access to the 1200V SiC technology used in the inverter. The companies have not named the vehicle models, launch timing or markets the inverter will serve, and no Australian application is confirmed. 1

Continuity of supply sits at the centre of the deal. Wolfspeed says it will give BorgWarner consistent, uninterrupted access to its devices, backed by United States production that has moved entirely to 200mm wafers, and that its devices are built to withstand high heat and high voltage. In a statement carried by Automotive World, Matthias Buchner, Senior Vice President of Global Sales and Chief Marketing Officer at Wolfspeed, said the agreement brings together "advanced silicon carbide technology, proven quality and reliability, and scaled 200 mm manufacturing capabilities to deliver the performance and supply confidence BorgWarner needs for their next-generation EV platform." 1

The 800V inverter platform and its variants

BorgWarner's own materials describe the 800V silicon-carbide inverter family as offering what the company calls ideal scalability, superior efficiency and high power density. In a February 2023 release, BorgWarner announced it would build on its existing 400V inverter business with a major global OEM by also supplying 800V SiC inverters destined for battery electric vehicle platforms, in two variants: a 250kW unit for passenger cars and all-wheel-drive crossover utility vehicles, and a 350kW module for the OEM's performance vehicles. The company said the program was to reach start of production in 2025, with peak annual volume nearing 400,000 units. 3

The inverters draw on BorgWarner's Viper-based family of silicon and SiC power modules. BorgWarner stated that the approach delivers lower mass, higher efficiencies, exceptional scalability and higher power densities, with its inverters ranging from 150 to 350kW and able to be customised to customer needs. These are the manufacturer's claims rather than independent test findings, and the release did not specify which vehicles would carry the hardware. 3

Origins in US Department of Energy-funded development

The Wolfspeed relationship reaches back further than the current supply deal. In October 2021, BorgWarner announced it had received a $4.97 million award from the US Department of Energy to develop a Scalable Ultra Power-dense Extended Range (SUPER) inverter, part of a 24-project, $60 million program aimed at reducing transport CO2 emissions. Wolfspeed was named a key supplier on the 39-month project, which also involved Infineon Technologies Americas, PolyCharge America, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and Virginia Tech. 4

The project's stated goal was an inverter smaller, more efficient and more cost-effective than those on the market, targeting 100kW per litre of power density for 800-volt electrified vehicles, with power scaling between 100kW and 300kW and the option of standalone use or integration into a drive unit containing a motor and gearbox. BorgWarner said it would leverage its existing 800V Viper SiC inverter experience, using a building-block approach and increased component integration, and expected to move the technology from development to production relatively quickly once validation was complete. 4

A wider pattern of high-voltage inverter awards

BorgWarner's inverter business has continued to grow since the 2023 OEM award. In an August 2026 announcement, the company said it had secured a major extension of multiple high-volume high-voltage inverter programs with a major European OEM, covering updated designs for both plug-in hybrid and 800V battery-electric applications, with start of production planned for 2029. For the 800V battery-electric application, BorgWarner's traction inverter features what it describes as a new generation of its proprietary Viper SiC power switches and a dual-sided-cooled power module, combining high efficiency with cost competitiveness. 2

The same August 2026 announcement, from BorgWarner directly, details a plug-in hybrid inverter design using the company's proprietary Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) technology, already proven in its 800V inverter portfolio and stated to be fully compatible with the customer's new vehicle operating system. Isabelle McKenzie, President and General Manager of BorgWarner PowerDrive Systems, said extending several high-volume programs at the same time confirmed the company's position in power electronics. It is not stated whether this European OEM program is the customer served by the Wolfspeed supply agreement, and the two announcements should not be assumed to cover the same vehicles. 2

Market context and what is not yet known

Wolfspeed frames the deal against a growing EV market. Automotive World reports that electric vehicles took 25 per cent of global new car sales in 2025, and that the International Energy Agency expects that share to approach half by 2035. Wolfspeed argues that silicon carbide is becoming critical to the power density and performance automakers need as they scale up EV platforms. 1

Several details remain unstated. The announcement does not identify the vehicle models or OEM programs the supplied devices will support, the launch timing or the markets involved, and no Australian application is confirmed. Power ratings quoted above come from BorgWarner's 2023 program description and should not be read as confirmed figures for the vehicles that will eventually use the Wolfspeed-supplied devices. For buyers, the practical significance is indirect: silicon-carbide inverters are a manufacturer-efficiency technology, and BorgWarner claims benefits in mass, efficiency and power density for its high-voltage family, but downstream vehicle specifications, range and charging performance would need to be confirmed in each OEM's own vehicle announcements. 13
