Audi and Spotify launch the first fully native in-car Spotify app

Audi announced on October 21, 2026 that it has become the first automaker to integrate Spotify's fully native app experience directly into a vehicle. Built with Android Automotive OS, the app operates through the car's infotainment system and does not require a connected smartphone, in contrast to the template-based apps Audi says have previously been used for in-vehicle versions. Audi's media release confirms the app is available from October 21, 2026 exclusively through the Audi Application Store for supported newer models built on the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) and Premium Platform Combustion (PPC) architectures. 12

Spotify's own newsroom announcement describes the same launch the same day, calling it a next-generation in-car app launching first across Audi's current line-up. Spotify says drivers sign in once and playback is ready when the car starts, with no cables or Bluetooth pairing needed for listening; a phone is used for the initial sign-in. Spotify notes the Audi connect package may be required, and that availability may vary by vehicle and market. 4

The integration was developed jointly by Audi, Spotify and Cariad, the Volkswagen Group's software subsidiary, according to Audi's release and Dutch outlet Autoblog's report of the launch. Spotify serves more than 777 million users worldwide, Audi states, and is the world's most popular audio streaming subscription service. 13

Features: music videos, lyrics, Jam and DJ, adapted for the car

The native app brings Spotify features into the vehicle that previously relied on phone projection, including music videos, real-time lyrics, Spotify Jam and Spotify DJ. Spotify explains that with Spotify Jam, passengers can scan an on-screen QR code to join a shared listening session and add songs to the queue from their phones. Voice control is supported through the vehicle's native "Hey Audi" commands and Spotify's DJ, which can shape what plays next. 14

Spotify automotive business development lead Jonathan Tarlton said in Spotify's announcement: "We know how much our listeners love taking Spotify on the road, and this new native app takes that experience to the next level." He added that drivers get instant, hands-free access from the moment they sit down, while passengers can watch videos, follow lyrics and add to the queue together. Separately, Brazilian outlet SpaceMoney, citing The Verge, reports Tarlton as saying Spotify remains committed to CarPlay and Android Auto and wants to offer users alternatives, so phone-based integrations are not being abandoned. 45

Driver-distraction design: driving-state restrictions and passenger screens

Audi's media release details how the app limits features while the vehicle is in motion to reduce driver distraction. On the central MMI display, sign-in and settings functions are unavailable while driving, music videos and real-time lyrics are hidden, and related controls are removed from the Now Playing View. Voice control including "Hey Audi" and Spotify DJ remains usable while driving. 1

In appropriately equipped vehicles, features such as videos and lyrics remain available on the front passenger display while the car is moving, and the full feature set and expanded browsing become available on the central display once the vehicle is parked. Spotify's announcement adds that when parked, including while an EV is charging, drivers can use the main display for full-screen video podcasts, music videos and real-time lyrics. 14

Which models and platforms are eligible

Audi states the native Spotify app is initially available for new PPE and PPC models from model year 2026 onwards: the electric A6 e-tron and Q6 e-tron, plus the combustion-based A5, Q5 and A6. The upcoming Q7 and Q9 SUVs will gain support at their respective market launches. The app can be downloaded from the Audi Application Store free of charge, but requires a Spotify account, with costs depending on the applicable market and the user's selected Spotify tariff. Swedish outlet M3 similarly notes the download is free but requires an active Spotify account and, for connectivity, a data package. 16

The Audi Application Store, which is embedded directly in the MMI and usable without a connected smartphone, carries the app portfolio that varies by market, alongside other partners such as DAZN, Disney+ and YouTube. Audi describes the store as a central platform for bringing third-party apps into the vehicle, with compatible apps able to use the car's controls and displays depending on model, equipment and software configuration. 21

Australia named among 47 markets, with timing still unconfirmed

Audi's media release states the native Spotify app will launch in 47 Audi markets worldwide, spanning Europe, North and South America, Asia, Africa and Australia. Spotify's newsroom post confirms the October 21 launch for both Free and Premium listeners on the eligible models, and says the experience will expand to additional global automotive partners over the coming year. 14

While Australia is among the 47 markets Audi has named, the company's announcement does not specify an Australian rollout date, which local model years and variants will receive the app locally, or any Australian pricing or offer conditions. SpaceMoney similarly reports that no individual countries were detailed among the 47 markets. Availability, as Spotify notes, may vary by vehicle and market, so Australian buyers should treat the local timing and model applicability as unconfirmed until Audi Australia states them. 154
