Prototypes hit the road as the programme shifts to industrialisation

BMW has moved its iX5 Hydrogen into a new development phase, running an extensive prototype road-testing programme in parallel with prototype assembly of the third-generation fuel cell system at the Hydrogen Competence Centre in Munich. At the same time, BMW Group Plant Steyr in Austria is being prepared for eventual series production of the fuel cell system, with the first test benches and manufacturing equipment installed and employee training under way. The update was reported in September 2026 by outlets including Automotive World, VISION mobility and Driven Car Guide, each citing BMW Group. 453

Testing focuses on how the complete drivetrain operates together under demanding environmental and driving conditions: the fuel cell system, electric motor, high-voltage battery, hydrogen storage tanks and the central high-voltage system controller, which BMW refers to as the Energy Master. BMW says the high-voltage battery and Energy Master are intended, among other things, to enable higher recuperation performance. Engineers are also concentrating on maintaining drivetrain performance under high load while refining efficiency and the driving behaviour expected of a BMW. 4531

"Prototype assembly is about much more than manufacturing individual components. Each phase helps us optimise processes, gain experience and systematically share this knowledge with the teams in Steyr. In this way, we are laying the foundation for the next steps on the road to industrialisation," said Claudia Stephan, Head of Technology Development and Fuel Cell Prototype Assembly at BMW Group, as quoted by Automotive World. 4

Performance, range and refuelling targets

BMW has set a development target of 0-100km/h in under five seconds for the production iX5 Hydrogen, matching the performance of the battery-electric iX5. For context, BMWBLOG notes the new iX5 60 xDrive completes the sprint in 4.6 seconds. The hydrogen model is to come with xDrive all-wheel drive as standard, and BMWBLOG reports one electric motor driving the front axle and another the rear. Final power and torque figures have not been released. 41

BMW is targeting a WLTP range of up to 750km (466 miles) and hydrogen refuelling in less than five minutes, figures repeated consistently across BMW-sourced coverage from VISION mobility, Driven Car Guide and Sunday World. However, the company stresses the vehicle remains a development prototype and that no binding consumption figures are yet available. Sunday World, quoting BMW, notes the iX5 Hydrogen uses a fuel cell to convert hydrogen into electricity that powers an electric motor, rather than burning hydrogen in a combustion engine. 5361

The range and refuelling claims rest on BMW's Hydrogen Flat Storage System: seven carbon-fibre-reinforced tanks holding hydrogen at 700 bar, with combined capacity of up to 7kg. BMWBLOG, drawing on BMW's released specifications, says the tanks are designed to occupy the same space as the 141kWh battery in the electric iX5, and that BMW claims zero cabin space is lost relative to the battery-electric model, with cargo capacity expected at between 655 and 1850 litres. The third-generation fuel cell co-developed with Toyota is 25 percent more compact than the previous generation. 891

Where the hydrogen X5 fits in the X5 family

The iX5 Hydrogen will be the fifth powertrain option on the new X5, alongside petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid and battery-electric versions, a line-up confirmed in BMW-sourced reporting from VISION mobility and Meinbezirk. BMWBLOG expects the conventional variants to arrive first: six-cylinder petrol and diesel models, two plug-in hybrids, the battery iX5 60 and two V8s, with the hydrogen model launching at a later stage. BMWBLOG's June specifications article states the iX5 Hydrogen is confirmed for production but will launch after the rest of the G65 X5 line-up, and it shares the CLAR architecture and production line with the rest of the family. 5289

Estimated dimensions reported by BMWBLOG, based on BMW's figures, put the hydrogen model at 4994mm long, 2000mm wide and 1748mm tall, essentially identical to the electric iX5, with a weight expected around 2900kg. An M Sport Package is expected, and the model uses BMW's Heart of Joy control system. These are expectations based on BMW's released specifications rather than full confirmed data; BMWBLOG notes performance figures and other details are still to be confirmed closer to production. 9

Public funding and co-development underpin the programme

Development of the powertrain and tank system is heavily publicly funded. Germany's Federal Ministry of Transport is providing €191 million for the HyPowerDrive project, with the state of Bavaria contributing a further €82 million, figures confirmed consistently across BMW-sourced reporting from Automotive World, VISION mobility, Driven Car Guide and Sunday World. Automotive World notes the funding comes under the IPCEI Hy2Move framework. 4536

The fuel cell system is co-developed with Toyota, and Sunday World adds historical context: a pilot fleet of iX5 Hydrogen vehicles ran public-road trials in South Africa from early 2024 through a partnership between BMW Group South Africa, Sasol and Anglo American Platinum (now Valterra Platinum), following an agreement signed at the South African Green Hydrogen Summit in October 2023. 436

Infrastructure remains the open question, and launch timing is still qualified

BMW's own roadmap places the hydrogen X5 as its first series-production fuel-cell vehicle, with BMWBLOG reporting an expected showroom debut possibly around 2028 and noting the model is unlikely to be available globally, since selling it in markets without sufficient hydrogen refuelling infrastructure would make little sense. No pricing, market allocation or launch timing for specific markets has been disclosed. Driven Car Guide reports that New Zealand launch timing, pricing and hydrogen-infrastructure plans have not been announced, and Sunday World reports BMW has not confirmed whether the production model will be offered in South Africa. 18736

The market backdrop is challenging, particularly in Germany. VISION mobility reports that refuelling operator H2 Mobility has consolidated the 700-bar passenger-car network in recent years, closing six older stations announced at the end of 2024, eleven in each of two 2025 consolidation phases and a further 14 announced by the end of 2025, while shifting investment toward larger facilities for commercial vehicles. The same report notes H2 Mobility lowered hydrogen prices at five heavily used stations by around ten percent as of June 1, 2026, citing economies of scale and a higher share of green hydrogen. VISION mobility's own analysis frames this as BMW developing a long-range, fast-refuelling passenger car even as German hydrogen supply increasingly prioritises commercial vehicles, meaning practicality for fleets will depend on fuel costs and station access as much as the vehicle itself. 5
