Nissan X-Trail Rock Creek review: rugged looks, seven seats and no Australian hybrid
Australia's new adventure-flavoured X-Trail brings extra kit and bold styling over the ST-L for a modest premium, but GoAuto's New Zealand drive highlights the curious gap left by the petrol-only line-up.

A new flavour of X-Trail
The Rock Creek badge makes its X-Trail debut in Australia as part of an expanded 13-variant line-up timed for the nameplate's 25th anniversary locally. GoAuto's review, written by Haitham Razagui following a launch drive in New Zealand, describes it as a lifestyle vehicle aimed at adventure-minded families who want their car to look ready for the weekend, rather than a machine with genuinely enhanced off-road ability. It is based on the seven-seat ST-L 4WD and carries a $2435 premium at $48,315 plus on-road costs. 126
Nissan's own announcement frames the Rock Creek similarly, with managing director Steve Milette saying the grade pairs "genuine, rugged attitude with seven-seat practicality". The model is one of four new variants joining the range, alongside front-wheel-drive e-Power editions of the ST-L, Ti and Ti-L. All are available to order now. 6
This is not a DriveAgent road test. The driving impressions cited here are those of GoAuto's reviewer on Nissan's launch route; DriveAgent's assessment draws on that reporting plus independently published specification data. 17
What you get for the premium
The changes over the donor ST-L focus on styling and technology. GoAuto details a black grille with a distinctive three-slot horizontal treatment inspired by the D21 and current Navara utes, black roof rails, gloss-black door mirrors, a unique front lower bumper and exclusive 18-inch alloy wheels with orange accents matching the front and rear badging. A new Baja Storm paint with a black roof heads the colour palette at $1495, the same price as Ceramic Grey, while Everest White is a $500 option. 126
Inside, ballistic nylon-trimmed seats carry embroidered Rock Creek badging with orange contrast stitching across the seats and dash, and an orange Nissan badge accent on the steering wheel, as described by GoAuto and in Nissan's launch material. More tangibly, the grade gains a 10.8-inch head-up display and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster in place of the donor's 7.0-inch driver display and analogue dials. 16
Beyond those additions, GoAuto reports the Rock Creek shares the ST-L equipment list, including LED headlights, a 12.3-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, heated front seats, an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat, dual-zone climate control, a hands-free power tailgate, a 360-degree camera and autonomous emergency braking with lane and blind-spot intervention. 1
Dimensions and specifications
CarExpert's specification data for the 2026 X-Trail Rock Creek lists overall length of 4680mm, width of 1840mm (2065mm including mirrors), height of 1725mm and a 2705mm wheelbase, with 235/60 R18 tyres, 205mm unladen ground clearance, a 55-litre fuel tank and a kerb weight of 1666kg. The 2.5-litre four-cylinder produces 135kW at 6000rpm and 244Nm at 3600rpm through a continuously variable transmission with manual mode, and CarExpert lists 7.8L/100km combined fuel use and 183g/km of CO2 on the ADR 81/02 cycle, corresponding to a calculated range of 705km. 75
Towing capacity is rated at 2000kg braked and 750kg unbraked, per CarExpert, a figure GoAuto also cites while noting the 244Nm torque output might make a full two-tonne load challenging. Braking is by ventilated discs all round, and the safety suite includes seven airbags with CarExpert listing the wider X-Trail's five-star ANCAP rating (tested in e-Power e-4orce form in 2022, valid until the end of 2027). 71
The Rock Creek is one of four new variants in the anniversary-year expansion. Nissan's announcement prices the new 2WD e-Power grades at $45,990 for the ST-L, $50,915 for the Ti and $54,715 for the Ti-L, and claims combined fuel use of 5.4L/100km and 123g/km of CO2 on the ADR 81/02 cycle for the two-wheel-drive hybrids, an improvement of roughly 11.5 per cent over the all-wheel-drive e-Power variants. Those are manufacturer figures for comparison purposes; the Rock Creek itself remains petrol-only in Australia. 6
How it drives on light off-road terrain
GoAuto drove the Rock Creek along Nissan's launch route beside Lake Wakatipu on the South Island, including a mild off-road trail with a series of creek crossings. The reviewer found the Bridgestone Alenza Sport all-season tyres on 18-inch rims offered plenty of grip on gravel and wet creek exits, aided by well-judged steering, a supple but planted ride and predictable throttle response. Nissan staff at the event said the terrain was of a type an average X-Trail-owning family could comfortably negotiate. 12
GoAuto also observed 8.4L/100km on the trip computer during the rural drive against the official 7.8L/100km rating, and noted that Australia's Rock Creek makes do without the all-terrain rubber fitted in some other markets, though it keeps a temporary spare wheel and the 205mm ground clearance of petrol X-Trails. 1
The same review's broader verdict is that the current X-Trail is a polished product: an intuitive interface, unobtrusive driver assistance and sound dynamics, with space, comfort and ease of use that buyers are unlikely to be disappointed by. Those are GoAuto's findings from its launch drive, not DriveAgent's independent testing. 1
The hybrid question
Australia gets only the petrol Rock Creek, while New Zealand also offers a five-seat e-Power hybrid version. GoAuto calls the omission in Australia "rather curious", arguing that for buyers intending to go bush the petrol engine's simplicity, spare wheel, extra ground clearance and towing capacity are genuine upsides, but for everyone else the lack of a hybrid could be disappointing or even a deal breaker. 1
According to CarExpert, Nissan has not ruled the hybrid out. Senior X-Trail product manager Aleks Pecanac told the publication: "I think the availability to potentially turn it on is 100 per cent there", explaining the car is approved for both markets but that complexity and dealer feedback favour a simpler line-up, and that an e-Power Rock Creek would overlap pricing with existing grades. Managing director Steve Milette told CarExpert that Nissan gives Australia and New Zealand autonomy over their ranges and "will listen to the market" if demand is high enough. 3
CarExpert also notes the Rock Creek effectively replaces the N-Trek in the local range, and that no Australian X-Trail e-Power variant is offered with seven seats, so choosing the petrol Rock Creek is the only way to combine rugged styling with the third row. 3
Pricing, availability and ownership
Nissan lists the Rock Creek at $48,315 as manufacturer's list price excluding on-road costs, per its launch announcement. CarExpert's data shows the model went on sale in Australia on 4 July 2026 and quotes a drive-away figure from $52,848 based on a Sydney location; the two figures are on different bases and should not be read as a price discrepancy. CarExpert adds that an e-Power version would likely have been priced at least $51,315 before on-roads, undercutting the Ti e-Power. 673
Ownership terms follow the wider MY26 range. Nissan states all MY26 X-Trails carry a service-activated 10-year/300,000km warranty with up to 10 years of roadside assistance when serviced at authorised dealers, and capped-price servicing of $399 for the first five years; GoAuto's review confirms the same terms apply to the Rock Creek. CarExpert lists service intervals of 12 months or 10,000km. 617
For context, CarExpert's range data shows X-Trail drive-away pricing spanning $42,472 to $63,417 across the line-up, with the Rock Creek sitting in the upper-middle of a range that competes against the Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-5, Mitsubishi Outlander, Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tucson. Nissan's launch release notes more than 338,500 X-Trails have been sold in Australia over 25 years, with the fourth-generation T33 accounting for 54,252 of those since 2023, based on VFACTS data cited by the company. 46
