Hyundai's electric portfolio widens: STARIA Electric MPV debuts, IONIQ V launches in China, Inster holds firm in Australia

STARIA Electric: the flagship MPV goes fully electric

Hyundai Motor Company unveiled the STARIA Electric at the Brussels Motor Show on 9 January 2026, describing it in its worldwide newsroom release as the company's flagship MPV and a bold step forward in multi-purpose vehicle innovation. The release presents it as the first fully electric version of the STARIA line-up, aimed at families, shuttle operators and commercial users, with a flat floor, wide interior dimensions and a lounge-like cabin shaped by the brand's 'Inside Out' design theme. ³

IONIQ V launches as the centrepiece of a renewed China strategy

At Auto China 2026 in Beijing on 24 April 2026, Hyundai Motor Company unveiled the all-new IONIQ V, which it describes as the first dedicated IONIQ production model for the Chinese market, derived from the VENUS Concept and introducing a new 'The Origin' design language. Company President and CEO José Muñoz said China is an essential market and that Hyundai is 'tripling down' on its commitment there, per the company's release. ²

The same Hyundai release details dimensions of 4,900 mm in length, 1,890 mm in width and a 2,900 mm wheelbase, a 27-inch ultra-thin 4K panoramic display and a Horizon head-up display, and says the long-range version secures a driving range of over 600 kilometres on the CLTC standard. The Australian entry point: an independent read on the Inster

In Australia, the smallest Hyundai electric vehicle has drawn independent scrutiny. In a week-long evaluation of a 2026 Inster Standard Range press vehicle provided by Hyundai Australia, reviewer Henry Man found the micro EV zippy and fun to drive with well-tuned dynamics and strong efficiency, while criticising its premium price, cheap interior materials, odd boot design and wired-only Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. His testing recorded 13.6 kWh/100 km against a WLTP claim of 14.3 kWh/100 km, with roughly 295 km of real-world range from the approximately 39 kWh usable battery and an 18 to 80 per cent DC session in around 28 minutes at a 150 kW charger. ⁶

Man's review lists the Australian Inster range at $39,000 before on-road costs for the Standard Range, $42,500 for the Extended Range and $45,000 for the flagship Cross, and notes the base car is around $11,000 dearer than the top-spec BYD Atto 1 Premium with comparable claimed range — a value tension that is the reviewer's own assessment, not a Hyundai claim. The 2026 Inster achieved a four-star Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) safety rating under 2025 testing criteria, the review records. ⁶
